The Costa Cálida: discover the most beautiful beaches in Murcia

Table of contents

Spain is a popular travel destination for many different reasons. Think of the delectable Spanish cuisine, the interesting culture, the diverse landscapes, but of course also the many amazing beaches. As a beach lover, Spain is the place to be. Have you heard of the Costa Cálida in Spain? This is a beautiful coastline where you will find incredibly beautiful beaches. The water there is azure blue, lovely in temperature and in many places crystal clear. On the beautiful beaches of Murcia you will not easily get bored. So in this article we share the 4 (in our opinion) most beautiful beaches of Murcia on the Costa Cálida in Spain!

The Costa Cálida in Spain

The Costa Cálida, located in southeastern Spain, is an undiscovered gem on the Mediterranean Sea. While many tourists in the summer months mainly vacation on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, the Costa Cálida is often overlooked. This beautiful coast extends for more than 250 kilometers and offers not only beautiful golden sandy beaches, but also a unique landscape of rugged and rocky bays and crystal clear waters.

What makes the Costa Cálida in Spain so special is the combination of its serene tranquility and picturesque fishing villages such as Águillas and Mazarrón. What we especially accept as very pleasant is that on the beaches here you are mainly among the locals. This makes discovering the most beautiful beaches in Murcia extra fun!

1. Playa de Calblanque

Our favorite beach in all of Murcia is without a doubt Playa de Calblanque. No matter how beautiful the other beaches are, no beach can compete with this one. Why?

Playa de Calblanque is tucked away in the Parque Regional de Calblanque. A piece of untouched nature with unique biodiversity, golden sand beaches, extensive dunes and a rugged and serene coastline. This environment exudes pure tranquility and beauty. The water of the sea is crystal clear and ranges from turquoise to deep blue in color. You can take beautiful walks through the unspoiled nature, but above all, take a refreshing dip in the sea.

Because Playa de Calblanque is part of a protected nature reserve, there is little tourism and hardly any buildings. There are no facilities, so bring plenty of water and snacks if you want to spend part of the day here. By the way, you won't have cell phone coverage here either, which is perfect for completely immersing yourself in the sounds of the sea.

Of course, this beach in Murcia is also becoming increasingly popular. Therefore, during the summer months there are restrictions and the beach and nature reserve are not always accessible.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to find a website that shares current opening hours. Restrictions during summer months are active at least from June through August. Your best bet then is to drive to the beach in the morning to see if it is accessible.

2. Playa De la Torre Derribada

Another fine unspoiled spot on the coast of Murcia is: Playa De la Torre Derribada. You will find the beach on the edge of the Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Natural Park, which is one of the highlights of Murcia. It is a wide sandy beach surrounded by dunes. Nothing suggests that behind these dunes you will find a marshy area and pink salt lakes.

There is a relaxed atmosphere on this beach which makes it very pleasant to be here. We noticed that many locals go to this beach at the end of the day to cool off and have dinner together. There are no facilities on the beach, but if you are looking for a restaurant for a snack you can walk to the port (on the far right side of the beach).

The combination of beach and nature makes Playa De la Torre Derribada a unique place. A paradise enjoyed by water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Had enough of the beach? Then you can always take a walk through the natural park. Flamingos are guaranteed to be spotted here!

3. Playa de Bolnuevo

We cannot describe this vast beach on the outskirts of the small village of Bolnuevo in any other way than idyllic. The casual and relaxed atmosphere and calm crystal clear seawater makes this beach belong in this list of the most beautiful beaches in Murcia. It is a place away from the tourist destinations, although the unique rock formations of 'Las Gredas de Bolnuevo' do attract some attention. Opposite these rock formations, at the beginning of the beach, you will find the hotspot Restaurante La Siesta de Oliver. This is a wonderful place to have lunch or end your beach day at the end with a snack and drink.

And while you're here, you might as well take a look at the fishing village of Puerto de Mazzarón. You can wander around the harbor, relax on the beach and eat a delicious ice cream at Heladeria Temperato Felice Gelato.

4. Mar Menor

One of the most unique beach locations in Murcia, and in fact in all of Europe, is the Mar Menor. This largest saltwater lagoon is surrounded by calm, shallow waters. Around the Mar Menor you will find several villages and beaches. They are wonderful places to spend time by the lagoon. Especially since the water in the lagoon is often a few degrees warmer than the Mediterranean.

Take Santiago de la Ribera beach, for example. It is clean and maintained, the sea is calm and you have fantastic views of La Manga. The narrow strip long that separates the Mar Menor from the open sea. You can also catch the ferry from this village to the other side.

The Mar Menor is a beautiful place surrounded by natural parks, mud baths and salt lakes. This makes it one of the most versatile beach destinations in Murcia!
