1. Join a Free Walking Tour\u00a0<\/h3>

A fun and informative way to explore a lot of interesting places in downtown Medell\u00edn is to join a free walking tour. We walked with the tour of Real City Tours<\/a><\/strong>, this is highly recommended. You will walk with a local guide for 3.5 hours who will tell you a lot about the sights, but also go deeper into the city's turbulent past.\u00a0<\/p>

The guide we had during this free walking tour of Medell\u00edn also shared her personal story with us. What it was like to grow up in an environment where violence was the rule rather than the exception. A gripping story, but also very special to see and experience how positive and future-oriented the Colombian people now are in life.\u00a0<\/p>

As a tip, we want to pass along to you not to drop the name Pablo Escobar too much. People do not like to talk about the period when Pablo Escobar dominated city and country. It evokes unpleasant and painful memories, the reason why they prefer to set their sights on the future and prefer to talk about what they have achieved in the meantime. 2. Take a ride on the cable car<\/h3>

Although the city of Medell\u00edn has undergone a huge transformation, you will still find slums on the outskirts of the city. These neighborhoods were formed on the edges of the valley in the years when Medell\u00edn was still in the hands of the drug cartels. Back then, locals had to pay the cartels money to leave the neighborhood. Since the government installed cable cars, locals can safely travel from the slums to the city center.\u00a0<\/p>

There are 6 cable cars in Medell\u00edn and it sure is fun to take a ride in one of them. The most popular route is from Acevedo to Santo Domingo. From the cable car you have a particularly beautiful view of the city. It is a special experience where the contrast between rich and poor in Medell\u00edn comes close. You can get off at Santo Domingo and walk around near the station, but it is recommended not to go further into the neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>

If you travel to the cable car by subway, you can use the same ticket (as long as you don't leave the station). From Santo Domingo station you can take the cable car further with line L to Parque Arvi. 3. Visit the neighborhood of Comuna 13<\/h3>

One of the most interesting neighborhoods to visit in Medell\u00edn is Comuna 13. For years, this neighborhood was run by violent gangs and guerrillas. Not surprisingly, Comuna 13 was considered the most dangerous neighborhood in the world.\u00a0But why specifically the Comuna 13 district? It is because this district was ideally located on a hill, on the outskirts of the city and along the highway with a connection to the West Coast. The perfect location for drug gangs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Locals could not walk the streets freely. They were too afraid of flying blanks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Battles and attacks were most intense from 1997 to 2002. In 2002, the then president invaded Comuna 13, this attack lasted no less than 4 days and is considered the first step of transformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nowadays, Comuna 13 is a place for creatives and you can see it everywhere. Wherever you walk you will see colorful street art brightening up the neighborhood, happy children playing together in the streets and huge numbers of street artists who are happy to show you their dance skills. 4. Go paragliding over Medell\u00edn<\/span><\/h3>

Are you an adrenaline junkie and up for some action? Then you should go paragliding in Medell\u00edn. From the air you have amazing views over the city. And so you also see what a special location the city has. Medell\u00edn lies in a valley and is surrounded by mountains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

You can at Zona de Vuelo<\/a><\/strong>, a well-regarded organization, book a flight of 15, 20 or 30 minutes. For us, 15 minutes was more than enough. We paid\u00a0<\/span>for this<\/span>\u00a0140,000 COP (in 2019), which converts to about \u20ac30 per person. This price included the use of a GoPro with which to record your paragliding adventure.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
