The Paracas National Reserve is one of the most beautiful places we visited in Peru<\/a>. And although there is no denying that Peru has an awful lot of beautiful areas, this national park absolutely impressed us. As true beach and nature lovers, Paracas National Reserve never ceases to amaze us. Unspoiled beaches, miles of cliffs, golden sand dunes and incredible biodiversity. The impressive Paracas National Reserve \u00a0<\/h2>

Near the atmospheric fishing village Paracas<\/a><\/strong> lies the Paracas National Reserve. The peninsula, on Peru's southern coast, is a protected area because of the many marine animals and birds found there. Stretching over an area of more than 200,000 hectares, you can encounter pink flamingos, pelicans and sea lions, but it is also a place where you can see the pristine ocean versus the dry desert.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Visiting the Paracas National Reserve<\/h3>

It is not recommended to visit the reserve independently because it is very vast and desert-like. As a result, many roads are unpaved and sandstorms can regularly occur out of nowhere. By visiting the highlights of the Paracas National Reserve with a tour company, you can enjoy the insanely beautiful landscape in a relaxed and comfortable way.\u00a0<\/p>

We have at PeruHop<\/a><\/strong> purchased a bus ticket to travel from Lima to Arequipa. One advantage of this is that some activities are already included, including a visit to the Paracas National Reserve. Of course, there are also several travel agencies in Paracas where you can book this activity. The cost is between 30 and 50 Peruvian sol per person (about \u20ac7.00 - \u20ac12.00).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Highlights of the Paracas National Reserve in Peru<\/h2>\n

Scattered throughout the reserve you will find several sites where you will stop during a tour. You will then have time to walk around on your own, take photos and perhaps have a guide share information about the particular location. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

1. Le Cathedral<\/h3>

This unique rock formation, see photo above left, houses a unique water cave formed millions of years ago. Unfortunately, this rock formation collapsed during the 2007 earthquake. Nonetheless, this is a viewpoint to feast your eyes on. When the waves break loose on the cliffs, the water splashes up with a thunderous sound. And with a little luck, you'll spot a condor here like we did!\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

2. Playa Roja<\/h3>

We were told that most beaches in Peru have white sand, but Playa Roja in the Paracas National Reserve is an exception. This beach is characterized by the desert sand that turns into sandy rocks and then into a deep red sandy beach that ends in a beautiful blue sea. We stopped at Mirador Istmo II for a panoramic view of sea, beach and desert. From here, walk through Punta Santa Marina to see the waves breaking against the cliffs. Down below, we stopped at Mirador Playa Roja to see the deep red sand beach up close.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Admire the Ballestas Islands up close<\/h2>

The Paracas National Reserve also includes the Ballestas Islands<\/a><\/strong>. Rocky islands where sea lions and various species of birds live permanently. You can visit the Ballestas Islands by booking a two-hour boat trip. The boat leaves from the port of Paracas and also sails past an ancient signal site.
