Until the 16th century, Cusco was the Inca capital of Peru until the city was taken over by the Spanish. Many Inca temples were demolished to make way for churches, but fortunately some structures have been preserved in and around the city.&nbsp;<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Walking through the streets, you quickly notice the Incas' unique way of building. For example, large boulders were used that were stacked on top of each other without cement. Also, at that time there was already a&nbsp;<\/span>impressive<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">&nbsp;water supply and&nbsp;<\/span>drainage system<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">&nbsp;<\/span>created<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">&nbsp;by the Incas. You won't get bored and while walking you will taste, feel and smell the history and colorful culture. We would also recommend exploring Cusco with a guide. Because of Cusco's rich history, there are so many interesting facts to tell about the city and the Inca era. We experienced during our walking tour with our enthusiastic guide Ernesto from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peruwellserved.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peru Well Served<\/a><\/strong> learned and discovered so much about Cusco, which we certainly could not have done on our own.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">But if we do have to recommend some sights and to do's, these are definitely them:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3f6bdd3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-eae-slider=\"53992\" data-id=\"3f6bdd3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-35d5eaf\" data-eae-slider=\"33824\" data-id=\"35d5eaf\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94846d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"94846d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>1. Visit Plaza de Armas<\/h3><p class=\"css-ju6on1\">Plaza de Armas is the central square in Cusco and the beating heart of the city. Among other things, you will find here the Cathedral of Cusco, an impressive cathedral in Gothic-Renaissance style built on the site of an Inca palace. The cathedral was built between 1560 and 1654 by order of the Spanish. Inside the cathedral you will see more than 400 paintings, carvings and a silver altar.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"css-ju6on1\">What is incredibly special about this cathedral is that here too you can see the influences of the Incas. Our guide told us that much of the art was created by the Incas and that they were inspired by their own beliefs and experiences.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">For example, the angels in the paintings look suspiciously like condor's (the largest bird of prey you can spot in Peru).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The painting showing \"The Last Supper\" also has a very special twist.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The large painting, created by Marcos Zapata in 1753, depicts Jesus and the twelve apostles gathered around a table preparing for dinner. And this final last supper is not the usual bread and wine, but guinea pig!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The cooked guinea pig cannot be missed on a plate in the center of the table. Guinea pigs originated in Peru and can still be found on many restaurant menus in the country today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section Indeed, Coricancha, also called Korikancha, Qoricancha and Qorikancha, was the most important and sacred temple in the Inca Empire. The temple was also called the golden temple of the sun and was studded with golden leaves. When the Spanish took over Cusco, Coricancha, like most Inca buildings, was looted and partially destroyed. On top of the ruins of Coricancha, the Santo Domingo church and monastery was built. Because the complex became a clash of two civilizations, it is today a mix between Spanish and Inca building styles. So we decided to eat the picnic at the restaurant where it was supposed to come from: Cicciolina! This is definitely a hot spot to save for when you are in Cusco. There is a restaurant, a cafe and so you can also arrange picnics from Cicciolina. Cusco is 3500 meters above sea level. We too did not know in advance exactly what to expect from the altitude. We had heard many stories about altitude sickness and therefore decided to build up the altitude slowly and not to fly directly from Lima to Cusco. All in all, we found the altitude and side effects not too bad, but are really glad we took the route from Lima to Cusco via the coast by bus. With stair climbing in Cusco, we felt very quickly that there was little oxygen in the air and we were out of breath very quickly.
