For over 700 years Ollantaytambo has been inhabited and everywhere you walk you can still see the original foundations on which the current city was built. The city dates back to the 15th century and was built under the reign of Emperor Pachacuti. In Ollantaytambo you will find some of the best preserved Inca ruins in all of Peru. Stroll through the historic streets of Ollantaytambo<\/h2><p>The main square, Plaza de Armas, in the center of the town is a great place to start exploring Ollantaytambo. The narrow side streets with the cobblestone paths and high stone walls are not only photogenic, but also lead you to the most beautiful places in town. Everywhere you walk you can hear the sound of running water. This comes from the river that flows through the city, thanks to the original Inca irrigation system. It is truly amazing to think how the Incas created this years ago. Visit the Ollantaytambo terraces and ruins<\/h2><p>From wherever you look, everywhere from the town of Ollantaytambo you can see ruins on the hills. And you can visit these ruins, of course. The Ollantaytambo ruins are certainly not yet as popular as the ruins of Machu Picchu, but even here it can get very crowded. It is therefore advisable to visit the ruins early in the morning or just a little later in the day. This ticket gives you access to several ruins in the Sacred Valley, including Pisac and Moray. There are three different types of tickets. The general ticket costs 130 sol, which is about \u20ac33 per person, and is valid for 10 days to visit the different ruins. You can purchase the ticket almost at each ruin or at the COSITUC office in Cusco. Pinkuylluna, high up on the mountains, are old warehouses that you can hike to and from where you have a breathtaking view of Ollantaytambo and the mountains beyond. Especially during golden hour, just before sunset, this is the place to be. To get here, it's best to navigate via Google Maps to Pinkuylluna. Machu Picchu<\/h2><p>In Ollantaytambo you will find the train station from where Peru Rail and Incal Rail trains leave for the village of Aguas Calientes. From here you only need to take the bus to get to the entrance of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/travander.nl\/en\/machu-picchu-peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machu Picchu<\/a><\/strong> to get there. For the more active among us, you can also hike up from Aguas Calientes. This will take about 1 to 2 hours depending on your condition and whether you are bothered by the height differences.
