It is said that this island is the place where St. Nicholas was originally buried. This remains guesswork of course, but what we do know for sure is that on this island you can still find many impressive remains from the ancient Lycian era. The rocky area is home to many impressive ruins of Byzantine churches and other historical treasures over 1,500 years old. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow sea channel. Gemiler Island is only 400 meters wide and 1,000 meters long, but is home to many historical monuments. St. Nicholas Island's rich history is due to the Byzantine settlement that was once here. Gemiler Island was also an important place of pilgrimage for Christians. They came here to honor the tomb of St. Nicholas. Exactly where the St. Nicholas we know came from is an unclear story, but it is believed that he was born in Patara and was buried on Gemiler Island - only to be moved to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/travander.nl\/en\/myra-turkey\/\">Myra<\/a><\/strong>, where an imposing tomb can be admired. St. Nicholas is therefore known as the Bishop of Myra. The island is uninhabited and is a chaotic jumble of historical remains. Along the way, you will encounter several churches and tombs, including, therefore, the tomb of St. Nicholas. A total of four churches can be found on the island. It is claimed that there was also a fifth church, but this has not been confirmed. Some parts of the 500-meter-long tunnel have collapsed, but the remains of the passage tell a special story.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"css-ju6on1\">The processional corridor contained 14 stops. These stops represent\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">the stations of the Stations of the Cross where priests paused to pray as they walked back and forth between buildings. In addition to parts of the structure, many decorations also remain. For example, decorations in the mortar and stonework are still visible. There are a few hiking trails on the island, but they are covered with loose stones. Therefore, it is definitely useful to wear hiking boots! The hike is worthwhile not only because of the ruins, but also because of the beautiful nature.
