In the middle of the vast desert you will not expect to encounter a city, but Oman is incredibly diverse and full of surprises. The city of Ibri may be surrounded by nothing but desert, but you will still find a truly vibrant city with beautiful buildings. The main attraction in Ibri is the Ibri Fort. The fort is over 400 years old and has been open to the public since 1995. The architectural style is typical of the Middle East and a picture to behold. The Ibri Fort consists of a jumble of buildings and towers, but the most interesting thing is that inside the fort you will find one of the oldest and largest mosques in Oman. And this one is still in use today! From the castle battlements you have a beautiful view of the city, mountains and desert. Next to the fortress you will find an old souk. Since 1988, they have been listed together on UNESCO's World Heritage List for their remarkable Bronze Age tombs and remains. Dating from 2,000-3,000 BC, this archaeological site is the most complete collection of settlement and necropolises in the world. The ruins resemble beehives and are therefore also called the beehive tombs of Al Ayn and Bat. Scattered around the site, you can find as many as more than 400 ruins, but almost all of them are partially or completely collapsed.
