And if tourists flock to this region at all, they mainly visit the most famous places such as the port city Cartagena<\/a><\/strong>, the Mar Menor (the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe) and the capital of the same name, Murcia. They have no idea there is such a beautiful green and lush place close to them. Sierra Espu\u00f1a natural park<\/h2>

Sierra Espu\u00f1a is the largest forest area in the region of Murcia and one of the greenest and most lush areas in southeastern Spain. But not only that makes Sierra Espu\u00f1a a unique piece of nature to visit. In fact, did you know that this natural area was created by human efforts to restore nature?<\/p>

The park is relatively young as it did not come into existence until the late 19th century when a massive reforestation project was undertaken in 1889. But how did it come to this? Because the area faced the consequences of centuries of deforestation, something had to be done. The area was becoming depleted. The disappearance of forests and trees endangered biodiversity, but mainly the region's water resources. Torrents of water and mud from the mountains reached the city of Murcia several times.\u00a0<\/p>

Beginning in 1889, large-scale replanting programs were undertaken in which thousands of trees were planted to combat erosion, regulate water flows and restore ecosystems. A project that appears to have been very successful! The Sierra Espu\u00f1a Natural Park has been able to recover and is now one of the most beautiful places to visit in Murcia.\u00a0<\/p>

In 1931, the natural park was officially protected and declared a national reforestation zone. And since 1978 it has officially been a nature park. Therefore, you can now enjoy a diverse flora and fauna there, spot wild animals like boar and all kinds of birds, take beautiful walks and above all enjoy the beautiful nature.<\/p>

In the summer months, many locals flock to this beautiful area to escape the summer heat. Because it is higher up and because of the many forests, it is on average 5 degrees cooler here than in downtown Murcia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Highlights in the Sierra Espu\u00f1a Natural Park<\/h2>

The Sierra Espu\u00f1a Natural Park is almost 18,000 hectares in size, so you can imagine there is an awful lot to see and do. Here are our highlights!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

1. Barrancos de Gebas<\/h3>

Not far from the city of Murcia you will find these so-called 'badlands', an insanely beautiful and rugged piece of nature and also a protected nature reserve since 1995. The name 'badlands' was given to the area by the locals because there was no way to live here, let alone grow anything.\u00a0<\/p>

The clear blue reservoir is surrounded by gorges and canyons created by erosion. You can take several hikes along the canyons, and you have beautiful views of the canyon. But our favorite spot is still the reservoir. Here you really notice how big and impressive Barrancos de Gebas is, and how bizarrely clear the color blue of the water is!<\/p>

The best vantage point is Mirador del embalse de Algeciras<\/a><\/strong>, this location can be found on Google Maps. It's a narrow, winding road to get there but it's well worth the bumpy ride.<\/p>

Barrancos de Gebas does not officially belong to the Sierra Espu\u00f1a Natural Park, but it is so close to it that you can ideally combine it.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2. The mountain village of Aledo<\/h3>

You will find a number of large and small villages to visit on the outskirts and in the natural park. We decided to skip the larger villages, such as Alhama de Murcia and Totana, and instead visit a smaller village. This became the mountain village of Aledo, which has an incredibly special location, namely on a fortified settlement at an altitude of 800 meters.<\/p>

Are you here during the week? Then there is not much life in the village, but nevertheless, it is definitely fun to stroll around and take a look at the impressive Torre del Homenaje. This tower was built by the Order of Santiago, along with its defensive walls. Aledo has a rich history thanks to its role in the war between the Moorish and Christian knights. And this is the place where you experience that.<\/p>

Then another fun fact about the rocks on which the mountain village is built. In fact, these tell the story of the origin of the mountains of this region. There is some 20 million years of geological history in the rock. Extraordinary huh!\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

3. Estrecho de la Arboleja<\/h3>

Another very beautiful and fairly unknown geological site in Sierra Espu\u00f1a is Estrecho de la Arboleja. It is a gorge with rock walls about 10 meters high. The Arboleja Gorge was created by water erosion that took place millions of years ago. You can walk through the gorge and take in the unusual shapes of the rocks. It is incredibly cool, which is because the gorge is shielded at the top by trees and bushes. By the way, don't be surprised if you encounter water in the gorge. This is because all the water from the surrounding area finds its way into the gorge. Actually, the water determines how far you can walk. On dry days this is further than on wet days. In short, a very special place to visit in Sierra Espu\u00f1a!<\/p>

You'll find the gorge about a 10-minute drive from the mountain village of Aledo.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

4. Santuario de Santa Eulalia<\/h3>

Santuario de Santa Eulalia, also called the Sanctuary of Santa Eulalia, is beautifully located in the Sierra Espu\u00f1a Natural Park. But where shrines are normally built close to a city, this one is located about 7 kilometers from the town of Totana. You can visit La Santa, as it is called among locals, by taking a nice walk to it. An alternative is to drive there by car, for example, if you want to visit several beautiful places in the natural park.\u00a0<\/p>

The shrine dates back to 1574 and was built with donations from believers. The story goes that sick people would be healed by drinking water from the spring. Over the years, the building fell into disrepair but new paintings in 1624 and expansion of the building in the 18th century left it today as it was then. You therefore take a step back in time.<\/p>

You can visit the Santuario de Santa Eulalia and possibly have something to eat or drink on the terrace. And while you're here, be sure to take a look at the sacred hall. Here you can admire the Mudejar-style ceiling. La Santa is a very important place for the locals. Every year, in early December and on Jan. 7, everyone gathers to honor their patron saint (Santa Eulalia) during the annual pilgrimages.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

5. Restaurante Fuente del Hilo<\/h3>

Right in the heart of the natural park you will find Restaurante Fuente del Hilo<\/a><\/strong>, a restaurant known for its authentic Spanish cuisine. All in a location where you are surrounded by nothing but lush nature and ultimate tranquility. The menu features traditional Murcian dishes prepared with local and seasonal produce. But the dish they really excel at is the paella with rabbit. For those who do not like this, there is also paella with seafood or a vegetarian version. It is a wonderful place to settle down after a walk, bike ride or tour for a nice snack and drink.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

6. Sanatorio Abandonado de Tuberculosos em Murcia<\/h3>

A somewhat fascinating and mysterious place in Sierra Espu\u00f1a is this abandoned sanatorium. Built in 1910, the hospital was originally intended for people with tuberculosis to be treated here. After all, where better to do that than in an environment with fresh mountain air? At its peak, as many as hundreds of patients were treated here, but this came to an abrupt end when better treatments became available for tuberculosis in mainstream hospitals in the 1960s.<\/p>

If you take a walk through the natural park here in the area, you must make a stop here. What makes this building so special is the ghostly atmosphere it exudes. You cannot enter the hospital, all around it is closed with fences. But you can see the decay from afar.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A nice tip for Sierra Espu\u00f1a<\/h3>

A unique place in Sierra Espu\u00f1a that we were not able to visit but definitely recommend to you are the so-called \"snow pits. These structures date from the 16th to 20th centuries and were used to store snow. By storing snow, ice could be delivered to the inhabitants of Alhama and the other surrounding villages during the summer months. They were even used to store food such as meat.\u00a0<\/p>

As you understand, the snow pits are not used today, but it gives you a unique glimpse into the life of the past. There are no less than 25 of them that you can find on the tops of the mountains in the nature park. You can admire them at an altitude of 1,400 meters, but for this you have to make a big hike!
