However, if you\u2019re simply passing through the area without stopping, for example when traveling to the new city, you\u2019re usually allowed to drive through without any issues.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What stands out in the old city is that many stupas have preserved their original colors. Unlike in many other parts of Sri Lanka, they are not painted white. We chose to focus on the new city. There is plenty to see and experience there, and it was a logical choice, since we were only in Anuradhapura for part of the day. Even without a ticket, you can immerse yourself in local life here and visit impressive temples that are still in full use.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"1335\">Anuradhapura is often recommended to explore by bicycle, but honestly, we wouldn\u2019t advise it. The distances are vast, and the heat, especially around midday, is intense. For us, traveling by tuktuk was the best choice: comfortable, quick, and with a refreshing breeze that made the heat more bearable. Want a deeper experience during your visit? Vessagiriya<\/h3><p>Those looking for a quieter and cooler place should definitely visit Vessagiriya. These ruins are hidden among large boulders. It almost feels like discovering a hidden temple complex. You'll find remnants of monasteries dating back to the 3rd century B.C., and some of the rock walls still have ancient inscriptions. We were almost alone here, which makes the experience extra special. Be sure to put on sturdy shoes, as you will sometimes climb a bit between the rocks. Also enjoy the beautiful views of Anuradhapura. You will undoubtedly catch a glimpse of the impressive Ruwanweli Maha Seya.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section Mihindu Aranya Senasanaya<\/h3><p>This place is slightly outside the center making it a bit of a search, but what makes it so nice to visit this highlight is that you are likely to be one of the few tourists. The Mihindu Aranya Senasanaya is one of the most serene places we visited in Anuradhapura was Mihindu Aranya Senasanaya a Buddhist monastery in the middle of greenery. What makes this location extra special is the ancient tree with its impressive above-ground root system. It is a popular place among monks to meditate, and you can feel it in everything. The benches around the tree invite you to sit down and unwind.
