What are the Aldeias Hist\u00f3ricas of Portugal?<\/h2>

The Aldeias Hist\u00f3ricas de Portugal (literally: the Historical Villages of Portugal) are a network of twelve ancient villages and towns nestled in the mountainous interior of the country. This network is a carefully protected cultural heritage site. Strategically built on high mountain peaks and granite cliffs, these settlements served for centuries as the Portuguese kingdom's first line of defense against invaders, most notably the Spaniards and the Moors.<\/p>

What makes them so extraordinary today is how well they have preserved their authentic character. Walking through them means exploring narrow cobblestone streets lined with granite houses, ancient town walls, and imposing castles (castelos) that still tower over the villages. Where are these historic villages located in central Portugal?<\/h2>

The Aldeias Hist\u00f3ricas are scattered across the rugged, mountainous interior of Central Portugal, roughly stretching across the region between the city of Coimbra and the Spanish border. This area is famous for its unspoiled nature, deep valleys, and impressive mountain ranges, including the well-known Serra da Estrela (the highest peaks on mainland Portugal) and the Serra da Gardunha.<\/p>

Because these villages originally formed a defensive line, they are strategically aligned along the border region known as the Raia. Built on steep hills and granite outcrops, they allowed inhabitants to spot approaching enemies from miles away.<\/p>
