Yes, Colombia is generally a safe travel destination and is becoming increasingly popular among travelers. The security situation has improved greatly in recent years, especially in popular regions such as Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Salento and the coffee region.
Still, it is wise to prepare well. Check out the current travel advice at national government for the most up-to-date information by region.
In addition, always use common sense:
- Avoid remote areas, especially after sunset;
- Don't walk the streets alone at night;
- Leave expensive jewelry or eye-catching accessories at home;
- Always keep a close eye on your belongings, especially on public transportation and in crowded places.
- Preferably use official cabs and apps such as Uber.
As a Dutch traveler, you do not need a visa for a short stay in Colombia. Upon arrival in the South American country, you will receive a tourist stamp in your passport that allows you to stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days.
Keep in mind that your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months on the day of departure from Colombia. This is a general rule used in many countries. Any visa requirements can always change, so please check before you leave current travel advice for Colombia.
The best time to travel to Colombia is during the dry season. This is from December through February and in the months of July and August. In the other months, the rainy season prevails and thus there can be a lot of rain. For example, October and November are considered the wettest months. However, we traveled in the month of October and had beautiful days, but also some tropical rains. In many restaurants, cafes, stores and hotels you can use a Dutch debit and/or credit card. Just be sure to set your debit card to world for use, often they are automatically set to use only in Europe. By the way, it is advisable to always carry cash with you. It is always possible that your debit card will not be accepted. You can withdraw cash at ATMs in larger and tourist towns.
