The fortified town of Brielle on the island Voorne-Putten is an incredibly fun city for a city break in South Holland. Brielle, also known as Den Briel, breathes history. Everywhere you go or stand in Brielle, you are left to marvel. The city has many historic buildings, magnificent sights and cozy terraces and stores. In this article we share the very best tips for what to do in Brielle during a day out.

The most beautiful sights in Brielle

There are many fun sights and activities to do in Brielle. For example, did you know that Brielle alone has 400 monuments? A fun fact, because because of this Brielle has the most monuments per inhabitant in the Netherlands except for one city (Harlingen).

1. Asyl Square: Asyl for old and infirm sailors in brielle

The Asyl Square is one of the most special places in Brielle. The Asyl for Old and Destitute Seamen was founded in 1872 with the purpose of housing old and poor seamen. In 1947 it also became possible for non-seafarers to enroll. Today, the square is still surrounded by monuments. In the middle of the beautiful rose park stands the statue the Nymph. At the entrance to the square stands the Johan Been bench with a plaque of Johan Been that was designed by the well-known Briel artist M.L. Middelhoek.

2. Pilgrimage church of Saint Martyrs of Gorcum

Another special place in Brielle is the Martyrs of Gorcum Pilgrimage Church. The pilgrimage church is dedicated to the Martyrs of Gorcum. A sad, but at the same time beautiful dedication.

The building was dedicated on April 29, 1932. The church is part of a pilgrimage complex. Behind the church is the walled martyr's field. What immediately stands out here is the pond. This used to be the fishing pond of the monastery. It was assumed that in this water the bones of the saints were once cleansed, attributing healing powers to the water. Around the martyrdom field is a covered circumambulation, where processions could be held and where the Stations of the Cross, dating from about 1870, are located.

We found it an incredibly impressive church to see. So visiting the church is definitely something you should do while in Brielle. The pilgrimage church is open to the public daily during the summer months of July and August.

3. The Kruithuis

The Kruithuisje is a landmark in Brielle with a story. The Kruithuis stands on Bastion II of the ramparts. The former warehouse dates back to 1633 and is a reminder of Brielle's garrison past. The Kruithuis stands on the Kruithuisbolwerk (one of Brielle's nine bastions) and is surrounded by a small moat. The centuries-old house used to contain the gunpowder for the cannons and guns. Today, the Kruithuis houses a permanent exhibition on the history of April 1 celebrations in Brielle. Not only is the Kruithuis a place with a lot of history, it is also an incredibly beautiful place to photograph!

4. Gatekeeper House

Brielle's historic harbor is home to several historic buildings, including the Gatekeeper's House from the mid-eighteenth century. The cottage belonged to the seventeenth century Water Gate, but it was demolished in 1894. The beautiful guardhouse remained and is today a residential house. You would live there, what a beautiful place!

5. Mill 't Vliegend hert

Near the aforementioned Kruithuisje you will find the mill 't Vliegend Hert. And while you're in the neighborhood, this is a must-see. The mill 't Vliegend Hert on Molenstraat is a standerd mill, built in 1985. The mill is certainly one of Brielle's many beautiful sights.

The best activities in Brielle

Brielle not only has many historical sights, there are also plenty of fun activities to do in Brielle. What we especially enjoyed doing was sailing about the Brielse Meer. We visited Brielle on a fine summer day and with the wind through our hair and the sun rays on our faces we felt like we were on vacation. And that just in Brielle!

1. Boating on the Brielse Meer

The Brielse Meer is an incredibly fine recreational area on the island of Voorne-Putten. It is a true water sports paradise! We took a boat out on the lake and it was wonderful. While sailing, you see on both sides of the banks sunbathing areas, marinas, beaches, campsites and various restaurants and cafes. You can also sail right into the center of Brielle with its cozy terraces.

Besides renting a boat, you can also dive, surf, fish, sail and, of course, swim on the Brielse Meer! Around the lake are several hiking, biking and horseback riding trails.

2. Explore the fortified town of Brielle by horse-drawn streetcar

What really comes highly recommended to do in Brielle during the summer months is a ride on the horse-drawn streetcar. From Wednesday through Saturday (and on shopping Sundays), the authentic horse streetcar runs fixed routes through and around downtown for a small fee of €3 for adults and €2 per child.

The horse streetcar starts at 12:00 noon at the Martyrs of Gorcum Pilgrimage Church and runs until 16:00. So you can easily combine a ride on the Horse Tram with a visit to the place of pilgrimage. If you prefer to get on after a drink at the Brielsche Aap or the Hoofdwacht, this is also possible! The clock at the stops shows what time the next ride is.
