The charm of Den Bosch in autumn

If there’s one time of year when Den Bosch truly shines, it’s in the autumn. The fall and early winter months are cozy, and you can feel it in the warm atmosphere that immediately embraces you. As the leaves change color and the first festive lights start to appear, Den Bosch feels like the perfect destination to experience the good life. Wander through the narrow streets, where boutiques and artisanal shops are sure to catch your eye. Step inside one of the charming cafés for a steaming cup of coffee and a freshly made Bossche Bol, and soak in the view of the historic buildings around you.

Hotspot tips for Den Bosch

In Den Bosch, it’s all about culinary treats and you can literally taste it in the local cuisine. From the iconic Bossche Bol to the savory worstenbroodje, and even inventive dishes with a modern twist, tradition effortlessly meets innovation here. These are our personal tips and favorite foodie spots in Den Bosch:

1. Pollevie

Our absolute favorite is Pollevie. This hotspot focuses on creative dishes with an emphasis on vegetables. Here, you’ll taste surprising combinations and seasonal flavors in a modern, atmospheric setting. Dining at Pollevie is a culinary experience you’ll want to savor slowly. We recommend opting for the 5-course parade menu, where you can choose between plant-based or fish and meat options. To complete the experience, pair your dishes with the expertly matched wine selections, or go alcohol-free if you prefer. You’ll be amazed at the flavor combinations, like lobster with sushi rice served alongside a matcha latte with oat milk. It might not be an obvious pairing, but it works brilliantly. Every moment of the evening at Pollevie is filled with (delicious) surprises!

2. The Garage

At this cheeky “non-Italian Italian,” you can enjoy deliciously loaded sandwiches. De Garage is a cool hotspot located next to the design store Mister Design. You can walk straight in from the shop, but of course, there’s also a regular entrance. De Garage is a trendy lunch spot, named after the former Ford garage from the 1930s.

3. La Jeu

In autumn, the weather can be chilly and damp. How nice is it then to take a break from shopping or wandering through the city with a cozy coffee stop? Pretty great, if you ask us. One of our favorite spots is the coffee bar La Jeu. A snug and stylishly designed café, where the coffee beans, sourced from Brazil, Colombia, and Sumatra, are lovingly picked, dried, and roasted. At La Jeu, they’re transformed into the perfect cup of coffee.

4. Eatery De Stadt

A great spot for lunch in Den Bosch is Eetbar De Stadt. This contemporary eatery offers delicious shared dining dishes. The menu is varied, with a slight focus on Asian flavors. We tried the Korean Pork Pinsa, Thai Fried Chicken, Bao Bun Black, and Bao Bun Pink, and we can share, everything tasted amazing. Just like their homemade iced tea!

5. Eating at Fret

Dining at ‘Eten bij Fret’ is an incredible experience. Not just because the food tastes amazing, but also because it truly feels like you’re sitting among the locals. The restaurant is cozy and atmospheric, and, according to what we’ve heard, it’s always packed. The dishes served here are pure, seasonal, and completely plant-based. And that’s impressive, because sometimes you genuinely feel like you’re eating fish or meat. Our favorite dish was the eggplant, we’re already drooling just thinking about it!

Tip: Grab a seat at the bar: it’s a fantastic experience. You get a view of the kitchen where everything is prepared fresh, can chat with the staff, and watch everyone else enjoying their meal.

Sustainable shopping in Den Bosch

Den Bosch is a true shopping city, with plenty of charming boutiques to explore. But did you know that many of its shops also have fascinating stories behind them?

Take, for example, a few shops on Vughterstraat, the go-to street for sustainable and local initiatives. Here, you can score the most beautiful second-hand outfits at Appel&Ei or the Reshare Store, while PIMPT offers original vintage furniture. For designer clothing at friendly prices, head to the Gooische Fashion Outlet, and book lovers will find unique reads at Terre des Hommes, where proceeds go to charity.

But there’s more! Snellestraat is a charming street full of unique shops. At Wanderwood, you’ll find sustainable home accessories and gifts, while Het Archief offers exclusive second-hand designer clothing.

Also, a visit to Cor Unum is a must, this is a ceramics studio where craftsmanship and design come together. For interior and art enthusiasts, Mister Design is an absolute must-see.

Stay at Hotel Ryder in Vught

Just outside the city center of Den Bosch, you’ll find the stylish Hotel Ryder. Set on a renovated 17th-century barracks site and housed in a historic building, the hotel perfectly blends modern luxury with a serene, nature-filled environment. The hotel offers 30 rooms across 5 different types. We stayed in the Top Ryder room, which is a split-level layout: the bathroom and sitting area are downstairs, and the bedroom is upstairs. The cozy, homely interior makes it easy to feel at home here. And for breakfast lovers: at Hotel Ryder’s restaurant, you start the day with fresh products in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere!

The hotel is just a stone’s throw from the city of Den Bosch. You can reach it in no time, just a 10-minute bike ride or drive. Perfect! Close to the hotel, you’ll also find Kamp Vught, an intriguing destination we’ll tell you more about later. During your weekend in Den Bosch, you can easily combine culture, history, and a cozy, vibrant atmosphere.

Tip: You can rent bikes at the hotel to easily and quickly explore the green surroundings of Vught and the city of Den Bosch.

Market hall: Het Fort Vught

On the historic barracks site, you’ll find a remarkable hotspot: the market hall Het Fort Vught. It’s the perfect place to sample a wide variety of flavors, treats, and culinary delights. Don’t miss the farm shop Heuven, known for its artisanal products, or Keilekker, where you can get the authentic worstenbroodje. Trust us—when it’s fresh and warm, it’s absolutely finger-licking good!

Reflecting on history during a visit to Kamp Vught

Kamp Vught is a place that leaves a profound impression. As the only SS concentration camp in the Netherlands, partially preserved, it offers a unique glimpse into Dutch history. Visiting here takes you a step back in time, while also providing a moment for reflection and deeper understanding.

During your visit to Kamp Vught, you walk past the original barracks, the crematorium, and the memorial site. Stories of former prisoners come to life through the exhibitions and audio recordings. This gives you a clear picture of what life in the camp was like, as well as the impact it had on society both then and now.

What makes Kamp Vught’s location so remarkable is its serene and quiet surroundings, which invite you to pause and reflect. Emotions hit hard, and the strength you can draw from the experience comes from taking the time to focus on what truly matters.

Take a walk around IJzeren Man

The art of pausing, truly feeling, and reflecting is important after a visit to Kamp Vught. A perfect place to allow yourself this moment is the IJzeren Man, a recreational lake set in a lush, wooded area just a 5-minute drive from Kamp Vught.

Here, you can take a beautiful walk around the lake, giving yourself time to process all the impressions. The charm of this area is that in summer it’s a lively destination, with people joyfully taking a dip in the water and children playing in the sand. But even in autumn, it’s a place to enjoy. The fall colors are incredibly photogenic, just like the surroundings of the IJzeren Man.
