Mexico is a popular travel destination with a rich history, diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes. In general, it can be said that Mexico is safe for travelers, but there are some important considerations. For example, the security situation in Mexico can vary depending on the region and city. Popular tourist destinations such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen are considered safer than some remote areas in the border regions and certain neighborhoods in Mexico City.

Before traveling, it is wise to consult the latest travel advisories for your country. These advise on the current security situation in different parts of Mexico. As in many countries, some cities and neighborhoods may have higher crime rates. It is wise to know which areas to avoid and which places are generally considered safe. For most travelers, it is not necessary to apply for a visa before traveling to Mexico, but this depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. Up to a stay of 180 days, you, as a Dutch national, do not need a visa for Mexico. Upon arrival, you will get a stamp in your passport with the date by which you must have left at the latest. • Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula is a natural paradise. Sian Ka'an also offers opportunities for snorkeling and swimming in the beautiful cenotes.

  • Chichén Itzá: One of Mexico's most iconic archaeological sites, famous for the pyramid of Kukulcan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a remnant of the ancient Mayan civilization.
  • The Mayan ruins in Cobá: Located deep in the jungle of Yucatán, this archaeological site offers a unique experience. You can climb the great Nohoch Mul pyramid here for a panoramic view of the lush surroundings. Cobá is known for its vast network of white roads that connected the ancient Mayan civilization. It is a wonderful place to explore Mayan history surrounded by greenery.

  • Cancun and Riviera Maya: For beautiful beaches and excellent diving and snorkeling, these destinations on the Caribbean coast are ideal.

These are just a few highlights of Mexico, there is so much to explore!

The best time to visit Mexico depends on several factors, including weather, crowds and the activities you plan to undertake. In general, however, there are certain seasons that are more favorable for visiting:

  1. High season (November-April): This is generally the best time to visit Mexico. Temperatures are pleasant and there is less rainfall. The high season also coincides with the cold winter months in many other parts of the world, making Mexico a popular sun destination during the Dutch winter. Keep in mind that this can also be the busiest season, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.

  2. Between the high season and the rainy season (May-June, September-October): These periods offer milder crowds and lower prices than the high season. May and June generally still have pleasant temperatures before the rainy season begins. September and October are the peak of hurricane season in Mexico and are sometimes avoided because of the higher chance of rain and storms.

  3. Rainy season (July-August): These months fall during the rainy season, especially in central and southern Mexico. While some parts of the country may experience heavy rainfall, northern Mexico is generally drier. However, traveling during the rainy season may still be possible, as the rain often falls in short, heavy showers.

  4. Autumn (September-October): Although this is the peak of hurricane season, it is often quieter in terms of tourists. If you want to avoid the risks of bad weather, it may be better to consider other times.

In short, the best time to visit Mexico depends on your personal preferences and the type of experience you are looking for. If you want to enjoy pleasant weather and fewer crowds, high season from November to April is ideal. If you prefer to avoid the tourist crowds and are willing to accept a little rain, the intervening periods are also good options.

Mexico's local currency is the Mexican peso, abbreviated as MXN or $ (the same symbol as the U.S. dollar). This currency is used throughout the country for daily transactions.

In many cases, you can pay with your Dutch bank card in Mexico. Many international bank cards come with a Maestro, Cirrus or VISA/Mastercard logo, allowing you to use them to withdraw money from automated teller machines (ATMs) in Mexico. This is a convenient way to get local currency for your expenses during your trip. Keep in mind that you may pay transaction fees and/or exchange rate charges when withdrawing money or making transactions with your Dutch bank card in Mexico. Consult your bank for information on these fees before you leave.
