Do you choose to a car to rent and explore Sian Ka'an, then it's good to know that you can enter the reserve through several access roads. The Sian Ka'an reserve borders a huge area covering over 5,280 km2. Because it is so large, there are several access points from which you can reach Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Traveling to Muyil: reaching the green swamp side of Sian Ka'an

If you want to see inland jungle, Mayan ruins, wetlands, freshwater lagoons, mangrove forests and canals worked by the Mayans, you will find it all from the Muyil access point to Sian Ka'an.

Muyil is one of the most beautiful sites Sian Ka'an possesses. Would you like to admire Mayan ruins? Then Muyil is the place to be. Here you can view the ruins without too many crowds. You will not experience much of the ocean side of Sian Ka'an in Muyil (no chance of spotting dolphins and turtles), but it is still a very beautiful natural environment. Muyil is therefore an ideal place for nature and culture lovers.

How can you reach Muyil?

In terms of travel time, it is easier to go to Muyil than to Punta Allen. Also, traveling to Sian Ka'an from Muyil is more economical than from Punta Allen.

Muyil is easiest to reach with a rental car, but it is also easy to do by bus. Buses run from Tulum to Muyil every half hour, so you can almost always get to Muyil by bus. The bus station you need to be at is the ADO bus station. There is no need to reserve a ticket in advance. The cost for the one-way ticket is 28 pesos (In 2020, about €1.30).

There is no direct connection from Playa del Carmen to Muyil. However, you can take the bus from Playa del Carmen to Tulum ADO.

Once you arrive in Muyil, there are two options for exploring Sian Ka'an:

  • Visit the Muyil ruins (45 pesos), walk along a boardwalk in a jungle swamp, climb to the observation tower and continue along the boardwalk to the boat docks. This takes 1 to 2 hours.
  • Head directly to the boat docks to explore Sian Ka'an by boat. If you choose to bypass the ruins and go directly to the boats, follow this directions for the route.

Traveling to Punta Allen: the blue ocean side of Sian Ka'an

The other access point to reach Sian Ka'an is through Punta Allen. Punta Allen is a quiet, remote village in Sian Ka'an with less than 300 inhabitants. There is not much to do here, but the nature and surroundings here are very beautiful.

If you want to visit the ocean side of Sian Ka'an on your own, you will have to travel to Punta Allen first. This is especially the best option if you want to take a boat out into the clear blue ocean to spot marine wildlife. Together with local fishermen you will trek to the open sea. In the crystal clear waters you might see sea turtles, dolphins and numerous birds. Because of its rich flora, Punta Allen is also a perfect place for fishing and snorkeling. The beaches are beautiful, making it a wonderful place to relax as well.

Via Punta Allen to reach Sian Ka'an.

Because of the difficult connection, it is recommended that you stay overnight in Punta Allen the day before you go to Sian Ka'an. If you want to explore the ocean side of Sian Ka'an via Punta Allen, we would really only recommend it if you spend at least 2-3 days in the immediate area. The range of accommodations in Punta Allen is limited, but the places you can stay are very nice.

The road from Playa del Carmen and Tulum to Punta Allen is an unpaved road with many stones, bumps and potholes. Therefore, if you go by car, it is only possible if you have an SUV with four-wheel drive. Don't have access to a 4×4? Then you can take the traveling by bus to Punta Allen. However, this takes a lot of time, so a rental car is recommended.
