Tirana is the heart of Albania: a vibrant and colorful city filled with fascinating contrasts. Once a grey and heavily controlled city under the communist regime, Tirana has transformed into a lively and creative destination that is well worth exploring. Wander from communist-era landmarks, historic bunkers and elegant mosques to lively bazaars, cozy cafés and trendy hotspots. Tirana is a great destination for a short city break, but it’s also the perfect starting point for a road trip through Albania. In this guide, we’ll share the best things to do in Tirana, along with our favorite tips for exploring the city.
What to do in Tirana? These are our best tips
Explore Tirana by simply getting out and wandering through its streets – it’s one of the best ways to soak up the atmosphere and experience the city. Along the way, keep these tips in mind to make the most of your time in Tirana!
1. Walk around Skanderbeg Square
Skanderbeg Square (Sheshi Skënderbej) is the heart of Tirana. This vast, pedestrianized square is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, where Albania’s history and modern-day Tirana come together. From the statue of national hero Skanderbeg, you can look out over Tirana City Hall, the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the historic Clock Tower and the iconic mosaic on the National Historical Museum. Our best tip? Come back in the evening. The square turns into a lively meeting place for locals of all ages, and it’s a great way to experience the atmosphere of Tirana.
2. Dive into history at Bunk’Art 2
To truly understand modern-day Albania, it’s worth learning more about the country’s impressive and often unsettling history. During the communist regime of dictator Enver Hoxha, hundreds of thousands of bunkers were built across Albania in preparation for potential foreign attacks. Many of them still stand today as silent reminders of this dark period.
Right in the heart of Tirana, you’ll find Bunk’Art 2, a former secret nuclear bunker that has been transformed into a thought-provoking museum. Inside its underground rooms, you’ll learn more about the communist police system, extensive networks of surveillance and the regime’s far-reaching influence on everyday life in Albania.
A visit to Bunk’Art 2 may not be the most cheerful part of your city break, but it offers valuable insight into the past that has helped shape modern Albania.
3. Admire the Grand Mosque of Tirana (Namazgah Mosque)
With its impressive domes and slender minarets, the Grand Mosque of Tirana is a striking feature of the city’s skyline. Officially opened in 2024, it is the largest Islamic place of worship in the Balkans and symbolizes the restoration of religious freedom in Albania.
4. Shop for souvenirs at Pazari i Ri Bazaar
For fresh local produce, fruit, nuts, local herbs, olives and handmade souvenirs, head to Pazari i Ri Bazaar. The colorful covered market is a lively and atmospheric place to explore. You’ll find classic souvenirs such as bracelets, pottery and, of course, plenty of fridge magnets. Around the market, you’ll also find lots of cafés and terraces where you can sit down, enjoy a drink and watch the world go by.
5. Climb the Pyramid of Tirana
One of the most striking landmarks in the city is the Pyramid of Tirana. The building was designed in 1988 as a tribute to former communist leader Enver Hoxha, but took on a completely different role after the fall of the regime. For years, the pyramid stood empty and fell into disrepair, eventually becoming known mainly as a giant canvas for graffiti. Today, the building has undergone an impressive transformation and has become a modern cultural hub.
Climb the roughly 130 steps to the top of the pyramid for panoramic views across Tirana, including a fantastic view of the Namazgah Mosque. Beneath and around the pyramid, you’ll also find several cafés that make for a great place to stop for a drink.
6. Enjoy local mezze at n’Mes restaurant
One of the places we enjoyed for dinner in Tirana was the atmospheric n’Mes Restaurant. The menu is packed with traditional Albanian dishes, but each one is prepared with a contemporary twist. We recommend ordering a platter of mezze: small Albanian dishes designed to share, allowing you to sample a variety of local flavors. Our platter was filled with creamy local dips, tender meat and flavorful vegetable dishes. Everything was delicious!
7. Wander through Tirana Castle (Justinian’s Castle)
Right in the heart of the city, near the pedestrianized Rruga Murat Toptani, you’ll find the remains of Tirana’s old castle walls. Within these historic walls, a charming courtyard has been created, filled with cozy shops, boutiques and restaurants. It’s a lovely place to wander around, browse the little shops and stop for something to eat or drink.
Where to stay in Tirana?
During our visit to Tirana, we stayed just outside the city center at Marinaj Hotel & Spa. It’s definitely one of the better hotels in Tirana, with spacious and comfortable rooms, an extensive breakfast and excellent spa and fitness facilities. We stayed here because the hotel was the official base for our Balkan Trail adventure (read all our tips and experiences!). From the hotel, you can walk to the lively city center in around 30 minutes, but taking a taxi is just as easy and quick.
Would you rather stay right in the heart of Tirana, so you can reach all the main sights on foot? Then Castle Boutique Hotel is a beautiful and charming alternative. Set within the ancient castle walls, this boutique hotel combines Albania’s rich history with the cozy atmosphere of a small-scale stay.
Getting around Tirana
Tirana’s city center is compact and easy to explore on foot, but for longer distances or trips outside the center, it’s useful to know a little about the local transport options.
There are no trams or metro systems in Tirana, so you’ll mainly rely on city buses or taxis. Bus tickets are inexpensive and can be purchased directly from the conductor. Just remember to pay in cash, preferably with the exact amount.
Taxis are affordable in Tirana, so this was our preferred way of getting around. You can usually hail a taxi on the street, but make sure the driver uses the meter. Taxis generally accept both euros and Albanian lek. Keep in mind that Uber is not currently available in Tirana.
Fun organized activities in Tirana
Looking for a fun activity or would you rather explore Tirana with a local guide? Joining an organized tour is a great option. We often book our excursions through GetYourGuide. From guided city walks and food tours to day trips into the surrounding mountains or to Lake Bovilla, there are plenty of great options to choose from.
