Leiden truly deserves its nickname, the “City of Discoveries.” This beautiful city invites you to wander through charming alleys, along picturesque canals, and discover authentic Dutch gems around every corner. During our visit, we were pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere and stunning beauty everywhere we looked. Steeped in history yet buzzing with cozy energy, Leiden offers the perfect blend for a memorable day out in The Netherlands. But what are the best things to do in Leiden? In this article, we share the best sights and insider tips to help you make the most of your city trip to Leiden!
1. The Beestenmarkt
One of the first spots to visit in Leiden is the Beestenmarkt, a triangular square right in the heart of the city. This lively landmark is where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the many outdoor cafes and vibrant atmosphere. The name Beestenmarkt comes from the cattle markets that were once held here, but today it’s all about good times and great company.
On and along the square you will find mainly restaurants, bars and a wide range of stores. You'll also find the Lido cinema here, great if you want to catch a movie during your Leiden city break. This is also where canal cruises start, one of the most popular activities in Leiden.
2. Morspoort
One of the most impressive sights in Leiden is the Morspoort. This beautiful city gate is one of the two remaining gates of Leiden, a city that once had eight. During our walk through the city, we came across this photogenic spot on the edge of the center.
What makes the Morspoort extra special is the story attached to it. The gate, also known as the Galgenpoort, refers to the lurid past of this place. At the foot of the gate used to be the gallows field, where prisoners were executed after their stay in the octagonal prison tower above the gate. Despite this dark history, today the Morspoort is a beautiful place to admire.
3. Mill 'De Put'
Continue your route from the Morspoort to one of the following interesting sights in Leiden: Mill De Put. This mill is beautifully located on the Galgewater, next to the historic Rembrandt Bridge.
Mill De Put is a replica of the original post mill built by Jan Jansenzoon Put, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1640. The current mill was rebuilt in 1987 as a tribute to this historic landmark. Surrounded by water and overlooking the charming Rembrandt Bridge, the mill offers stunning views that truly capture the authentic atmosphere of Leiden.
4. Rembrandt Square
The name Rembrandt van Rijn resonates far beyond The Netherlands. This world-renowned painter was born right here in Leiden, making the city an important part of his incredible legacy.
Crossing the Rembrandt Bridge brings you to Rembrandtplaats, or Rembrandt Square, the very spot where the famous painter was born. While his original birthplace no longer stands, a commemorative plaque marks approximately where it once was. For art lovers, it’s a must-visit location that connects you to Rembrandt’s roots.
5. The pink house on Groenhazengracht
A great recommendation is to continue along Rembrandtstraat toward Groenhazengracht. Along the waterfront, you’ll find beautiful historic Dutch buildings, but one stands out: the charming pink house. At first glance, it looks like a cheerful little home, but it has a fascinating story. In the 15th century, this area was Leiden’s red-light district, with a brothel located here. Prostitutes were nicknamed “haasjes” (which means “hares” in Dutch), and the brothel keepers were called “Groen Haasje” or “Green Hare.” This is where the name Groenhazengracht comes from.
Today, this is a charming and tidy part of town, but the colorful pink house remains a vivid reminder of its intriguing past. It’s a unique spot well worth visiting if you’re looking for interesting sights and tips in Leiden.
Also, don't forget to take a look at the Doelenpoort, which you'll find diagonally across from the pink house. This impressive gate from the 17th century adds even more historical charm to the area.
6. Rapenburg
The Rapenburg is undoubtedly one of the most iconic places in Leiden. This beautiful canal, surrounded by historic buildings and monuments, symbolizes the city's rich history.
At the corner of Groenhazengracht and Rapenburg, you'll find a magnificent old library, after which you also pass the following beautiful sights:
Leiden University: one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in The Netherlands.
Hortus Botanicus: an enchanting botanical garden where you can escape the city bustle for a while.
De Nonnenbrug (The Nuns' Bridge): a charming pedestrian bridge with a beautiful view of the canal.
Van der Werf Park: a quiet place for a short break amid the greenery.
The Kamerlingh Onnes Building: where groundbreaking scientific research has been conducted.
7. The Pieterskerk
One of the most beautiful sights in Leiden is the Pieterskerk, located on a charming square that you can reach via the Nieuwsteeg. An icon of the city for almost 900 years, this church is one of the oldest and most impressive monuments in Leiden.
Originally built as a Catholic cross basilica, the Pieterskerk has undergone several transformations over time. From a Catholic church, it eventually became a Protestant stronghold and is now a national monument of national significance. It is therefore an ideal place to discover the rich history of Leiden.
What makes this church even more special is the function it has today. Besides being a historical landmark, today the Pieterskerk is also used as an event venue.
8. The Latin School (Latijnse School)
The area around the Latin School (Latijnse School) in Leiden impressed us the most. The charming streets are lined with classic old Dutch houses, the kind that truly capture the city’s historic charm. Despite being in the heart of a lively city, this neighborhood has a distinct village-like feel that makes it especially inviting.
If you’re wondering what to do in Leiden, a visit to the Latin School and its charming surroundings is a must. This iconic building, with its distinctive red shutters, is not only a historic monument but also a place where you can walk in the footsteps of one of the greatest painters of all time: Rembrandt van Rijn.
9. The city center of Leiden: the City Hall and the Koornbrug
After exploring the charming streets surrounding the Latin School, we arrived at Leiden's iconic City Hall. This magnificent building is located in the bustling heart of the city, where it creates a lively atmosphere on a daily basis. The City Hall is not only a historical monument, but also the center of urban life in Leiden.
Near City Hall stands the Koornbrug, a stunning stone bridge that immediately caught our eye. Its stately design, complete with charming canopies on both sides, creates a unique and atmospheric spot where both locals and visitors like to pause and take in the view. It’s the perfect place to stop, soak up the surroundings, and watch the city’s daily life unfold.
After a walk along the Koornbrug, it's time for a nice lunch. An absolute must is Trattoria Italiana City Hall, located in the Town Hall on Vismarkt. This place was recommended to us several times by locals and is a nice place for anyone who loves Italian cuisine. The menu is full of delicious options.

Just beyond the Waag, you’ll find the charming Catherine Bridge (Catherinabrug), a graceful bridge that crosses the water at a unique angle. From here, you can enjoy lovely views of the Oude Rijn and the nearby Visbrug. Continuing across the bridge, you’ll arrive at the Hartebrugkerk, also known as Leiden’s Onze Lieve Vrouwenkerk.
12. The Leiden courtyards
Leiden’s city center is home to as many as 35 hidden courtyards, peaceful, idyllic spots perfect for a quiet moment. Among these are 17 historic almshouses open to visitors. While walking near the Hartebrugkerk, you’ll find the Sionshofje, a charming courtyard dating back to 1480. It’s divided into Klein Sionshofje and Groot Sionshofje. What makes this hofje unique is that it provided housing not only for women but also for married couples, quite rare for its time!
13. The Leiden Theater and Museum Lakenhal
