Utrecht, with its charming canals, historic alleys and lively atmosphere, is one of those cities where you will constantly discover new places. Besides the famous Dom tower and the atmospheric Oudegracht, Utrecht has countless hidden gems and unique spots that will make your city break extra special. We share our favorite tips for an original weekend in Utrecht!
1. Flora's Hof: an oasis of peace next to the Cathedral
Right in the vibrant heart of Utrecht, right next to the Dom Tower, is a place that many people pass by unnoticed: Flora's Court. This cozy courtyard with colorful flowers and benches is a wonderful place to catch your breath. Especially in spring, when the garden is in bloom, this is an idyllic spot to enjoy the historic atmosphere.
2. Andreashof: a hidden urban garden
Strolling through the small streets of Utrecht, you sometimes discover the most beautiful places. Such as the Andreashof, a hidden courtyard that was once a run-down part of town, but thanks to residents has been transformed into a beautiful piece of greenery. The courtyard garden is lovingly maintained by the residents themselves and feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. A perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle for a while!
3. The ABC Street: a touch of Paris in Utrecht
ABC Street is like walking into a piece of Paris. One of the most striking buildings here has a nostalgic facade with old lettering, what once seemed to be a wine shop. Today it houses a vintage shop, but the charm of yesteryear has been preserved. It really is a place off the beaten path, super fun to take a look.
4. Visschersteeg: a pretty little pink house
Walking down a small alley from the Mariaplaats, you suddenly find yourself in front of a special building: a cute little pink house that looks almost fairytale-like. The Visschersteeg is one of those hidden corners of Utrecht you would just walk past, but once you know about it, you can't skip this place.
5. Pandhof van de Dom: the most beautiful monastery garden in Utrecht
Right next to the Dom Church is a place where you can imagine yourself in the Middle Ages for a moment: the Pandhof of the Dom. This monastery garden from the 15th century is one of the most beautiful courtyard gardens in the Netherlands. The Gothic arches, ornate plants and peaceful atmosphere make this a fine place for a short break.
6. Experiencing the canals in a different way
Utrecht's canals are the heart of the city, but did you know you can explore them in different ways? Of course you can walk along the Oudegracht and enjoy the unique wharf cellars, but even more fun is to rent a boat or SUP board. That way you'll experience the city from a different perspective!
The best places to stay in Utrecht
The city of Utrecht has incredible places to stay, but we really do have a favorite hotel that we would like to tip you on. The Hunfeld is an insane boutique hotel located in the city center. The rooms are spacious and equipped with the necessary facilities. Especially nice is the suite with the bay window! Also read our personal review on overnight at The Hunfeld, you no doubt want to book a room here right away too!
A weekend away in the Netherlands
Have you discovered the charm of Utrecht and does it taste like more? The Netherlands is bursting with atmospheric cities that are perfect for a weekend getaway. Wander through the canals of Leiden, discover the creative hotspots in Eindhoven, or admire the historic downtown of Schiedam. For a mix of culture and nature Den Bosch highly recommended, where you can enjoy a cruise on the Binnendieze River and the famous Bossche bollen. Where is your next city break headed?
