Frequently asked questions about Iceland
Iceland is known for its beautiful rugged landscapes and has much to offer, but it is also important to prepare well for your trip. In this section, we answer frequently asked questions about traveling through Iceland.
The best travel time for Iceland depends on exactly what you want to do at the destination. For a road trip past waterfalls, volcanoes and green valleys, summer (June to August) is ideal. Why? The temperatures are mild, the days are long and the roads are passable.
Want to see the northern lights or enjoy the snowy landscapes? Then winter (October through March) is perfect. Do keep in mind during this period that the roads are not always very passable and local storms can occur. By the way, it is a very adventurous period to take a trip through Iceland!
If you have a Dutch or Belgian passport, you do not need a visa for Iceland. The country is part of the Schengen zone, so you can enter freely. Just make sure your passport is still valid for at least 6 months during your stay.
Yes, Iceland is known as a pricey destination. Costs for food, lodging and activities can add up quite a bit. Yet with a little planning, you can travel within a reasonable budget just fine. The way to save on costs is to go camping in Iceland. Consider renting a Van where you cook your own meals and spend the night in the middle of nature. Visiting the natural wonders are often free, so this saves again!
Layers, layers, layers! The weather in Iceland is unpredictable. Bring water- and windproof clothing, warm sweaters, thermal underwear and sturdy hiking boots. Even in summer it can be chilly, especially if you are in the mountains or near a glacier.
Definitely! A tour by rental car is one of the best ways to explore Iceland. The roads are generally good, especially the famous Ring Road. In winter, a 4×4 is recommended because of snow and black ice. Always pay attention to weather and road conditions.
A few highlights not to be missed: the Golden Circle (Thingvellir, Gullfoss, Geysir), the south coast with waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, the black beach of Reynisfjara, the Jökulsárlón glacial lake and of course the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon for relaxation.
The currency is the Icelandic krone (ISK). You hardly need cash, almost everywhere you can pay by debit or credit card, even at small kiosks or parking meters. Paying with a Dutch debit card is actually always possible. However, keep in mind that there may be a surcharge for paying with a Dutch credit card. It may therefore be interesting to consider opening a bank account at a bank such as Wise prior to your trip to Iceland. This is a tip for all foreign destinations!
Yes! From September to April you have a chance to see the northern lights, provided it is dark enough and the sky is clear. The best chances are outside the city, away from light pollution. There are also apps that give predictions about aurora chances. For example, use "My Aurora Forecast" during your trip to see what your chances are of seeing the northern lights.
