From colorful coral reefs to pink salt flats and charming Caribbean towns, Bonaire is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. During my first visit to this beautiful Dutch Caribbean island, I was immediately captivated by its vibrant colors: the crystal-clear turquoise sea, the pastel houses of Kralendijk, and the surreal landscapes of the salt pans. Wondering what to do on Bonaire? Whether you're into snorkeling, nature, or local culture, this island offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do and see on Bonaire. From must-visit attractions to hidden gems you won’t want to miss.

1. Things to do on Bonaire: snorkeling and diving

Bonaire is world-famous for its breathtaking underwater world and that reputation is well deserved. With crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life, the island is a true paradise for snorkelers and divers. What makes snorkeling on Bonaire so unique is the easy access: in most places, you can simply walk into the sea from the beach. Especially along the sheltered west coast, you'll find countless snorkeling and diving spots, ideal for both beginners and experienced divers. Whether you're spotting sea turtles, exploring coral gardens, or floating above schools of tropical fish, the underwater adventures here are unforgettable.

What makes it even more special? More than twenty percent of Bonaire and one hundred percent of the water around the island and Klein Bonaire is protected as a National Park. The Bonaire National Marine Park, the oldest marine reserve in the world, extends from the high tide line to a depth of sixty meters and covers no less than 2,600 acres of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove areas. You'll spot all kinds of fish, rays, sea urchins and sea turtles. So just imagine how incredible it is to explore all that beauty beneath the surface!

Tip: My personal favorite snorkeling spot on Bonaire is 1000 Steps. Despite the name, it’s “only” about 67 steps down to the beach, but once you're in the water, you're treated to one of the island’s most beautiful coral reefs. The visibility is fantastic, and there’s a good chance you’ll spot sea turtles gliding by. Bringing a GoPro? Definitely take it with you. The underwater views here are next-level and worth capturing!

2. Klein Bonaire: take a boat trip to this uninhabited island paradise

A visit to Klein Bonaire is a must during your stay on the island. This uninhabited gem lies just a few kilometers off the coast and is a true paradise for peace seekers, snorkelers, and nature lovers. You can reach the island in just 20 minutes with a water taxi, which runs several times a day from Kralendijk. Another option is to take a boat trip to Klein Bonaire, for example with Aqua Fun Bonaire

Klein Bonaire is famous for its serene white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. While snorkeling, there’s a good chance you’ll spot sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water. Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear, because the coral reefs around the island are teeming with colorful fish and other fascinating marine life. Even if you’re not snorkeling, Klein Bonaire is a wonderful place to unwind, soak up the sun, and experience the untouched beauty of the Caribbean. A trip here is without a doubt one of the best things to do on Bonaire.

Tip: Be sure to bring enough water, snacks, and sunscreen, as there are no facilities on Klein Bonaire. And just as important, don’t leave anything behind. Help keep this unspoiled island clean and beautiful for future visitors and the local wildlife.

Important: To gain access to Klein Bonaire, you have to pay a STINAPA Nature Fee. This fee is mandatory for all visitors to the Bonaire National Marine Park, including Lac, Klein Bonaire and Washington Slagbaai National Park. The Nature Fee costs $40 USD per person, is valid for the entire calendar year, and can easily be purchased online before your trip.

3. Wander through colorful Kralendijk

When you think of Bonaire, a visit to the colorful town of Kralendijk is an absolute must. Locals often call it Playa, and it’s easy to see why. The streets are lined with charming houses painted in every shade imaginable, from soft mint green to vibrant flamingo pink. The bright yellow buildings especially stand out, and there’s a story behind that cheerful color. Originally chosen for government buildings, the yellow hue still marks several prominent landmarks in the city center today, adding to Kralendijk’s unique and lively atmosphere.

Wander through the narrow streets, soak up the charm of the local architecture, and treat yourself to a delicious cup of coffee or a refreshing ice cream. Along the way, you’ll find quaint boutiques offering unique clothing, local art, and souvenirs.

 4. Washington Slagbaai National Park

This vast nature reserve in the northwest of the island covers over 5,600 hectares and offers an impressive combination of rugged landscapes, cactus forests, salt pans and secluded beaches. You can spot flamingos, iguanas and other wildlife in their natural habitat here. It is best to explore the park by rental car, as the roads are mostly unpaved.

Do you prefer to go on an organized tour with a guide? Then I would definitely recommend Bonaire Tours & Vacations too! Also, this day tour to the Washington Slagbaai National Park from GetYourGuide is highly recommended.

5. Visit Bonaire's salt flats

Did you know that Bonaire can harvest salt from the Caribbean Sea indefinitely? In fact, the island’s salt reserves are considered virtually infinite. Bonaire’s salt pans are not only a fascinating natural phenomenon but also an important part of the island’s history. Located along the south coast, on the road to Washington Slagbaai National Park, these centuries-old salt fields have been used for salt production for generations. The salt flats create a stunning, colorful landscape where the vibrant pink water contrasts beautifully with the white salt mountains and surrounding nature. The striking pink color comes from special microorganisms that thrive in the salty water, making Bonaire’s salt pans a unique and picturesque sight to explore.

Bonaire’s salt pans have played a crucial role in the island’s economy for centuries, but they also carry a darker history. During the era of slavery, enslaved people were forced to perform grueling labor in the salt industry. Near the salt pans, you can still find the so-called “slave houses”, small, simple huts where the slaves who worked at the salt flats slept, often crowded together in harsh conditions. It’s hard to imagine the harsh reality they endured. Visiting this historical site offers a powerful opportunity to reflect on Bonaire’s slavery past and honor the resilience of those who lived through it.

Today, Bonaire’s salt pans remain vital not only to the island’s economy but also to its natural environment. These unique salt flats provide an important habitat for flamingos and a variety of other bird species. For bird watchers, the salt pans are an excellent spot to observe these beautiful birds in their natural surroundings.

Tip: Don't forget to bring a bag as you are allowed to take a handful of salt as a souvenir!

6. Things to do on Bonaire: windsurfing

Bonaire is a true hotspot for windsurfers, and Sorobon Beach is especially popular thanks to its calm lagoon surrounded by mangroves and protected by a natural coral barrier. Interested in learning how to windsurf? Then go to French Paradise. The instructors here are incredibly enthusiastic and supportive, providing excellent training that helps you master the basics quickly. This makes it perfect for first-timers who want to get the hang of windsurfing in a safe and fun environment. I really enjoyed my lesson and can’t wait to do it again next time I’m back on Bonaire!

7. Chilling at beach clubs on Bonaire

On Bonaire, the ultimate island vibe isn’t just about snorkeling and diving, it’s also about unwinding at one of the island’s fantastic beach clubs. One of my favorites is Ocean Oasis. This stylish beach club offers a luxurious setting with comfortable sunbeds and insanely delicious cocktails. Especially during sunset, the atmosphere becomes truly magical. Imagine sipping your drink while the sky slowly transforms into warm, glowing hues.

Another favorite is Sebastian's, located on the beautiful Sorobon Beach. Here, you overlook the crystal-clear waters of Lac Bay. While it’s perfect for lounging during the day, dining here at night is, in my opinion, truly something special, with the gentle sounds of the bay and a magical ambiance that makes every meal unforgettable.

For a laid-back vibe, head to Hang Out Beach Bar at Lac Bay. Hang Out Beach Bar is the go-to spot for windsurfers and sunbathers alike. With its laid-back vibe, colorful cocktails, and tasty food, it’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the Bonaire sunshine.

8. Flamingo spotting at Lake Goto

Here, you’ll find the quintessential Bonairean scene: vast landscapes dotted with kadushi cacti and elegant flamingos! Lake Goto, located in northwestern Bonaire, is one of the best spots to see flamingos in the wild. Set against a stunning backdrop of cacti and rolling hills, this saltwater lake serves as an important breeding ground for these iconic pink birds. For the best chance to see large flocks gracefully wading through the shallow waters in search of food, visit in the early morning or late afternoon.

Make sure to stop at the lookout point along the road for a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Goto and its colorful inhabitants. Don’t forget your camera, this spot is one of the most photogenic places on Bonaire! Just remember to keep your distance and avoid disturbing the flamingos. These shy birds deserve peace and quiet to carry on their natural behavior undisturbed.

9. Try the local liquor at Cadushy Distillery

Did you know that the kadushi cactus is also used to make a unique local liqueur? It’s definitely something you have to try when you’re on Bonaire and, for that, Cadushy Distillery is the place to be. The distillery is located in Rincon, Bonaire’s oldest settlement. Here, you can learn how the kadushi cactus is transformed into a surprisingly smooth and delicious liqueur. And of course, during your visit, you’ll have the chance to taste a variety of flavors!

10. Visit the Seru Largu viewpoint

For a breathtaking panoramic view of Bonaire, head to Seru Largu, one of the island’s highest points. Perched on a hill, this lookout offers stunning vistas of Kralendijk, Klein Bonaire, and the sparkling Caribbean Sea. Especially during sunrise or sunset, the golden light transforms the landscape into a magical scene that’s not to be missed.

11. Dos Pos hike Bonaire: discover the beautiful 4 km trail

Ready to explore Bonaire in an active and surprising way? The Dos Pos hike is a beautiful 4-kilometer trail through the island’s pristine northern landscape. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by rolling hills, kadushi cacti, and a variety of birds, including colorful parrots and parakeets.

The hike starts at Dos Pos Spring and is fairly easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as shade is limited along the trail. It’s a fun and rewarding way to discover a lesser-known, but incredibly beautiful part of Bonaire. Especially if you go with Sanne, the enthusiastic guide from Discover Bonaire

12. Rent a car and roadtrip around the island

Bonaire is the perfect island for an adventurous road trip! Small enough to explore in just a few days, yet packed with hidden gems worth taking your time for. My advice? Take it slow and soak in that laid-back Bonaire vibe for as long as you can, because that’s what makes this island so special.

Rent a car during your vacation to explore Bonaire’s most beautiful beaches, national parks, and historical sites at your own pace. The roads are well-maintained, making it easy to reach quiet, remote spots that are hard to access by public transport.

For trustworthy car rental, I'd recommend Sunnycars. They provide reliable service with an all-inclusive price and no hidden fees, so you can explore the island worry-free.
