Opatija is the largest and most famous city on the Opatija Riviera, also known as the Flower Riviera. Located in northern Croatia, the Riviera consists of several villages and towns and stretches over an area of no less than 40 kilometers. The town of Opatija is beautifully situated on the Adriatic Sea and is a popular vacation destination because of its rich history, impressive buildings and mild climate. Especially during summer months, but did you know that Opatija is also very atmospheric during the winter months? Find out in this article what is fun to do in Opatija!

1. Stroll along the mile-long Lungomare

Along the Opatija Riviera runs the Lungomare, a 12-kilometer-long seaside promenade. The promenade begins in the cozy fishing village of Volosko and continues all the way to the coastal town of Lovran. It is an insanely beautiful walk to take because it takes you past all kinds of nice restaurants and stores, but you also walk past beautiful villas and photogenic coves.

The fishing village of Volosko

Our favorite spot on the Opatija Riviera is the picturesque Volosko which is originally a fishing village. The centerpiece is therefore the harbor, called Mandrac. On both sides of the harbor you will find old lighthouses and, of course, in the harbor there are several fishing boats. If you admire the village from the harbor, you will notice that the houses are built against the mountain. This is an incredibly photogenic picture. Wander through the streets of Volosko and be surprised by the beautiful vistas over the sea.Ā

Tip: slide onto the terrace of Kaokakao for a cup of coffee and a blissful homemade pastry.

2. Admire various sights in Opatija

If you are in Opatija, you will notice that there are many buildings with a neoclassical architectural style. This is because many of these buildings date back to the period when the Opatija Riviera belonged to the Habsburg Empire. A time when Opatija obtained spa status and many royal families had lavish vacation homes built here. Consequently, there are several impressive sights that you can admire in Opatija.

Villa Angiolina

The great thing about Opatija is that it was originally a fishing village that has developed over the years into an atmospheric tourist destination. The construction of Villa Angiolina in 1844 marks the start of tourism in Opatija. In fact, the villa was built in by Iginio Scarpa and was put into use as a vacation home on the Croatian coast. This was the reason for more people to settle here and thus the fishing village flourished.

Maiden with the seagull

In the old port of Opatija stands the "maiden with the seagull" statue, an iconic landmark in Opatija. For as the story goes, this statue stands on the original spot where the statue of Madonna Del Mare previously stood. In 1891, when Arthur Kesselstadt was killed during a storm at sea, she was supposed to watch over his lost soul. However, this statue was damaged and was replaced in 1956 by the statue of the woman with the seagull.Ā

Hike through the Učka Mountains

The town of Opatija lies at the foot of the Učka Mountains, so the area is perfect for active hiking. Have you seen the Lungamare and are ready for something different? Then climbing to the top of Učka Mountain is a fun challenge to do in Opatija. From 1,400 meters above sea level, you have a beautiful view of the Bay of Kvarner and on a clear day you can even see Venice. The hike to the top does require a few hours, but on the way you will enjoy several beautiful views, caves and spot several bird species.

A day trip to Krk

Located off the coast near Opatija, the island of Krk is the second largest island in the Adriatic. One of the reasons to visit the island. Another reason is that you can get there easily and quickly from Opatija because of the bridge connecting the mainland to the island. Within 40 minutes you can enjoy wonderful island atmospheres that of course include tasting local wines and delicacies. Visit the village of Vrbnik with the narrowest street in the world and relax on one of the beautiful beaches. Don't have a rental car? Then you can also travel to Krk by boat.

3. Eat out at Bevanda restaurant

Restaurant Bevanda is one of the chicest restaurants in Opatija and eating out here is definitely a must-do. You will find a small terrace along the quay where you can sit and enjoy a snack and drink while the sea water laps against the quay below you. At the restaurant you can enjoy delicious dishes, refined service and panoramic sea views. You will find the restaurant on a small peninsula, near Lido Beach.Ā

4. Stay overnight at the 5-star Ambasador wellness hotel

To this day, the lavish properties and neoclassical architectural style form the luxurious character of Opatija. It is therefore a destination in Croatia that is home to many magnificent hotels, such as the 5-star Ambasador wellness hotel. Although from the outside the hotel is an eyesore for many locals, inside it is to pass through a ring.

Ambasador Hotel Opatija

With a stunning location on the Lungomare, the Ambasador is one of the most luxurious hotels in Opatija. You will stay in beautiful rooms with views of the sea or the Učka Mountains, and you can enjoy fine wellness facilities and fine dining in one of the restaurants. On average, a hotel stay costs between €120 - €300 per night, this of course depends on the season.

5. Visit the Christmas market in Angiolina park

If you visit Opatija during the winter months, make sure you are there when the town is attractively decorated in Christmas lights. In fact, the Christmas markets in Opatija are considered one of the most enjoyable in Croatia. The winter Christmas atmosphere and Adriatic coastal atmosphere together create a very special mood at the Christmas markets. Thus, you will find not only Christmas trees with Christmas lights and baubles, but also palm trees with cute decorations. The Angiolina park is the highlight of the Christmas activities in Opatija and should not be missed!
