A Mediterranean climate, the most colorful towns, ancient history and a rich culture, do I need to say more? Malta has all the ingredients for a unique getaway (not to mention the diverse and especially delicious cuisine). At about a three-hour flight from Amsterdam, Malta is the ideal destination if you don't want to travel too far, but still want to experience the ultimate vacation feeling. These are the best things to do while visiting Malta.Ā
A brief history lesson: the archipelago of MaltaĀ
The archipelago of Malta consists of five (!) islands and is located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the Italian island of Sicily. By far the most famous islands are: Malta, Gozo and Comino. With its strategic location, Malta was home to numerous different foreign empires and peoples for centuries; from the Romans to the Knights to St. John and Morren to the British. All left an indelible mark on Maltese society and culture. For example, driving on the left is still practiced in Malta.Ā
By the way, did you know that the main island of Malta is about 1.5 times the size of Texel? A crazy realization, but this does make it easy to get to every place of interest.Ā
Discover Malta's most beautiful towns and villages
Malta is known as a sunny beach destination. Understandably, because even in the autumn months it is lovely to stay in Malta, with around 23 degrees. But did you know that Malta is also full of photogenic towns and villages? Stroll through the narrow streets and imagine yourself back in time in the most beautiful towns of Malta.Ā
1. Mdina
Mdina is the former capital of Malta and the setting for many movies and series, such as Game of Thrones. After being greeted by the majestic city gate (the only access road to the city), you will discover hidden gems in the old and car-free center while strolling. The sandy yellow stones in the light of the setting sun color the city almost magically golden.Ā
Exciting fact: Mdina is also known as The Silent City. According to old legends, it is even said to be haunted at night....
2. Marsaxlokk
Marsaxlokk is an endearing fishing village, where the harbor is colored by hundreds of traditional fishing boats. Be sure to stop here at the seafood restaurant Tartarun. At this friendly family business, you will be served the tastiest fresh (fish) catch daily.Ā
3. Valletta
Valletta is the vibrant capital of Malta and without a doubt one of my favorite cities on this earth (really). Here too you'll find handsome streets galore and you can't ignore the interesting history of the island. Want to escape from all the impressions? Experience the tranquility in the Upper Barraka Gardens, enjoy the panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and don't miss the ceremonial salutes (punctually at noon and 4 p.m.). And for the art lovers among us, admire Caravaggio's famous paintings in the impressive St. John's Cathedral, where almost everything is covered in gold leaf.Ā
Tip: visit Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th-century palace and (still) the home of the noble De Piro family. Among all the splendor, imagine yourself back in time for a moment.Ā
4. Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua
The Three Cities used to be the focal point of Malta, but today they don't always seem to make it to the to-do-list of tourists. So take the opportunity to visit these cities, each with its own character, and discover the authentic existence of their inhabitants.Ā
Tip: Make your way through the narrow streets of Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa) to the harbor, where you can take a typical Maltese gondola to cross to Valletta.Ā
Fan out on the Dingli Cliffs
Leave the bustle of the city behind and also discover the other side of Malta: nature.Ā The impressive Dingi Cliffs can be found on the west coast. This twelve-kilometer-long rock formation about 200 meters high gives you an insane view of the Mediterranean Sea, where with clear weather you can also spot the tiny island of Filfla.Ā
Once you arrive at the cliffs, you cannot miss the St. Magdalene Chapel. The 17-century chapel symbolizes the highest point on the island (250 meters above sea level) and serves as the perfect vantage point. Take a seat on the bench next to the chapel and dream away for a while, with the wind through your hair and the sun on your face.Ā
Tip: Combine the trip to Mdina with a visit to the Dingi Cliffs.Ā
Discover Maltese cuisine: to lick your fingers at
Maltese cuisine is like a culinary trip around the world. You can taste the foreign influences and make every restaurant visit a surprise. Especially the traditional wine bar Cent'Anni in the equally charming village of Għargħur, left an indelible impression. So don't miss this if you are fond of classic Italian dishes and open to a (divine) twist. Also, the restaurants Il Pirata, Verbena, Cafe Jubilee and Maggie's make my mouth water even now. Fun fact: the last restaurant is named after the owners' (way too cute) dog.
Where to stay in Malta?Ā
In Malta you won't find massive resorts, but mostly small-scale boutique hotels. One out of thousands is the atmospheric Mulburries. The hotel is built and run by a loving couple. They strive to give every vacationer the ultimate moment of tranquility, so they offer candlelight yin yoga classes and there is a lovely private spa. In addition, sustainability and everything local are highly valued, so at breakfast fresh products from their own garden and kitchen. A perfect base to discover the island, if you ask me.Ā
Prefer to spend the night like a true celebrity? The luxurious Iniala Harbour House in the heart of Valletta offers you this opportunity. The hotel also has a restaurant, where not only the food but also the view of the Grand Harbour deserves a star.Ā
Take a day trip to Gozo, Malta's undiscovered sister
Gozo is often thought of as Malta's humble sister: less discovered, but equally enchanting. The islands each have a unique character; where Malta is known for its vibrant city life, Gozo offers a wealth of unspoiled nature and an authentic island experience, almost as if time has stood still. It is therefore incredibly fun to visit Gozo for a day during your vacation to Malta. Curious about what you can do there? These are 5 fun tips to do on Gozo!
