During our road trip through this region, we explored several of these unique schist villages, each boasting its own distinct character. From cozy mountain hamlets offering incredible local cuisine, to hidden natural gems surrounded by scenic hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints. In this article, we share our five favorite Aldeias do Xisto that you absolutely can't miss on your journey through Central Portugal.
What are the Aldeias do Xisto?
The Aldeias do Xisto are a collection of 27 historic villages nestled in the interior of Central Portugal, built using local schist. This dark slate stone gives the villages their characteristic, timeless appearance. The origins of many of these settlements date back to the 17th to 19th centuries, though some roots run even deeper into history. For centuries, these villages were home to farmers and shepherds who depended entirely on the rugged mountainous terrain and the natural materials available around them.
This traditional building style, combining schist and timber, did more than just create sturdy homes capable of withstanding the harsh mountain climate; it gave the villages a unique, almost mystical charm. However, during the second half of the 20th century, many residents migrated to larger cities in search of work, causing several of these stone villages to slowly fall into ruin.
In recent years, these villages have been beautifully revitalized. Today, they form a unique tourist route through the lush, mountainous heart of Portugal. A destination where nature, tranquility, and age-old traditions take center stage.
Where are the schist villages located?
The Aldeias do Xisto are located in the interior of Central Portugal, scattered across a mountainous region between the cities of Coimbra and Castelo Branco. Rather than a single connected cluster, they are divided into different regional groups that together form a scenic route through one of the country’s most unspoiled areas.
The villages are roughly spread across three main territories: the Serra da Lousã, the Serra do Açor, and the Zêzere River region. Each area boasts its own unique landscape and atmosphere. For instance, the villages in the Serra da Lousã are famous for their deep green mountains and dense forests, whereas the Serra do Açor feels more rugged, wild, and secluded. Around the Zêzere River, you will find more open landscapes, winding riverbanks, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints.
This variety is exactly what makes a road trip along the Aldeias do Xisto so special. Within short driving distances, you travel through completely different landscapes, all while the villages share the same iconic slate architecture.
Our 5 favorite Aldeias do Xisto in Portugal
During our journey through Central Portugal, we visited several Aldeias do Xisto. Although there are 27 official schist villages, a few truly stood out to us. These are our 5 favorite slate villages in Portugal. Places that, in our opinion, best showcase why this region is so incredibly special:
1. Talasnal: the most atmospheric slate village in Portugal
Talasnal is one of the most atmospheric Aldeias do Xisto, tucked away in the mountains of the Serra da Lousã. The village consists of a maze of narrow alleyways, schist houses, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the green hills.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Talasnal was still a bustling village with over 120 inhabitants, a school, and olive presses. Due to its remote location, residents slowly migrated away starting in the 1980s, leaving the village largely deserted. Today, it is often said that Jorge is the only permanent resident of Talasnal, giving the village an almost abandoned yet highly unique and personal character.
During our visit, we met Jorge at Bar O Curral, a quirky little bar set inside an old mule stable. He runs a small but characterful café here. Inside, it feels as though time has stood still: old liquor bottles, vintage keys, and all kinds of antique objects fill the room. Outside, you can sit on a cozy terrace with a view over the village and the surrounding hills.
In addition to the bar, Jorge also owns a number of beautifully restored schist houses in Talasnal, where you can enjoy a unique overnight stay right in the historic heart of the village. The accommodations range from simple, authentic one-bedroom houses to larger homes with multiple bedrooms. Some properties even feature a small private pool, which feels extra special in this mountainous setting.

2. Casal de São Simão: a hidden gem among the mountains
Casal de São Simão is one of the smallest and most hidden Aldeias do Xisto, quietly tucked away in the landscape of Central Portugal. The village literally consists of just one photogenic street, lined with beautifully restored slate houses and flanked by green hills.
Although the village emptied out almost completely in the twentieth century, it now radiates a wonderfully pleasant, authentic atmosphere. Today, only a handful of people live here, ensuring that you can wander around in total peace without encountering crowds of other tourists.
What makes a visit to Casal de São Simão truly spectacular is its immediate surroundings. Directly from the village, you can walk straight to the impressive gorge of the Fragas de São Simão. A network of wooden boardwalks and stairs guides you down to the emerald-green river. The contrast between the serene, cozy slate village on top of the hill and the wild nature down in the gorge is absolutely fantastic.
3. Cerdeira: culinary highlights in a slate village
Cerdeira is perhaps the most inspiring slate village in the entire region. While many other Aldeias do Xisto primarily remind visitors of the harsh farming life of the past, Cerdeira today breathes art and creativity. The beautifully restored houses now serve as studios and accommodations for international artists who gather here to create in the serene tranquility of the Serra da Lousã.
But it is not just art that stimulates the senses here; on a culinary level, Cerdeira has recently welcomed an absolute top-tier addition.
We had an incredible dining experience at Restaurant Essences. This restaurant had just opened during our visit, but it immediately caused quite a stir in the culinary world. What makes it truly remarkable is that it was officially included in the prestigious Michelin Guide just two weeks after opening.
Led by the talented chef Ferran Arnau, you can enjoy a unique 'gastronomy of the landscape' here. The menu features refined dishes where local ingredients from the surrounding nature take absolute center stage. Each plate is a work of art in itself, capturing the flavors of the region's mountains and forests. An absolute must-visit for foodies who want to experience the authentic flavors of Central Portugal at the highest level!
4. Pedrógão Pequeno: views over the river and reservoir
Pedrógão Pequeno proves that the Aldeias do Xisto offer much more than just dense forests and cozy mountain valleys. This larger slate village sits on a strategic hilltop and treats you to some of the most impressive panoramas in the entire region. The ultimate eye-catcher here is the spectacular view over the winding Zêzere River and the immense Cabril Reservoir (Albufeira do Cabril).
Although many houses here have been plastered white over the centuries, you can still see the characteristic schist architecture everywhere in the details, walls, and foundations of the village. Strolling through the narrow streets, you will come across charming whitewashed chapels and historic manor houses that hint at the rich past of this location.
For the active traveler, Pedrógão Pequeno is a true paradise. It serves as the starting point for several beautiful hiking trails that lead you along the steep banks of the river. A definite recommendation is the hike to the historic Roman bridge (Ponte Filipina), which lies hidden deep within the gorge.
5. Figueira: one of the most remote schist villages
If you truly want to disappear off the grid for a while, Figueira is the place to be. This is one of the most authentic and remote Aldeias do Xisto. The residents here live at a wonderfully slow pace, and the sense of community remains traditionally strong.
We discovered this local culture in the best way possible: through our stomachs! In the village's traditional, communal wood-fired oven, we learned how to bake tigelada beirã, a delicious traditional egg dessert native to this region. After baking, we sat down around noon for an extensive lunch at restaurant Casa da Ti’Augusta, where we sampled various genuine regional dishes. For dessert, we were served our very own tigelada, fresh and warm straight out of the wood oven! An incredibly hospitable and unique experience that completes your visit to this remote slate village.
Why visiting the Aldeias do Xisto is worth it
The Aldeias do Xisto showcase an authentic side of Portugal, far away from the crowds of the coastline and the famous cities. Here, it is all about small villages with schist houses, narrow alleyways, and a peaceful pace of life that has remained virtually unchanged for generations.
Because these villages are so remotely located, you truly get off the beaten path and feel the tranquility of the interior. While mass tourism takes over elsewhere, you can still find pure peace here. You can easily chat with locals, drive through mountainous landscapes, and combine your visit with scenic hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints.
Since Central Portugal is still a hidden gem, the prices for food, overnight stays, and activities are still surprisingly low. And it is a true paradise for foodies, because the food here is incredibly pure, locally sourced, and prepared with love.

How do you reach the slate villages?
The best, and really the only, way to properly explore Portugal’s Schist Villages is by car. These villages are tucked away deep in the mountains, and public transport options are extremely limited. We recommend renting a car through Sunny Cars. How much time do you need?
For a good impression of the Aldeias do Xisto, you will need at least 2-3 days. This will give you time to visit several villages, make occasional walks and also really experience the tranquility of the region. What is the best travel time?
The schist villages can be visited year-round, but each season has its own unique charm:
Spring (April to June): Our absolute favorite. Nature is beautifully green, everything is in bloom, and temperatures are perfect for hiking.
Fall (September through October): Also a wonderful period. The peak summer heat has passed, and the autumn colors give the slate villages an extra warm, mystical atmosphere.
Summer (July and August): It can get very hot in the interior (often above 30°C). The advantage, however, is that you can perfectly cool down at the many praias fluviais (river beaches) in the region, such as the one at the Fragas de São Simão gorge.
Staying overnight in and around the schist villages in Portugal
