Arequipa is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Peru. The city breathes history and this is mainly because the architecture here is so well preserved. Magnificent buildings with overwhelming arches, cobblestone avenues and imposing cathedrals ensure that almost every corner of Arequipa could be on a postcard. Arequipa is also called "the White City" because of the many white rocks "sillar" you see in the historic downtown area. But Arequipa's surroundings are also insane. In fact, you'll find some of Peru's most beautiful natural wonders here, such as the Colca Canyon! Are you planning to travel to Peru? Then don't miss Arequipa!

The colonial city of Arequipa in Peru

Arequipa is a major industrial and commercial center of Peru and is considered the second industrial city in the country. What we really liked about Arequipa is that here you really get a picture of the daily life of the locals in Peru. Even though there are a lot of tourists, it still feels very authentic. The streets are crowded and there are stalls selling everything. You will also feast your eyes on all the colonial buildings around you. We recommend strolling around Arequipa for a few hours without a plan and to be surprised by everything you see.

Location between volcanoes

It is located at an altitude of just over 2,300 meters and is surrounded by 3 volcanoes: the Misti, the Chachani and the Pichu Pichu volcanoes. The Misti is an active volcano and, with its permanently covered snow peak, is Peru's most famous volcano. You can even climb the Misti volcano. The volcano is about 5,800 meters high, so the climb is not for everyone, but it is definitely a challenge!

Climate

In Arequipa, there is a temperate Andean climate. The average annual temperature for Arequipa is 16°C. There is not much rain, but when there is rain, it is often torrential downpours. We were in Arequipa in March and still had quite a bit of rain. Also, we were glad we had our coats with us!

The best sights of Arequipa in Peru

With magnificent museums, cathedrals, monasteries and other historic buildings on almost every street corner, it is almost impossible to see everything in Arequipa. Still, there are some highlights and sights that are absolutely worth a visit.

1. The Santa Catalina Monastery

One of the main highlights of Arequipa is the Santa Catalina Monastery. Behind the tall, thick walls of the Santa Catalina Monastery hides an entire city inhabited for centuries by hundreds of nuns. The Santa Catalina Monastery was built in 1579 and the complex spans a whopping 20,000 square meters. This makes it one of the largest monasteries in the world!

Today it is still an important site for a small religious community. Like many places in the city, it is built of volcanic sillar rock. The red, blue and white walls are typical of the architecture. Its narrow streets, courtyards and stunning details make the monastery a beautiful, photogenic place to visit in Arequipa.

The entrance fee to the monastery is 40 Peruvian sol. Would you like to learn more about the monastery? Then you can choose to book a guided tour on site or in advance via GetYourGuide

2. Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas is the historic heart of Arequipa and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is an atmospheric square where you will see many locals congregating. Around the square you will find several attractions, including the cathedral: the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa.

3. Mundo Alpaca

When you say Peru, of course you also say alpacas! So when we heard that there is a small alpaca museum in Arequipa, of course we had to take a look. Mundo Alpaca is a unique alpaca-focused venue that brings together tourism, education, responsible buying and selling and zoology. For example, here you can learn more about the different animal species and the alpaca wool process, but there are also alpacas you can feed. There is also a nice little store. The complex is maintained by Sol Alpaca, a retail brand that sells alpaca wool products. The little tour you get here is free.

Arequipa's tastiest hotspots

Everywhere you go in Peru you will find plenty of delicious hotspots, so too in Arequipa. From coffee shops to restaurants, the choice here is huge. Be sure to try some of the local Peruvian cuisine in Arequipa, too!

1. 13 Monjas

In one of the beautiful buildings in Arequipa you will find the restaurant 13 Monjas. The cuisine offers international and Peruvian dishes and is incredibly varied. The atmosphere here is also very nice. When we were in Arequipa, unfortunately it was not very warm and sunny, but we could totally imagine ourselves here on the terrace with a nice drink!

2. Puku Puku Café

Wherever we travel, we are always on the lookout for great coffee hotspots. Peru is a very sophisticated coffee country, so we had to explore here as well. A fun coffee hotspot in Arequipa is Puku Puku Café. It's a small, cozy store with good coffee and pastries. The cakes are big, but nice and fluffy!

3. Espacio Lagom

Did we mention that sushi in Peru is a very good idea? All over Peru you can find sushi stores that have put their own spin on this popular Japanese dish. In the heart of Arequipa, you'll find Espacio Lagom, a restaurant where they serve different kinds of special sushi combinations. But this joint is also known for the many different beers you can drink here, so for both the sushi lover and the beer fanatic, this hot spot is a must!

Where and how long should you stay in Arequipa?

Arequipa is a big city and so there are countless accommodations to be found. The best part is staying in the historic heart of Arequipa. That way all the sights and fun hotspots are within walking distance.

There is more than enough to do in the center and surrounding areas of Arequipa to keep you entertained for several days. Set aside at least 1 full day to explore the city! Would you also like to make other excursions, such as the Misti volcano and the Colca Canyon? Then it is advisable to allow at least 1 day for each activity.

How to get to Arequipa?

There are several ways to travel to Arequipa. The most common ways are to catch the night bus from Nazca to Arequipa (if you are traveling from Lima to Cusco) or the night bus from Cusco to Arequipa (if you are just traveling from Cusco to Lima). The bus tours can be booked through Cruz del Sur and these routes both take about 10 hours. The night buses are very comfortable, you have plenty of leg room and there is a toilet on board. Ticket prices start at about 50 Peruvian sol, which converts to about €12.00. Do you like to determine your itinerary in advance? Then we recommend Peruhop's bus tickets!

There is also an airport in Arequipa (Rodríguez Ballón International Airport), so you can also travel to this city by plane. This is obviously more expensive than traveling by bus, but it will get you to your destination quickly. There are only direct flights from Lima (1.5-hour flight) and Cusco (1-hour flight) to Arequipa.

Colca Canyon

A day trip from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon

Not to be missed in Peru is the Colca Canyon. This beautiful valley is over 230 kilometers from Arequipa and is the second deepest valley in the world. Also, this is where you can spot condors. These are large, vulture-like birds of prey with a wingspan of up to three (!) meters.

The Colca Canyon is often visited from Arequipa and you can do this as a day trip or as a multi-day trek. We were in Peru for 12 days, so opted for the day trip. If you go one day, keep in mind that the alarm goes off early. We were picked up at 03:00 for our trip. Unfortunately, we visited the Colca Canyon in the rainy season (in March) and the sky was not clear enough to spot condors. Unfortunately, the views of the valley were also disappointing. Are you traveling in the rainy season? Then we would really recommend doing a multi-day trek. The sky clears up in the course of the day and because you are hiking for several days, you do have much more chance of beautiful views!

Highly recommended is this two-day tour to the Colca Canyon
