Miraflores, you may have heard of this neighborhood in Lima if you are planning a tour of Peru. In fact, Miraflores in Lima is one of the city's most popular neighborhoods and among the wealthiest places in Peru. There is an awful lot to do in Miraflores, such as taking a stroll along the promenade Malecón de Miraflores and learning to surf. Miraflores is a place to love, if only because Lima is the most acclaimed culinary city in Latin America and you can find some of Peru's (and the world's!) very best hotspots in Miraflores. In addition, it is also the ideal starting point for a tour of Peru. You can easily spend several days here. So we share our tips for Miraflores in Peru, from the best things to do in Miraflores to the finest places to stay.
What to do in Miraflores in Lima: sights and to do's
Miraflores is the epicenter of Lima and, as we mentioned, the most affluent and exclusive neighborhood. As such, it is definitely a bit more expensive here than other places in Peru, but there are plenty of attractions, such as parks and markets, where you can absolutely have fun without paying a whole lot. These are the best things to see and do in Miraflores, Peru:
1. Take the free city tour of Miraflores' highlights
Surely the best way to get to know a city is with a (free) city walk. There are several to do and most walks often start as early as Miraflores, so that's convenient. Highly recommended is the Free Walking Tour of Inkan Milky Way.
2. Stroll along the boardwalk: Malecón de Miraflores
One of the attractions in Miraflores that we like to tip is the Malecón, also known as the Miraflores Boardwalk. This is Miraflores' iconic boardwalk. During this beautiful walk, you will walk over cliffs and have stunning views of the Pacific coast. Along the coastline, you will see many surfers on the water. Not surprisingly, because the beach here is popular among surfers worldwide. It is also called the surfing mecca of South America.
3. Admire El Parque Del Amor
Parque del Amor is a small, colorful park with flower beds and architecture with beautiful views of the coast. You will pass this point as you walk along the Malecón. The curved benches with mosaic probably look familiar to you if you have ever been to Barcelona, as the park was inspired by Parc Güell in Barcelona! Tip: come here at sunset!
Next to this colorful place you will find the creperie Beso Francés (of which you have several scattered throughout Lima, by the way). You eat and drink tasty crepes and smoothies here overlooking the coastline.
4. See the imposing lighthouse Faro La Marina
Faro la Marina is a 22-meter-high lighthouse built in 1900 on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can walk from Parque Del Amor to this lighthouse in 10 minutes, but you will already encounter beautiful viewpoints along the way.
5. Stroll along the stores of shopping mall Larcomar
Larcomar is the largest and most popular shopping center in Miraflores. A few hours of great shopping is always nice, of course, but the stylish mall is also in a special location. It is carved out of the cliffs and you have a very nice view. You will find many stores, restaurants and cafes, as well as a cinema and in the evening the trendy nightlife.
You can buy nice Peruvian souvenirs, but because of the 17 restaurants located here, you can also find fine places to have a nice dinner and drink a Pisco Sour. A tip for delicious Peruvian-style sushi is restaurant Popular!
6. Go paragliding or learn to surf
Playa Waikiki, doesn't that sound tropical? It sure is! This fine beach in Miraflores is a tribute to the iconic and eponymous Hawaiian beach. It is the place for surfers, especially because it is one of the cleanest beaches, because it is almost never crowded and, of course, because of the good waves. You will find several surf schools offering lessons, including for beginners.
Another super fun activity is paragliding. On a paragliding trip, you will soar over the ocean and the Costa Verde cliffs of Miraflores.
Where is the best place to stay in Miraflores, Lima?
Almost all tours of Peru begin in Lima, and in this city Miraflores is the ideal base. In terms of accommodations, there are many different options in Miraflores, also in different price ranges. For example, we stayed in the brand new Pullman Miraflores Hotel in the heart of Miraflores, but Selina Miraflores Lima is also recommended if you want to be a little more affordable.
1. Pullman Miraflores Hotel
The recently opened Pullman Hotel is a gem in Miraflores. This magnificent boutique hotel offers comfortable rooms and is equipped with all conveniences. An overnight stay at the hotel costs on average between €180.00 and €250.00 per night (in 2024). So Pullman does lie in a slightly higher price range. What we found especially super about Pullman was the insane rooftop bar with the pool. The rooftop bar Alba is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Lima and you have an almost 360° view of the city. Perhaps the very best thing about Pullman is the extensive and exquisite breakfast. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from Jorge Chavez International Airport, so you'll be there in no time.
2. Selina Miraflores Lima
We always enjoy staying overnight at the hotels of the Selina hotel chain, including the colorful version of Selina in Miraflores in Lima. You can stay there in dorms as well as in private rooms and again the rooms are fully equipped. There are also daily activities organized at Selina. Compared to Pullman, this hotel is a lot cheaper, between €35.00 and €100.00 per night for a private room (in 2024). In some cases, though, this is with a shared bathroom. The hotel is very centrally located in Miraflores and a 15-minute walk from the beach.
Local gastronomy: these restaurants in Miraflores are the place to be
With two restaurants in the top 10 of "The World's 50 Best Restaurants," Lima is among the top destinations in the world of gastronomy. These restaurants - Central and Maido - are both located in Miraflores. So it's safe to say that this is the neighborhood to be in for culinary delights. Of course, these restaurants come with a certain price tag, but even if you don't want to pay top dollar, many places in Miraflores offer surprising taste explosions.
1. Central
One of the most extraordinary restaurants in Lima is Central. We unfortunately did not eat here, but the stories and images are raving! The dishes of Central represent the beautiful country of Peru with its diverse ingredients, landscapes, cultures, traditions and history. You can make reservations at Central for various "Experiences," and prices start at 1,480 Peruvian sol per person, which is about €360.00 (2024).
2. Maido restaurant
The second restaurant in the top 10 is Maido. We ate at this restaurant and we still talk about how good this hotspot was! Maido serves a mix between Peruvian and Japanese cuisine and the dishes they serve here are called Nikkei. This is a specialty of the local cuisine and is basically a kind of Peruvian sushi.
We found it to be a true flavor explosion with flavors unknown to us but surprising. Actually everything got a rating of 10 from us: the service and service, the dishes and cocktails, the presentation of the dishes... An evening at Maido is a true experience! The Nikkei Experience costs 899 Peruvian sol for 11 courses, which works out to about €220.00 (in 2024). So just like Central, Maido also requires deep pockets, but it is well worth it if you are a foodie!
3. Al Toke Pez
Just outside Miraflores, in the Surquillo neighborhood, you'll find Al Toke Pez. For a filling, tasty and incredibly inexpensive ceviche meal, this is the place to be. Chef Toshi Matsufuji (son of the famous Japanese-Peruvian chef Darío Matsufuji) bases his chalkboard menu on the fish he finds at the market that day. For just 20 Peruvian sol, you can order a combo meal here. The restaurant is known from Netflix's Street Food series. You can only takeout at Al Toke Pez. Don't expect a fancy restaurant, but do expect delicious Peruvian food.
Peru: a surprising country full of stunning highlights
Peru is a magnificent country full of highlights. It is perhaps one of the most diverse countries we have ever visited. We traveled through the south of Peru and in our articles we share all our tips!
From the impressive Machu Picchu, which takes you back to the heyday of the Incas, to the fertile Sacred Valley, where you'll discover traditional villages and archaeological wonders. The city Cusco, with its colonial charm and rich history, should not be missing from your itinerary, of course. And don't forget Arequipa not, the beautiful "White City" surrounded by volcanoes, which also provides access to the breathtaking Colca Canyon.
Peru is a country that continues to surprise with its unique blend of nature, culture and history. Be inspired and discover the versatility of this special country!
