You may not be able to spot lion or rhino in Veluwezoom National Park, but you can certainly see the Big Five there. But which Big Five are we talking about? The Veluwe Big Five may not sound as interesting as the African Big Five, but we will prove you wrong. Just like in Africa spot the Big Five here on the vast plains of a beautiful national park. In terms of landscape, it also seems similar. And the size of the animals, they don't differ too much from each other either. This is the Big Five of the Veluwe!
1. The red deer
The first of the Big Five you can spot on the Veluwe is the red deer. This is the largest wild animal in the Netherlands. You have the best chance of spotting a red deer during sunrise or sunset. In the summer months red deer have a reddish-brownish color while in the winter months they are a bit more gray in color. Of course, you can also recognize a red deer by the large antlers on top of their head. The antlers can weigh up to 15 pounds and are used by red deer to impress conspecifics.
2. The Scottish highlander
As the name suggests, this breed originally comes from the Scottish Highlands. The Scottish Highlander is common in the Dutch landscapes and is therefore fairly easy to spot. In general, these animals have a quiet character and are not shy, but if you get too close they will disappear into the woods. Now that we have seen them several times in the Netherlands, it is on our bucket list to see them in the real Scottish Highlands!
3. The wild boar
Every year during the autumn vacations we stay in a beautiful nature cottage in the middle of the Veluwezoom National Park. Where some people rarely spot wild boars in the Veluwe, we actually see them every year. Especially towards the end of the day when it gets dusk. Then they scurry past the cottage in search of food. Wild boars are omnivores. So they root in the earth in search of insects, mice, rabbits, roots, tubers, grass and much more. The best thing about wild boars is that they live in groups, so if you see one wild boar, more are sure to follow.
4. The fox
A common animal on the Veluwe that rarely shows itself is the fox. They live mainly at dusk and during the night. Should you observe a fox, it will undoubtedly be in a wooded area or near wooded banks. Look for an animal the size of a big cat, red-colored with white highlights. Who knows, you might get lucky!
5. The roe deer
You can spot roe deer anywhere in the Netherlands, but you see them mainly on open plains between wooded areas. What is special about these animals is that they have a vision of 300(!) degrees, which is simply almost all the way around. In addition, deer can smell you from just a few hundred meters away. It is therefore exceptional that you will see a roe deer at very close range. A roe deer can also have antlers, but unlike a red deer, these are not used to impress. However, they do use them to mark their territory by scratching the bark off trees. See a roe deer with a calf? If so, it may still look like Bambi, so cute!
