What to do in Ras al-Khaimah?
Azure sea water, red deserts and golden mountain peaks, as well as the majestic Arabian oryx and the lost pearl industry. This is Ras al-Khaimah, the natural Emirate of the United Arab Emirates. A place for nature lovers and adventurers, but also the place for those who love a touch of luxury. These are our must-do's for an unforgettable trip to this nature-rich emirate!
1. Explore Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the United Arab Emirates
The mountains in Ras al-Khaimah make the emirate unique and an adventurous destination. So our first tip to do in Ras al-Khaimah is to explore the impressive Hadjar Mountains. The mountain range is millions of years old and stretches from Ras al-Khaimah deep into Oman.
The highest point here is the mountaintop Jebel Jais at 1,934 meters, which is also the highest mountain in the emirate as well as any other emirate. The area is known for its breathtaking panoramas, deep gorges and some crazy activities. Like the longest zipline in the world. Yes, that too took us by surprise. Nevertheless, we were not deterred and braved the 2.83 km long zipline. With shaky legs, but what a boost of endorphins afterwards! Is the zipline a little too crazy for you? Then consider a ride on the toboggan run where you'll cover a course of about 1,900 meters at 40 mph. Along the way, you'll feast your eyes.
But not only that, Jebel Jais is also the perfect place to enjoy serene nature, cool mountain air and an unforgettable sunset. Pull up a chair at restaurant 1484 by Puro for lunch or book an adventurous overnight stay at Camp 1770. More tips and information on what to do around Jebel Jais? 2. A special safari experience in the Al Wadi Nature Reserve
Red sand dunes are typical of the emirates, but what makes the desert in Ras al-Khaimah so special to visit? The Al Wadi Nature Reserve is a stunning nature reserve in Ras al-Khaimah located in the vast desert of this emirate. This reserve, which is part of The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert Resort, is a haven for wildlife such as the Arabian oryx, the dromedary and the gazelle. As a visitor to the Al Wadi Nature Reserve, you have the chance to experience the authentic desert landscape here in a unique way.
"How then?" You may be wondering. That has to do with the fact that you can sleep in exceptionally nice accommodations at the resort here as well as the fact that the Al Wadi Nature Reserve is a protected area committed to sustainable tourism. A safari through the area is a great way to see the animals in their natural habitat.
Luxury overnight stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Al Wadi Desert
That the Al Wadi Nature Reserve is part of The Ritz-Carlton makes you find beautiful accommodations to stay here in the middle of the reserve. No lack of luxury, shall we say. The accommodations, also called villas, are all equipped with a private pool from which you have a beautiful view over the vast desert. So don't be surprised if you see gazelles walking by when you take an early morning dip. Your own villa in the middle of the desert is the perfect place to unwind after a day full of activities.
3. Visit the Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village.
The way to truly experience and learn about a destination is to dive into its history, and there is no better place to do that in Ras al-Khaimah than while visiting the Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village. This authentic fishing village, which lived mainly from the proceeds of pearl fishing, gives a good idea of what life was like in Ras al-Khaimah before the industry collapsed and oil was found in the Emirates. The fishing village consists of some 500 houses, some of which have been restored to give you an idea of what it used to look like. The houses are made of a mix of coral rock and mud, and if you look closely at the houses you can also see the relief and texture of coral reflected in the walls. It is the historic home of the Za'ab tribe and of significant value as a cultural heritage of the United Arab Emirates. Take a stroll through the maze of streets and take in all the impressions.
The AL Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village is free to enter.
4. Visit the Suwaidi Pearl Farm and delve into the history of Ras al-Khaimah
Want to learn more about the pearl industry that once made Ras al-Khaimah thrive? Then a visit to Suwaidi Pearl Farm an interesting tip. Here you'll dive deeper into the history about pearl diving, the harsh conditions and the associated risks, but also learn more about today's pearl farming.
The Persian Gulf was one of the most famous waters where pearls were dived. A job that passed from generation to generation. Nowadays you are only allowed to dive when you have obtained a certificate for it, but in the 18th century conditions were very different. With a "peg" on your nose, a stone at your foot and a net around your neck, you descended to a depth of about 27 meters. A dive lasted an average of 2 to 5 minutes and the diver did about 50 to 200 dives a day. Unprecedented and at enormous risk.
The Suwaidi Pearl Farm is the only traditional pearl farm in the United Arab Emirates, so you can visit it. From the mainland, you sail across the lagoon to the floating platform where the pearl farm takes place. You get a guided tour with information and see for yourself how a pearl is extracted from an oyster. Nowadays, cultured pearls are mostly sold. The price of a pearl as it is extracted from the oyster here starts from 450 AED, which is about 115 EUR.
A visit to the Suwaidi Pearl Farm costs AED 250 per person, which is about EUR 65 per person. Duration of the tour is 2.5 hours.
5. Climb to the top of the Dhayah Fort
If you visit the city of Ras al-Khaimah then you can perfectly combine the Dhayah Fort, Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village, the Suwaidi Pearl Farm and even the RAK National Museum. A day of culture sniffing!
The Dhayah Fort is the only fort in the United Arab Emirates that is still intact and thus of historical value. Dating back to the 16th century, the fort served as a defensive point and provides a small glimpse into traditional desert agriculture. The walls are made of clay and brick, a combination that works well against the heat of the sun. Although the fort itself is small and there is little to do, it is a beautiful place with fantastic views of the rugged Hadji Mountains, the city and the sea.
Be sure to bring a bottle of water, as the climb up can be quite tough in the sun. By the way, entrance is free.
6. Admire Ras al-Khaimah's coastline from the air
Traveling abroad is an experience in itself, but even locally I am always on the lookout for an activity that enriches my experience. And an absolutely special experience in Ras al-Khaimah was taking a flight over the emirate's coastline. After all, from the air you really see how vast, arid and yet also colorful the area is. You get a good perspective of what is where, what is under construction and where you have and haven't been yet. I especially feasted my eyes as we flew above the lagoon. The various shades of blue and green stand out incredibly nicely from the brown and yellow beaches. If you pay attention here, you even have a chance of spotting a sea turtle!
A flight with Jazirah Aviation Club across the coastline takes about 20 minutes and costs AED 500 per person, or about EUR 130. A reservation in advance is recommended, especially on weekends.
How do you travel to Ras al-Khaimah?
The fastest and most efficient way to travel to Ras al-Khaimah is to fly into Dubai. From Amsterdam, several airlines, including Emirates and KLM, fly direct flights to Dubai. The flight time is about 6 to 7 hours. Once at the Dubai airport, it takes about 45 to 60 minutes of driving to get to Ras al-Khaimah, depending, of course, on exactly where you need to be.
You can also fly into Ras al-Khaimah airport, but since the airlines that fly here (including Qatar Airlines) do not have direct service to Amsterdam, you will probably have to transfer to Doha or Abu Dhabi.
