Dreaming of an adventurous road trip through Scotland? Then get inspired by this 2-week itinerary in which you will discover the most beautiful places of the country. Scotland is a country with rugged landscapes, fairytale castles, historic cities and charming villages. During this round trip you will pass by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, the magical Isle of Skye and the historic capital Edinburgh. In this article we share the ultimate itinerary through Scotland, complete with tips for sightseeing, activities and fine accommodations!

Round trip Scotland day 1-2: Edinburgh

Start your Scotland adventure in the capital city of Edinburgh. This city breathes history and offers plenty of stunning sights. Start your day with a visit to Edinburgh Castle, situated on a volcanic rock overlooking the city. Then stroll along the Royal Mile, where you will find numerous stores, pubs and historic buildings. Here you really immerse yourself in the local life of the 'Edinburghers'. And of course take a look at one of the whisky distilleries, because when you say Scotland, you naturally say Scotch whisky.

On day two you can climb Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano that offers panoramic views of Edinburgh. In the late afternoon, head to the Grassmarket district, as it is bustling and bursting with cozy pubs. Near the Grassmarket you will find Victoria Street. This is without a doubt one of the most photographed streets in Edinburgh. The colorful, historic buildings are a picture to behold. But what the street is really known for is Harry Potter. In fact, the streetscape of Victoria Street was one of the biggest sources of inspiration for J.K. Rowling and the idea of Harry Potter was born here!

What is the nicest place to stay in Edinburgh?

There are several nice neighborhoods to stay in Edinburgh. If you want to stay in the historic heart of the city, choose accommodation in The Old Town. Other nice neighborhoods include Leith, Stockbridge, Morningside and Bruntsfield. We stayed at the Bruntsfield Hotel in the neighborhood of the same name. A very nice hotel with spacious rooms and pleasant beds. Around the hotel you will find many local boutiques, hip coffee shops and parks with lots of greenery.

Round trip Scotland days 3-4: Stirling and Loch Lomond

On day three, travel toward the historic town of Stirling. Visit the imposing Stirling Castle and learn about the famous battle of Bannockburn. From the castle walls you'll have stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

After Stirling, continue your route to Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest lake. Here you can walk along the lake, take a boat trip or kayak. In the evening you can enjoy the tranquility and nature in one of the charming villages around the lake.

Nice accommodations near Loch Lomond

A nice village to stay around Lake Loch Lomond is Balloch. Balloch is often called the gateway to the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. We stayed during our road trip through Scotland at Gowanlea Guest House in Balloch, a cozy, affordable and typically Scottish accommodation that I would definitely recommend!

Round trip Scotland day 5-6: Oban and Glencoe

On your way to the west coast, make a stop in the fishing town of Oban, the gateway to the Scottish Islands. Here, sample the local whiskey at the Oban Distillery and enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants.

Next, travel to Glencoe, one of Scotland's most impressive valleys. The rugged mountains and deep valleys make this the ideal destination for nature lovers. Take a walk through the valley and feast your eyes on the dramatic landscapes made famous by many movies.

What is the nicest place to stay in Glencoe?

Nice accommodations in Glencoe are Isles of Glencoe Hotel, which is located on the waterfront overlooking the mountains, and Glencoe House: a luxurious, historic accommodation with beautiful gardens. The last option is especially a topper if you are traveling through Scotland with a group. It is, in fact, a vacation home for 6 people.

Round trip Scotland days 7-9: Isle of Skye

After Glencoe, it's time to travel on to the magical Isle of Skye. You may have heard of this name before, as Isle of Ske is known for its fairytale landscapes, such as the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr. You can do some insanely beautiful hiking here, such as to the Fairy Pools and Fairy Glen.

Visit Dunvegan Castle, Scotland's oldest inhabited castle, and enjoy Skye's impressive cliffs and beaches. Also, don't forget to stop in Portree. With its colorful cottages on the harbor, the town could be right on a postcard!

The best accommodations on Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye is so beautiful that I recommend spending at least two nights here. The best base on Skye is the town of Portree, with its picturesque harbor area. We stay here at the B&B Rockview, where we were received incredibly warmly and immediately felt welcome.

Round trip Scotland day 10-11: Inverness and Loch Ness

After your days on Isle of Skye, continue your journey toward Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Visit Inverness Castle and stroll through the historic city center. Also take a trip to the famous Loch Ness, where you might catch a glimpse of the mythical monster Nessie.

Near Loch Ness, you can visit the impressive Urquhart Castle, located on the shores of the lake. End the day with a scenic walk along the Great Glen Way.

Cozy accommodations in Inverness

Nice accommodations can be found all over Scotland, and especially in terms of B&Bs, the selection is large. For example, you'll find plenty of cozy cottages and renovated townhouses, where the B&B owners are ready and waiting for you for a wonderful stay. There are also many cozy and fine options in Inverness. Favorites with me are Doric House, Ballifeary House and The Castle B&B.

Round trip Scotland day 12-13: Cairngorms National Park

On day 12 you will travel on to Cairngorms National Park, the largest national park in the United Kingdom. This park is best known for its many fun outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling and wildlife spotting. Visit the Highland Wildlife Park or take a ride on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway for panoramic mountain views.

Nice accommodations in Cairngorms National Park

There is a wide range of accommodation available in and around the Cairngorms National Park. The park is rich in villages and small towns, where you will find fine B&Bs and hotels, as well as cottages, campsites and hostels. Beautiful and well-reviewed accommodations to stay are Ivy Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Braemar and Cairngorm Lodge in Aviemore.

Day 14: Return to Edinburgh

On the last day of your tour, you return to Edinburgh. Along the way, you can stop in the charming town of Pitlochry, where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The town is also known for local whisky distillery Edradour Distillery, Scotland's smallest distillery. Unfortunately, Edradour closed in 2024 due to underutilization. End your road trip with a final night in Edinburgh and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the city's many restaurants.

Tip: Restaurant Fazenda. Not typically Scottish, but incredibly good!

Take a road trip through Scotland by (rental) car

Scotland is a crazy destination for a road trip. You'll drive past magical lakes, through rugged highlands and past the most beautiful ancient cities. Book a flight to Edinburgh and your adventure can begin! For renting a car, I recommend Sunnycars to, a reliable rental company offering all-inclusive car rentals. With a car, you can travel flexibly and enjoy the beautiful Scottish landscapes to the fullest.

Do you prefer to go to Scotland with your own car? Then there are several ways to travel to Scotland. You can choose from the following options:

  • DFDS Seaways' 16-hour overnight ferry from IJmuiden to Newcastle. Then drive to Scotland in about 1.5 hours.

  • P&O Ferries' 10-hour night boat from Rotterdam to Hull. Then drive to Scotland in about 4 hours.

  • The 6.5-hour boat trip from Hook of Holland to Harwich with Stena Line. From Harwich it is still at least a 6-hour drive to Scotland.

More interesting places to add to your itinerary through Scotland
