A vacation to Scotland had been on our bucket list for a while. More and more often we saw the enchanting medieval streets of Edinburgh popping up on Instagram. And the overwhelming landscapes in the Scottish Highlands also beckoned more every day. So at the beginning of this year, we (finally!) booked a trip to Scotland. And, as expected, we instantly fell in love with the rugged, expansive nature. But beyond the vast landscapes, there are many more reasons why Scotland is worth visiting. We give five of them. And we guarantee you, after reading, you'll want to pack your bags today!
1. The incomparable nature in Scotland
High mountains, shimmering lochs, dense forests and an endless coastline: Scotland possesses unparalleled beauty. Therefore, nature is one of the main reasons to travel to Scotland. The diverse landscapes of the Scottish Highlands are breathtaking. The places that left the most impression with us were Loch Ness, Fairy Glen and Fairy Pools (but really all of Isle of Skye), Loch Lomond and, of course, the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct.
But also during a city break Edinburgh you can take in a natural highlight. Climb Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano with a height of 251 meters. If you make the climb to the top, you'll be treated to stunning 360-degree views of the city.
With so many amazing natural areas, Scotland is the ideal country to explore on a road trip. In the pristine countryside, you can sometimes drive for hours without meeting anyone. Do you have longer to spare? Then consider a motorhome tour of Scotland.Â
2. Scotland's rich history
A vacation to Scotland feels like a trip through time. Throughout the country you will find castles and monuments reminiscent of the past. They are the remnants of a glorious past, when an independent Scotland tried to hold its own against its powerful neighbor England.
Today, much of this history is still visible. With some 3,000 castles, Scotland offers a godsend for enthusiasts. One of the most famous is Edinburgh Castle, but we also found Eilean Donan and the ruins of the 13-century Urquhart Castle impressive to visit.
In the city of Edinburgh, you completely imagine yourself in an ancient fairy tale. The entire inner city looks medieval and just when you think it can't get any more beautiful, you end up in another beautiful side street. Both the old and new center of Edinburgh are therefore on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The following streets and sights in Edinburgh are well worth exploring: The Royal Mile, The Grassmarket, Victoria Street and Dean Village.
3. The interesting culture of the Scots
When you say Scotland, you quickly think of its distinctive traditions. Whisky, bagpipes and plaid kilts: they are all characteristic of Scotland's image. Over a typical Scottish dinner, you immediately experience what makes the country so special. When the national dish, haggis, is served while listening to Scottish Gaelic songs in the background, you know that traditions are highly valued here. Indeed, few peoples are as proud of their roots as the Scots.
During your trip to Scotland, be sure to try haggis! It is a typical Scottish dish already eaten by the ancient Celts. It is a kind of savory pudding made of sheep's stomach filled with bits of organ meat, chopped onion and oatmeal. You'll hate it or love it, but a vacation to Scotland is not complete without having tasted it.
4. The hospitable and friendly people
If we had to describe Scotland, it would be warm. And we're not talking about the climate, but the sympathetic and sincere locals. Scots are generally very friendly people. They are only too happy to show you the way and have a chat with you in a local pub. The hospitality of the Scots makes a visit to the country even more special.
5. Endless adventure in Scotland
Despite its rainy climate, Scotland is a true outdoor destination. There are plenty of adventurous hiking trails, as well as kayaking and wild swimming. Going to Scotland in the summer? Then the Royal Highland Games are a real experience. You take a thrilling ride in a Land Rover through the hills of Loch Tay on a mountain safari. And how about the destination of Orkney? This is one of the busiest flyways for migrating birds. In addition to puffins and other rare birds, you can spot sperm whales, whales and dolphins here.
Just in case the weather isn't at all cooperative when you're in Scotland, there's also plenty of adventure to be found indoors. For example, take a look at a whiskey distillery. One of the nicest is Edradour Distillery, Scotland's smallest distillery. But a tasting at The Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh is also a real treat.
