Then you want to have been in Nerja! From idyllic beaches to cozy streets and breathtaking views: these are the best places, most beautiful sights and tips for visiting Nerja.
What makes the town of Nerja in Spain so special?
Nerja is a charming coastal town on the Costa del Sol in Spain. It is located in the province of Málaga and the autonomous region of Andalusia, some 50 kilometers east of the city of Málaga. The town of Nerja is known for its beautiful beaches, charming streets and the impressive Balcón de Europa. There is a very relaxed atmosphere and Nerja offers everything you are looking for in a wonderful vacation: sun, culture, history, good food and impressive nature.
The most beautiful sights in Nerja
During my visit to Nerja, I actually mostly wandered the streets a lot. After all, sometimes it's so nice to explore a town without a plan. But do you want to make sure you don't miss the most important and beautiful sights in Nerja? Then these are my personal tips!
1. Balcón de Europa
The Balcón de Europa is perhaps Nerja's most famous viewpoint. Here you have a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the place in Nerja for a beautiful vacation snapshot and for watching a romantic sunset. You probably won't be surprised that many couples come here to capture their wedding day in pictures.
2. The old center of Nerja
The old town of Nerja is a charming area full of culture and history. You really experience the typical Andalusian atmosphere here. Wander the narrow, winding streets full of whitewashed houses and discover unique boutiques and authentic Spanish bars. Also be sure to stop to score a tasty ice cream, for example at Heladería La Ibense. After all, it's vacation time!
3. Plaza de los Cangrejos
The Plaza de los Cangrejos is the bustling heart of Nerja, full of cozy terraces and restaurants. It is a large square, adjacent to Avenida Castilla Perez and you overlook the Torrecilla beach here. Enjoy the very best tapas and a refreshing drink here while soaking up Nerja's local atmosphere.
Where's the best place to eat in the Plaza de los Cangrejos? Go to Mirasol for simple but tasty Spanish dishes. Prefer Italian? Then Vitaliano da Cristina comes highly recommended with tasty pizzas and homemade fresh pasta.
4. Insane vantage points in Nerja
Did you know that you can find some insanely beautiful viewpoints in Nerja? The Balcón de Europa is of course one of them, but be sure to hike to the following spots as well:
Mirador de Carabeo: eand charming balcony on Calle Hernando de Carabeo with stunning views of Playa Carabeo and the azure sea.
Mirador del Bendito: located at the end of Calle Hernando de Carabeo. Enjoy an insane view of Playa Burriana and Carabeillo Beach.
El Salón Beach Viewpoint: a cozy viewpoint on Calle Tajillo, near the Church of El Salvador, overlooking Playa El Salón.
Torrecilla Urban Viewpoint: eand viewpoint with remnants of the old watchtower "La Torrecilla," surrounded by spectacular views of Playa La Torrecilla and Playa El Chucho.
The best beaches in Nerja
Nerja is known for its beautiful beaches, from lively and popular ones to hidden coves. These are the finest beaches in Nerja to visit.
1. Playa Burriana
Playa Burriana is Nerja's most popular sandy beach, with cozy beach bars, water sports facilities and a relaxed atmosphere. It is located in a sheltered bay, making the sea calm and it is also a nice place with children. You can rent beds and umbrellas for a fee. Keep in mind that it is crowded!
2. Playa Torrecilla
A family-friendly beach with calm waters, cozy beach bars and a nice promenade to stroll along. The beach is about 300 meters long and consists mainly of dark sand and small pebbles. It is popular mainly because of its location (easy access). In the summer months, this can make Playa Torrecilla very crowded. You can also rent beach beds here!
3. Playa El Salon
El Salon is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Nerja. It is a charming beach near the center, surrounded by a backdrop of rocks, cliffs and picturesque houses. This small sandy beach is located just a little west of the Balcón de Europa. The old fisherman's house on the beach provides an exceptionally beautiful backdrop.
4. Playa Carabeillo
On this small, picturesque beach, which is surrounded by lush vegetation, you will feel as if you are on a tropical island. Ideal for when you want to leave the busier beaches behind and are looking for a quieter spot with a beautiful view. The reason it is quieter? Because you can only reach it on foot via some very steep stairs. There are few facilities on the beach itself, but this, if you ask me, only adds to the charm of Playa Carabeillo!
5. Playa Calahonda
Playa Calahonda, this beach in Nerja is almost impossible to miss. You will find this beach right next to Balcón de Europa, making it without a doubt the most photographed beach in Nerja. The cove is surrounded by rocks and colorful fishermen's houses.
The best places to stay in Nerja
There are several nice accommodations to stay in Nerja. Highly recommended is the MB Boutique Hotel (Adults Recommended), which is on 200 meters from Playa de la Torrecilla beach. There is a lovely relaxing rooftop terrace with Balinese beds and 2 large hot tubs, where music and snacks are available. Another fine and centrally located accommodation in Nerja is HC Calahonda Beach Nerja. It is located a few minutes' walk from Calahonda beach and Caletilla beach and Playa El Salón. Beautiful places and sights just outside Nerja
During my visit to Nerja, I did not go outside the town, but I was told that there are some impressive sights outside the town as well. Especially if you have a (rental) car in Nerja features, it is worth exploring the region more.
For example, just outside Nerja you will find the Acueducto del Águila. This structure from the 19th century is a hidden gem not to be missed. Also for Cueva de Nerja you have to be a little outside the city. You will find this spectacular cave system 3 km north of the city of Nerja, on the outskirts of the picturesque white village of Maro. Behold the ancient petroglyphs and giant stalactites and stalagmites. A must-visit for lovers of history and nature!
In the village of Maro, you will also find two beautiful viewpoints on the rugged cliffs: Mirador de la Plaza Iglesia and the Maro Natural Viewpoint.
Combine your visit to Nerja with a fine vacation on the Costa del Sol
Nerja is the ideal base to discover more of the Costa del Sol.
