These are our favorite tips for this beautiful and unique peninsula!
Railay peninsula in Thailand
Railay can be found in the south of Thailand, near the city and in the province of the same name, Krabi. The peninsula lies on the beautiful coast of the Andaman Sea, known for its stunning turquoise waters, colorful coral reefs, and rich marine life. Railay is part of mainland Thailand, but because it is surrounded by giant limestone cliffs, the peninsula is only accessible by boat. This gives you the ultimate island feeling when you are on Railay. There are four main beaches, Railay West, Railay East, Phra Nang Beach and Tonsai Beach. These are all connected by footpaths, making Railay completely car-free and easily passable on foot!
Tips to do on Railay
The moment you approach Railay by longtail boat is the moment you don't know where to look. This is because everywhere you look you see beautiful limestone rocks that have formed insanely around the golden sandy beaches of the peninsula. Not to mention the turquoise color of the sea water. Railay is a picture, a feast for the eyes. These are our tips to do on Railay in Thailand!
1. Enjoy a beach day at Railay Beach West
The most popular beach on Railay is Railay Beach West, also known as Railay Beach. This beach shows off on many postcards of Thailand and is obviously a picture to behold. The bay is surrounded by insane limestone cliffs. The beach itself is also a picture. Huge expanse with a long and wide white sandy beach, which is also surrounded by swaying palm trees. A tropical and paradisiacal place.Â
But while the beach is beautiful, remember that this is also where many longtail boats dock and from where ferries leave for the surrounding islands. The beach is almost always crowded. A number of restaurants and hotels are located on the beach, which are nice to visit but come with a price tag.Â
All in all, it is a wonderful place to spend a day at the beach, and in the evening it is also a very nice place to eat on the beach.
2. Climb and scramble to the East Railay Viewpoint and the lagoon
For us, no vacation is complete without a little physical challenge, so on Railay, the climb to East Railay Viewpoint was and challenge we took on. The climb is not recommended because it can be slippery and on-site assistance options are limited. So keep this in mind and don't do anything crazy.Â
The climb to the viewpoint is best done in the morning to get ahead of the crowds and avoid the hottest time of day. You'll be sweating like an otter, but once at the viewpoint, you'll have a beautiful view of Thailand's Railay Peninsula.Â
You can climb and scramble even further to the lagoon further down. A beautiful place to see. Have you seen both spots? Then it's time to head back. Once back on the main trail, you can hike on to Phra Nang Beach to take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear sea.
3. Go snorkeling at the cliffs of Phra Nang Beach
Railay Beach is a beautiful beach, but if I really had to give you a tip for Railay it would be Phra Nang Beach. The cliffs that run from the beach into the sea are climbed daily by adventurous climbers. You'll see them dangling upside down from the rocks, as will the monkeys who, by the way, roam the beach here a lot. Do not feed the monkeys here and store food well in your bag.
You can rent kayaks on this beach, which is a nice tip. In fact, a huge rocky outcrop rises out of the sea off the coast. You can kayak around this.
On the left side of the beach you will find two caves completely filled with wooden dicks. A very crazy thing to behold.Â
The beach is narrow, but long and framed by a beautiful mangrove forest. By the way, it is also the best beach on Railay to watch the sunset.Â
4. Dine out at one of the restaurants on Railay Walking Street
In the evenings, the peninsula comes alive when everyone looks for a restaurant on Railay Walking Street. You will find many diverse restaurants and there is actually something for everyone. It's crowded, but cozy. And especially in high season, it is advisable to reserve a table at the well-known restaurants.
5. Book an overnight stay at one of our favorite hotels on Railay
We will always recommend that you spend at least one night on Railay. In fact, there are some travelers who come up and down by longtail boat for a day, but then you miss out on all the atmosphere of the island. Bummer! Because when you are there, you want to make the most of it, right? Being able to relax and enjoy a day at the beach, an adventurous climb to the viewpoint and many more experiences.
The selection of good accommodations on Railay is fairly limited, so it is very wise to book your stay in time. Our favorite accommodations? Those are the resorts below, from affordable to luxurious:
Rapala Rock Wood Resort - the ideal budget option where you stay in a simple bungalow;Â
Railay Village Resort - A beautiful resort with pool on Railay West;
Rayavadee - a luxury resort with pool and comfortable lodges.
The best period to visit Railay in Thailand
Railay has a tropical climate so you can count on high temperatures (between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius) and lots of sunshine all year round. Of course, this is exactly what you are looking for when traveling to a beach destination like Railay. You'll be amazed at how green the island is. This is partly due to the rain that falls during the rainy season, which is from May to October. But don't let the rainy season stop you from going to Railay. Although the humidity is higher, the rainstorms are often short and don't fall until late afternoon. Plenty of time to spend on the beach!
Still, the best travel time to visit Railay is from November to March. You will still avoid the rainy season and the weather is ideal for climbing, kayaking, hiking and enjoying scrumptious beach days.
Transportation to Railay: how to get there
Railay Peninsula is accessible only by boat, as it is surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. Most travelers leave from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. From Ao Nang it's a short longtail boat ride of about 10 minutes, while from Krabi Town it takes 30 to 45 minutes. Tickets are easily purchased at the pier or through your accommodation.
Note: At low tide, you may have to walk a bit through the water to reach the boat, so wear sandals or flip-flops.Â
