Koh Tao, also known as Turtle Island, is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand known for its breathtaking dive sites and laid-back back backpacker vibe. Despite some controversies in the past, Koh Tao is the place in Thailand to explore the stunning underwater world. But even if you don't plan to dive, there is a lot to see and explore on this island. These are all my tips and the best things to do on Koh Tao in Thailand!
The island of Koh Tao in Thailand
Koh Tao is a small tropical island near Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in Thailand. Yet the island is totally different from the other two. Here it is not about the nightlife as on Koh Phangan and it is also not as luxurious as on Koh Samui. No, here it's all about underwater life. In fact, the island is surrounded by vast stretches of colorful coral and is particularly famous for its amazing reefs and diversity of marine life.
A visit to the island is therefore often combined with other places in Thailand. For example as a conclusion of a beautiful tour of Thailand.
What to do on Koh Tao: the best tips, sights and activities
One of the first questions you probably ask yourself is: what to do on Koh Tao? The answer is simple: scuba diving, snorkeling and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. The island is hilly and dotted with coconut trees. You'll find a handful of small villages, but that's basically it. However, that is not to say that you will be bored on the island. On the contrary, these are my tips for the best activities and sights on Koh Tao!
1. Explore the rich underwater world on the coast of Koh Tao
As mentioned, Koh Tao is the diving paradise of Thailand. The coastline is surrounded by tropical coral reefs where you can spot beautiful fish, turtles, rays and sometimes even whale sharks. Koh Tao is therefore one of the most popular places in the world to get your diving license. Did you know that more than 40 diving schools can be found here? The ideal place to get your PADI.
Don't want to dive, but are curious about the underwater world? Then you can book a snorkeling trip with one of the many providers on the island. By the way, the coral often starts just a few meters off shore, so even without an organized tour you have a chance to spot tropical fish.
For the adventurous snorkelers, Shark Bay is a must-visit. As the name suggests, here you can swim with reef sharks. It's an unforgettable experience! And don't worry, the sharks are not dangerous.
2. Find conviviality in Mae Haad Bay.
The busiest and most visited part of Koh Tao is Mae Haad Bay, where most ferries arrive. Here you will find numerous restaurants, bars, diving schools and boutiques. To me, Mae Haad felt like the heart of the island. I remember well an evening with live music in a small beach bar, where locals and tourists gathered to enjoy the cozy atmosphere of Koh Tao.
3. Take a longtail boat to Koh Nang Yuan
Sailing on a longtail boat in Thailand is actually an experience in itself, but going to Koh Nang Yuan is totally a treat. You'll find this exotic islet just off the coast of Koh Tao. There is a beautiful sandy beach from where you can swim and snorkel in the clear blue sea water. On the island you will find only one resort, the Nangyuan Island Dive Resort, which, by the way, is an incredibly beautiful place for a unique overnight stay. A longtail boat will take you from Koh Tao to Koh Nang Yuan and vice versa in about 20 minutes.
Tip: also great fun is to rent a (private) longtail boat with captain for a day. Among other things, visit Koh Nang Yuan and the most beautiful snorkeling spots, but at your own pace and without crowds of tourists around you.
4. Enjoy the sunset at Mango Viewpoint
For the best sunset on the island, be sure to head to Mango Viewpoint. The climb up can be tough, but the view is absolutely worth it. I saw one of the most beautiful sunsets ever here, overlooking Koh Tao's coastline.
5. Hike to John-Suwan Viewpoint.
Another wonderful spot for a panoramic view of the island. The hike to the John-Suwan Viewpoint takes about 30 minutes, but the view is breathtaking.
Koh Tao's most beautiful and finest beaches
Koh Tao has some stunning beaches that range from lively spots to hidden paradises ideal for relaxing and snorkeling.
1. Sairee Beach
Sairee Beach is the island's most popular beach and the center of nightlife. You can relax on the beach here during the day, while enjoying the lively nightlife at night. The fire shows held here are spectacular!
2. Aow Fun
If, like me, you like a bit more peace and quiet, I recommend going to Aow Leuk during the day. This beach is quieter and ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. The water is clear and offers great snorkeling, making it a fine beach for families with children as well.
3. Mango Bay
Personally, I really recommend Mango Bay, an insane snorkeling spot where you can see the coral almost under your feet. Mango Bay is a bit more difficult to reach, but that's what makes it such a beautiful place. The best way to get to Mango Bay is by longtail boat, for example on a private boat tour. Would you like something more adventurous? Then you can also take a challenging hike through the jungle.
4. Sai Nuan Beach
Sai Nuan Beach is a hidden gem and ideal for those who want to avoid the crowds. It is a small, secluded beach with a serene atmosphere and few tourists. The surroundings are beautiful and you can do some great snorkeling and simply enjoy the tranquility here. Don't forget to bring a good book for a relaxing day.
5. Freedom Beach
Freedom Beach offers the best of both worlds: you can both relax and take action! The water is crystal clear, making it a crazy place for snorkeling. And the white sandy beach? That undoubtedly invites you to sunbathe. Moreover, it is close to John-Suwan Viewpoint. For example, make the hike to the viewpoint in the morning, and then relax on the beach at Freedom Beach.
How do I get to Koh Tao?
The most common ways to travel to Koh Tao is from Bangkok, Surat Thai or Koh Phangan. You reach the island via a combination of different modes of transportation. From Bangkok, for example, you can take a domestic flight to Surat Thani and from there take a ferry to Koh Tao. There are several companies offering daily ferries. Check out the list of options at 12go. You can also fly to Koh Samui and then by ferry to Koh Tao.
What is the best travel time for Koh Tao?
The best time to visit Koh Tao is between February and April. The weather is lovely then and it is also very pleasant, as it is high season then. The sea is calmest and underwater visibility is optimal. Avoid the rainy season, as it may disrupt your diving and snorkeling plans.
Accommodation tips: the best places to stay on Koh Tao
For an authentic experience on Koh Tao, opt for a beachfront bungalow, such as the accommodations at the beautiful boutique hotel Lücke Boutique Hotel, a 5-minute walk from lively Mae Haad. Another beautiful resort here is the Sensi Paradise Beach Resort.
Want to be close to the popular Sairee Beach but stay in the quiet? Then I recommend Koh Tao Cabana to. This unique beach resort is quietly located on the white beaches of Sai Ree, but also close to the coziness of Sairee Beach. The cottages are truly a picture to behold. They are partially open-air (you can just do that in Thailand!) and have a private wooden terrace with a beautiful view of the tropical surroundings. In the landscaped garden you'll find Kajavara Spa, where you can get all zen during a relaxing massage.
