1. What is the best travel time for Guatemala?
The best travel time to plan your trip through Guatemala depends entirely on the weather. This is because Guatemala has two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. From May to October is the rainy season, with most of the rain falling in the months of September and October. The rainy season has tropical downpours that can be heavy and short. Of course, traveling through Guatemala during the rainy season also has its advantages. For example, nature is at its most beautiful and prices are a lot lower.
Want to plan a trip to Guatemala during the months of April and December? Then keep in mind that these months are extra busy because of Semana Santa. Many religious events take place in the country and attract people from all over the world.
2. Is traveling through Guatemala safe?
In general, Guatemala is a safe travel destination. Personally, we also felt safe while traveling around the country. If you travel mainly to the well-known cities and places that attract many tourists, you will experience a safe feeling. For example, if you travel to the lesser-known city Quetzaltenango? Then it is extra advisable not to wander through the city's more unfamiliar neighborhoods. In addition, it is always important to use your common sense. Something unpleasant can always happen. But make sure you don't walk the streets alone at night and don't wear overpriced clothing, jewelry and your camera in plain sight. Going hiking in Guatemala? Then always make sure you go out with a local guide.
A destination known to be unsafe is Guatemala City. It is therefore also recommended that you travel directly after arrival to, for example, Antigua. Look here for current travel advice about Guatemala.
3. What is the best way to travel from place to place?
The way to travel through Guatemala is by bus. There are different types of buses, such as the famous "chickenbus" and the more comfortable shuttle and touring buses. The chickenbus, la camioneta in Spanish, are old American school buses that drive through the cities of Guatemala with a lot of noise (loud horns, music and roaring engines). It is the most economical means of transportation, so don't expect comfort. By the way, it is quite an adventure and a must-do when in Guatemala.
Do you have long distances to cover? For example, from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, it is advisable to travel these routes by shuttle bus or tour bus. The nice thing about this is that there is often air conditioning, the seats are a lot more comfortable and you also have the chance of wifi. A bus ticket can often be arranged through your accommodation or online, for example through 12Go.
4. What should I pack for a trip through Guatemala?
The landscape of Guatemala has many differences in altitude so you may encounter different climates during your trip. For example, the low-lying regions have a tropical climate, such as the destinations Flores, Lanquín and Rio Dulce.
Antigua and Lake Atitlan are about 1,500 meters above sea level. As a result, temperatures average around 20-25 degrees. This is very pleasant!
But if you go even higher, for example to Quetzaltenango or while climbing to the top of Acatenango volcano, you will face a cooler climate.
It is therefore wise to pack plenty of layers for your trip through Guatemala. Long pants, sweaters and some comfortable long-sleeved shirts are definitely smart to pack. And of course, if you're going hiking, sturdy hiking boots are a must-have!
5. What do I need to know about the local culture?
Guatemala is located in Central America and in this part of the world, Mayan culture is still very present. Thus, Guatemala is also the destination where you can encounter most of the descendants of the Maya. Currently, there are as many as 21 different Mayan languages still spoken in Guatemala. However, not every inhabitant of Guatemala is familiar with these languages; Spanish is generally the spoken language.
Especially the women you can recognize by their colorful clothing style. They wear wide skirts with a top. The skirts are the most colorful and decorated with patterns. From the pattern you can tell where the person is from, this is because the pattern differs from city to city.
Also not unimportant is Guatemala's local cuisine. Traditional dishes are basically based on Mayan culture and contain many ingredients such as corn, meat and beans. The most famous local snack is a tamales, which is a steamed corn dough roll filled with such things as meat, vegetables or fruit. They are often wrapped in a banana leaf.
6. Is Guatemala an expensive travel destination?
In Guatemala you pay with the Guatemalan quetzal. You pay almost in most places with contact money so it is wise to withdraw as much local money as possible per transaction. In Guatemala you can withdraw money at BAC Bank, here you can use almost any Dutch card.
Personally, we have found that food and drink in Guatemala do not have to be so expensive, in fact, you can decide how expensive you make it. On average you will spend around €10 for a meal in the evening and a simple lunch can easily cost €5. Most of the costs you will incur during your trip will have to do with the activities you will be doing. For example, the hike to the top of the Acatenango volcano will easily cost between €60 and €80 per person.
In terms of accommodations in Guatemala, you are also in control. You can stay inexpensively in a hostel dormitory or in a private room in a nice boutique hotel. Expect about €25 for a private room in a hostel per night and €75 for a double room in a hotel.
With an average daily budget of €50 - €70 euros, we personally feel that Guatemala is not an expensive travel destination.
