High in the mountains of Antigua In Guatemala you will find Hobbitenango, a special eco-village inspired by the world-famous film set of Lord of the Rings. Although Lord of the Rings was not filmed in Guatemala, here you imagine yourself completely in The Shire, the home of the hobbits. There are several hobbit houses to see (where you can even sleep!), a hobbit-inspired restaurant and some very photogenic spots. Here are the best tips and to do's for visiting Hobbitenango in Guatemala!

What is Hobbitenango?

Hobbitenango was founded by two locals with a passion for comics and eco-friendly construction. Their biggest plan is to create a hobbit-style eco-village. In doing so, they have let inspire on the world-famous film set in New Zealand. And they are well on their way!

But it is certainly not just a place to visit for fans of the Lord of the Rings movies. Indeed, Hobbitenango is built at an altitude of 2,400 meters, and its iconic round doors, grass-covered roofs and the impressive volcanoes in the background are a magical sight for everyone.

What can you do in Hobbitenango?

There are several things to do in Hobbitenango. For example, there are different games and there is a mega swing. But it is also recommended to walk to the beautiful viewpoints. There are also bars and restaurants, so it is also a nice place for a nice snack and drink (with a view). You can easily spend half a day in Hobbitenango.

Hike to the most beautiful viewpoints

Surely the reason we recommend Hobbitenango is because of the insane viewpoints. There are several hiking trails that lead to vantage points. In general, they are fairly short walking trails. You are surrounded by greenery, beautiful sculptures and works of art. There are also many seating areas.

The three volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango can all be seen on a clear day from Hobbit Paradise. Pay particular attention to the Fuego volcano here, as with any luck you will see plumes of smoke coming out of the volcano.

At some of the viewpoints are Instagram-worthy spots created. If you ask us, the iconic stone troll hand is the most photogenic spot overlooking the Panchoy Valley and the volcanic peaks towering in the distance.

Play different games

One of the most popular activities offered by Hobbitenango is probably the swing. After you are securely strapped in, you swing through the air with a panoramic view of the volcanoes. Keep in mind that the swing can get crowded and you may have to wait in line for a while.

Besides the swing, there are many other things to do at Hobbitenango. These include a 7-hole miniature golf course, mega Jenga and you can do archery, axe and machete throwing.

Enjoy lunch with a view in Hobbitenango

For a culinary experience, you can also enjoy a delicious lunch at Hobbitenango. The restaurants offer a variety of dishes, from typical Guatemalan to international meals like pizza. Our tip: order the sopa de frijoles. This traditional bean soup is not only very nutritious, but also incredibly delicious. And say, having lunch with this view really is a treat, isn't it?

Sleep in a hobbit house in Hobbitenango

Looking for a unique experience in Guatemala? Then spend the night in one of the hobbit houses in Hobbitenango. These so-called casitas are built with innovative, environmentally conscious techniques and are nestled into the mountainside, so to speak, overlooking the beautiful Panchoy Valley.

As soon as you step through the round doors, you immediately feel a magical atmosphere. The cozy furniture and imaginative decor of these houses inspire creativity and connection with the natural environment. Currently there are three hobbit houses available for overnight stays: La Casita del Sueño, La Casita del Nido and Cala Esmeralda. La Casita del Sueño is ideal for couples. La Casita del Nido is slightly larger, in this one you can stay overnight with two couples or a small family. La Cala Esmeralda is the largest house and has a unique terrace with incredible views.

What makes an overnight stay in a hobbit house in Hobbitenango perhaps most special? After the day visitors have left, you experience the peace of the mountain top in complete silence. An exclusive experience just for you.

In addition to the casitas, there is another accommodation: El Descanso. This is a cabin next to Hobbitenango and is the ideal accommodation for a retreat in nature. Also from El Descanso you have a magnificent view of the valley and the mountains.

View all accommodations at the website of Casitas Hobbitenango. Prices start from €103.00 per night.

What does Hobbitenango cost?

The entrance fee to visit Hobbitenango is 50 Guatemalan quetzal. This converts to just under €6.00. Everything is included in this price, such as unlimited participation in the games and swinging on the giant swing.

How do I get from Antigua to Hobbitenango?

It is about a 25-minute drive from downtown Antigua to Hobbitenango. Apart from a few small villages and farms, the eco-village is secluded from the city. So you feel like you're in another world entirely here.

There are several ways to get to Hobbitenango. For example, you can use a rental car to the village, but you can also safely use Uber and local cabs in Guatemala. An Uber from downtown Antigua costs about 35 Guatemalan quetzal (just over €4.00). There is also a shuttle bus to Hobbitenango. All of these options only take you to Hobbitenango's parking lot. Because of the steep, rocky road, you cannot get to the village with normal vehicles. However, there are 4×4s driving all day from the parking lot that can take you to the entrance of Hobbitenango. This ride with the 4×4 is included in the entrance fee of 50 Q.

Retrieved from Hobbitenango's website you will see directions, contact information to reserve the shuttle bus and current prices.

Take a quad tour through the mountains of Hobbitenango

Another fun option that takes you to Hobbitenango is by booking a quad tour. Tear through the mountains of Antigua, stop for the best viewpoints and visit the hobbit eco-village. There are several providers with quad tours. We did our tour with Direct Adventure Guatemala. They offer tours not only in the mountains of Antigua, but also in the historic center. Definitely recommended, as it is an incredibly surprising way to see a piece of Guatemala explore in special ways.
