1. The first stop in the Black Forest road trip: the hip city of Freiburg
Freiburg is often called the sunniest town in Germany, and once you walk around here, you'll understand why. The town in the south of Germany is bursting with energy! You will find beautiful historic buildings, but at the same time a hip, young atmosphere that you immediately feel as soon as you wander through the streets. Everywhere you see students congregating on the terraces, locals with a coffee to go in their hand and squares and markets that fill with smiling faces and lively conversations.
The best to do's and sights in Freiburg
The city is a mix of old and new. You will find charming squares, fun concept stores, trendy coffee shops and good restaurants. And of course, don't miss the Freiburg Münster: the imposing cathedral that forms the heart of the city. Every day the cozy Münstermarkt takes place around the Freiburger Münster, a market full of smells, colors and tastes. You will also find on the square an ultimate hotspot for wine lovers: Alte Wache Freiburg - Haus der badischen Weine.
Then walk via the small Bächle (the characteristic streams of water through the streets) to the Schlossberg, where you will find just the tranquility with a beautiful view of the city and the Black Forest.

Freudenstadt feels very different from Freiburg. Less urban, quieter, but for that very reason incredibly charming. Here you really are in the heart of the Black Forest, among green hills and forests, with a picturesque old town full of squares, historic buildings and cozy cafes. It is a fine place in the Black Forest to slow down, recharge and immerse yourself in the peace and charm of this special region.

The Marktplatz, Germany's largest market square, is the beating heart of the city. Here you will find terraces, small boutiques and craft stores. Very nice to stroll around and soak up the local atmosphere of Freudenstadt.
For a unique view, climb to the top of the 43-meter-high Rathaus tower. Standing there, you can only see how green and vast the surroundings are. A beautiful sight!

Highly recommended is the short walk to Ellbachseeblick on the Kniebis, where you can breathe in the wonderful forest air and enjoy breathtaking views. We were there in autumn, and the colors were amazing, but also in spring it must be incredibly beautiful here with all the greenery and blooming nature.
TipTip: Combine a city tour with culinary experiences. Try local delicacies (such as Schwarzwalder Schinken and pretzels) at different restaurants while learning fun stories about the city. A fun and original way to really experience Freudenstadt.
The best place to stay in Freudenstadt
In Freudenstadt, we found a gem of an accommodation: Hotel Fritz Lauterbad. We immediately felt pampered here. Spacious rooms, a heated outdoor pool that you can use in any season, saunas and a beautiful view of the surrounding nature. Here you can really unwind. The hotel combines luxury with a trendy boutique look, making it feel stylish and cozy at the same time.
For a great night out, walk straight to Berghütte Lauterbad, near the hotel. Here you immerse yourself in a traditional German atmosphere, with a beautiful view and tasty dishes. We enjoyed the cheese fondue, accompanied by a nice wine from the region, a Weißburgunder. Highly recommended for a cozy culinary experience after a day in nature.
3. Creative Karlsruhe: the last stop on the Black Forest road trip
Karlsruhe immediately surprises with its mix of creativity and innovation. The city is sometimes called the “Silicon Valley of Germany,” thanks to tech giants, start-ups and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
You feel an energy here that is progressive and dynamic, but at the same time it is surprisingly historic and charming. With the palace in the heart of the city and the burgundian influences from nearby France, you immediately feel relaxed here. Surrounded by the green foothills of the Black Forest, you can combine city and nature very well here.

Stroll through the surrounding gardens and enjoy the greenery that gives the city an open, relaxed atmosphere. From here you can walk straight to Marktplatz, where cozy cafes, fine restaurants and local stores showcase the city's Mediterranean and Burgundian influences.
A must for art and tech lovers is the ZKM - Center for Art and Media. Housed in a former industrial complex, the museum combines modern art with interactive media. It is a place where creativity and technology come together playfully. Do you like to play video games? Then be sure to visit the permanent exhibition “ZKM_Gameplay.”.
For a picturesque contrast, drive to Durlach, a historic district with narrow streets, squares and half-timbered houses that give a village-like feel. Climb to the Turmberg, where you'll have panoramic views of Karlsruhe and the surrounding green hills of the Black Forest.
Tip: are you fond of shared dining? Then book a table at Anders auf dem Turmberg, a restaurant with insanely good food and a very nice view of the city.
