Between rolling vineyards, winding roads and quaint villages, you'll discover one of Luxembourg's best-kept secrets: the Moselle region. Stretching along the Moselle River, this wine region is the place for those who love good wine, tranquility and insane views. Visit this wine region and taste the refined Luxembourg wines, but also take in the typical character of the region. From exceptional wineries to idyllic viewpoints and culinary hotspots, these are our top tips for a weekend in Luxembourg's Moselle.

Tips for visiting the Moselle in Luxembourg

The Moselle winds its way from France through Luxembourg to Germany, but the Luxembourgish section is perhaps the most surprising. Here you’ll find authentic wineries, charming wine villages like Remich and Grevenmacher, and a landscape that never fails to enchant.

The wine region is especially known for its crisp white wines, made from grape varieties like Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Auxerrois. The climate, along with the clay- and limestone-rich soil, gives Luxembourg wines their refined flavors. And believe us, you can really taste the difference.

What makes the Moselle in Luxembourg so appealing is that it’s still a relatively undiscovered gem. While the German Moselle can sometimes feel busy and touristy, here you’ll find peace, space, and genuine hospitality. The region is compact, making it perfect for a weekend getaway.

In a long weekend, you can taste a variety of wines, walk through the vineyards, and explore the charming villages along the river. The views from the vineyard slopes are breathtaking, especially with a glass of local Riesling in hand. Add the region’s gourmet food and relaxed, indulgent atmosphere, and you have all the ingredients for a delicious and memorable getaway.

The most beautiful viewpoints in the Moselle region in Luxembourg

One of the best ways to experience the Moselle region in Luxembourg is from above. The river winds through the landscape, surrounded by sprawling vineyards, rolling hills, and picturesque villages. Throughout the region, you’ll find several viewpoints where you can stop and take in the scenery. Here are our three favourites, each well worth a short detour!

1. View of Machtum

Our absolute favourite is the viewpoint overlooking the village of Machtum and the winding Moselle River curling around it. The journey there is an experience in itself: a country road through pastures with grazing cows and open fields. Once you arrive, a panoramic view awaits, giving you the feeling of being completely away from it all.

Curious about the location? These are the coordinates to navigate to the viewpoint.

2. Viewpoint near Greiveldange

This viewpoint is located atop the rolling hills of Greiveldange. Along the road, you’ll find a few spots to park and take a photo break. From here, you get a wide view over the vineyards covering the hills. In the distance, you can see the village of Stadsbredimus, with the Moselle calmly winding its way through the landscape. In our opinion, it’s a perfect spot for a short photo stop or even a picnic with a view, there are tables and wooden deck chairs available at the parking area.

Picnic with a view of the Moselle? Then head to this viewpoint near Greiveldange.

3. Koeppchen, Wormeldange

In Wormeldange, you’ll find a charming little chapel with perhaps the most photogenic view in the region. From this spot, you can look out over the Moselle, the village of Koeppchen, and the surrounding vineyard-covered hills. The combination of tranquility, elevation, and scenery makes this viewpoint one of our favourites.

Tip: especially during sunrise or sunset, it's magically beautiful here!

The best wineries for a tour and tasting

The Luxembourg Moselle is famous for its beautiful vineyard landscapes and wineries. During our trip, we visited three gems where you can not only taste excellent wines but also experience the authentic atmosphere of the region.

1. Domaine 64

Domaine 64 is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique wine experience. Here, you can enjoy a glass of wine literally among the vineyards, with panoramic views of the slopes and the Moselle. It’s a truly relaxing way to get acquainted with typical Luxembourg wines, such as Riesling or Pinot Gris. What makes this spot so special, in our opinion, is its laid-back atmosphere.

In the summer, events are regularly held here, including the Wine Taste Enjoy festival. During this annual festival, several wineries open their doors, and at Domaine 64, they really make it a celebration. This year even featured a special paella afternoon, complete with warm sunshine, lively music, and great company.

2. Caves St. Martin

On the outskirts of the town of Remich, you’ll find Caves St. Martin, one of Luxembourg’s most well-known and oldest wineries. Visiting this winery is about more than just tasting wine, it’s about experiencing its rich history and impressive underground cellars. The centuries-old caves, carved into the limestone rock, can be explored during a guided tour. The tasting itself even takes place in these caves. With thousands of bottles aging below ground, it’s truly an impressive sight.

We recommend tasting one (or more) of the sparkling wines at Caves St. Martin. Crémant is typical for the region, and the Crémant de Luxembourg from St. Martin has even won international awards!

3. Domaine Kox

When a company is born out of passion and love for a product, we’re immediately fans. That’s certainly the case with Domaine Kox. This family-run winery, producing wine since 1909, is a small estate where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. With respect for the vines, they use modern techniques to create unique and sustainable wines.

During a visit to the estate, you’ll receive a warm welcome and learn more about their philosophy: respect for nature, precision in the winemaking process, and a love for the craft. You can taste a variety of wines, including crisp Auxerrois, elegant Pinot Blanc, and, of course, the indispensable Riesling. If you’re looking for a surprising orange wine, this is the place to try one.

Tip: During the Wine Taste Enjoy festival, you can order a blind tasting here. You choose a theme, for example "The Unusual," and receive 5 glasses to sample. Only afterwards you are told which wines you’ve tasted. A fun way to test your own wine knowledge!

3. Great restaurants and bars in the wine region

Besides the stunning views and wine tasting, the Luxembourg Moselle region also has some surprisingly great spots to eat and drink. From a cozy riverside bar to a luxurious fine dining restaurant, and even a venue with panoramic views, there’s something for every taste.

1. Tiny Bar

Located in a beautiful spot along the Moselle, just outside the centre of Remich, you’ll find Tiny Bar, a small but incredibly cozy place. The setting has a beach club vibe, enhanced by the relaxed music and the little sandy area with sun loungers. Our favourite? The Crémant Rosé!

2. Restaurant Wäistuff Leuck Sàrl

For anyone who, like us, enjoys a culinary experience, Wäistuff Leuck Sàrl in Ehnen is a real must-visit. The restaurant combines a warm, inviting interior with a refined cuisine that focuses mainly on local ingredients. Of course, dining here pairs perfectly with wines carefully selected from their own vineyards.

3. Restaurant Koeppchen

One of the popular restaurants in the Luxembourg Moselle is Restaurant Koeppchen in Wormeldange. Here, you dine among the locals while enjoying panoramic views of the vineyards and the river. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the menu features classic dishes from Luxembourg’s traditional cuisine. We had a wonderful meal here, with a good glass of wine in hand as the sun slowly set.

Where to stay in the Moselle region in Luxembourg?

Along the Moselle in Luxembourg, you’ll find beautiful hotels and apartments where you can stay.

We stayed at the cozy Hôtel Casa 49, which has only 8 rooms. The hotel is located on the edge of Remich, one of the better-known towns in the Luxembourg Moselle. Its riverside location makes it a perfect base for exploring the region, whether by bike or by car. The owners are incredibly friendly and welcoming, the rooms are stylish and modern, and both the breakfast and the Italian menu for lunch or dinner are absolutely delicious!

Looking for accommodation with a few extra facilities, like a gym and a pool? Then Hotel de l’Ecluse Supior is a great choice. This hotel is also beautifully located along the Moselle, close to our favourite viewpoint overlooking Stadtbredimus.

More great tips for visiting the Moselle in Luxembourg

There are plenty of other ways to experience the Moselle region in Luxembourg. How about attending a fun event or wandering through the streets of Remich? Or, if you prefer to stay active, head out into nature!

1. The Wine Taste Enjoy Festival

Want to experience the Luxembourg Moselle at its liveliest? Plan your weekend getaway during the annual Wine Taste Enjoy festival. During this weekend, many wineries open their doors, and it’s all about discovering, tasting, and enjoying. You’ll literally get a taste of the region’s richness, from classic white wines to fascinating sparkling Crémants.

In addition to wine tastings, there are often guided tours, live music, and small food events. Buses run between the villages and wineries, making the festival very accessible. On a nice day, you can of course hop on a bike to visit as many locations as possible, or simply stay put at a cozy spot and enjoy the atmosphere without watching the clock.

For more information about the festival, visit the Visit Moselle website.

2. Hiking at Schengen

Between all the wine tasting, you might also want to get active for a bit. A varied way to explore the Moselle region is by going for a walk. A great tip is the "Traumschleife Schengen Without Borders" trail. This 8-kilometre route starts in the well-known border village of Schengen and takes you past vineyards, open fields, and forested hills.

Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of the tripoint between Luxembourg, Germany, and France. It’s a beautiful route that transforms during the hike—from rolling vineyard slopes to quiet forest paths and idyllic picnic spots. One of the highlights is the panoramic viewpoint atop the hills, where you can see the Moselle winding through the landscape in the distance.

Tip: end your day with a drink on a terrace in Schengen and visit the small but interesting Musée Européen Schengen, which tells the story of the creation of the Schengen Agreement.

3. Wander through the streets of the village of Remich

Remich is often called the “Pearl of the Moselle.” This charming town lies right on the Moselle River, with a lovely promenade perfect for a stroll.

We enjoyed wandering through the streets here, people-watching, and ending the day with a drink on the terrace at Tiny Bar. Another fun activity is crossing the bridge for a short walk—on the other side, you’ll find yourself in Germany.

Remich isn’t large, but it’s charming and photogenic, a perfect spot to immerse yourself in Luxembourg’s wine culture.

The Moselle region in Luxembourg is very compact, making it ideal to explore by car. The villages are close to each other, and along the way, you’ll drive through beautiful landscapes of vineyards, rolling hills, and scenic viewpoints. Parking is usually free in the area. If you need a car for your trip, you can easily rent one in Luxembourg via Sunny Cars.

Prefer to get active? The region is also great to explore by bike. There’s a cycle path along the river connecting most of the villages. You can ride leisurely from winery to winery, with the Moselle always by your side. How fun!
