The Mullerthal region in Luxembourg is a breathtakingly beautiful, impressive and fairytale-like area. After a beautiful walk between the gigantic rock formations and after quite a few meters of altitude climbing, we completely understand why the Mullerthal region is also called Little Switzerland. The famous Mullerthal Trail is a popular hiking route totaling 112 kilometers that leads you right through the varying landscapes of Luxembourg's most beautiful region. These are our tips for hiking the Mullerthal Trail in Luxembourg!
The Mullerthal region
The undulating landscape of the Mullerthal region is a fantastic area to hike through. The area is characterized by immense sandstone cliffs and insane natural beauty. The Mullerthal Trail is not for nothing the showpiece among the hiking trails of Luxembourg. You will not find miles high mountains with white snow peaks, but by erosion particularly formed rock formations, caves, gorges and meters high cliffs where you are lucky real adventurers see the walls climbing. All in all, reason enough to call this region the Little Switzerland of Luxembourg.
The hiking routes of the Mullerthal Trail
The 112-kilometer-long Mullerthal Trail is divided into three hiking trails. Of course, all these hiking routes can be expanded with additional routes, but these three together thus form the famous Mullerthal Trail. Hiking Route 1 is a route totaling 36 kilometers and is characterized by the impressive rock formations, forest areas and meadows with some cultural highlights here and there. Hiking trails 2 and 3 are both 38 kilometers but are definitely different from each other. Whereas on hiking trail 2 you actually walk through the area of Little Switzerland, on hiking trail 3 you walk more through the fairytale area of the Mullerthal region. Think of the familiar pictures of beautiful streams and romantic castles along the way.
The entire trail is well-maintained, and the distinctive signage means you certainly won't get lost easily. Difficult paths are equipped with footbridges, decks and stairs. You can therefore say that the Mullerthal Trail is doable for young and old alike. Handy to know is that the difficulty level of the Mullerthal Trail is medium to heavy, this is partly due to the many height differences.
Hiking route B2 of the Mullerthal Trail
For those who do not like multi-day hikes, it is good to know that you can also see the highlights of the Mullerthal Trail by hiking a small part of the route. In fact, in addition to the three main routes, there are several smaller hiking trails that allow you to explore part of the area. We walked together with a guide, which we can definitely recommend, the hiking route B2 that starts and ends at the tourist office in Berdorf.
Walking route B2 is an adventurous route of about 4 kilometers. Along the way you walk across wobbly footbridges, climb (if you dare) the Alderhorst via an iron ladder, zigzag through the seven narrow rock gorges and arrive at an insanely beautiful viewpoint. And make no mistake, you can easily take a whole morning or afternoon for this hike!
Hiking route E1: the historic city of Echternach as a base
Another fun and highly recommended one is hiking trail E1, a circuit totaling 13.5 kilometers that starts and ends in Echternach. You can of course walk this route all the way, but a good alternative is to walk half the route. Park your car in the parking lot "Parking A Kack" and then take the (free!) bus to Berdorf. From here follow the hiking path E1 until you are back in the historic city of Echternach.
The highlights of the Mullerthal Trail
The Mullerthal region is far too big to see all the highlights in one go, unless indeed you set aside several days to hike the entire Mullerthal Trail. Any hiking trail through the region will take you to insanely beautiful places, but there are some highlights that really should not be missed. For example, the beautiful waterfall and bridge at Schiessentümpel is definitely worth a visit. But also go to the beautiful rock formation Champignon near Nommern and the iconic Gorge du Loup / Wollefsschlucht near Echternach. Finally, we also recommend visiting the gorge Däiwelsinsel near Bergdorf.
What are nice accommodations to stay overnight in the Mullerthal region?
Many people combine a visit to the Mullerthal region with a city trip Echternach. Because Echternach is so small, it is easy to combine it with a visit to the Mullerthal. Many accommodations can be found in this nature reserve. View the overview of accommodations in Mullerthal on Booking.com To make the right choice.
Recommendations are Hotel Eden Au Lac and Bel Air Sports & Wellness. Hotel Eden au Lac is located in the Mullerthal Valley. It is therefore the ideal base for those looking for nature and adventure. Hotel Bel Air Sport & Wellness is located in its own park amidst a wooded area overlooking the Sauer Valley.
Tips for hiking through Luxembourg's Little Switzerland
Personally, we really enjoyed walking with a guide. It is a valuable addition to an afternoon walk. You walk with a guide who knows the area like the back of his hand, knows the most beautiful spots and knows a lot about the area. There are often side branches on the route that are fun to add to your hike. Like crawling through caves on hiking route B2, which we probably would have passed by on our own.
The Mullerthal region is beautiful in any season, but it can also be treacherous in any season. It is therefore important to put on good walking shoes, should you not have them, shoes with a good tread are recommended.
Remember to stop for a moment every now and then. Look around and enjoy the natural beauty of this area. And be sure to look up as well, as the rock formations can be meters above you.
