For a trip close to home, the Éislek in Luxembourg definitely worth considering. The Luxembourg Ardennes, as the region is also known, is home to beautiful landscapes, dense forests and charming villages to explore. As such, it is a popular area among hikers and cyclists, as well as culture vultures. The best way to discover the north of Luxembourg is through a road trip. Go out and discover the highlights of the Éislek using our tips!

These are the highlights of the Éislek in Luxembourg

The Éislek, it is the ideal destination for those who love hiking and biking, but also for those who love discovering picturesque villages. Did you already know that this amazing region is home to some of the best maintained medieval remains? These are the highlights!

1. Vianden

Topping the list is the lovely Vianden. A village beautifully situated between steep mountain slopes and with an idyllic location on the river Our. One of Vianden's attractions is the imposing Vianden Castle, but the chairlift up the steep mountainside is also a favorite with tourists. It takes you to the top of the mountain from where you have a beautiful panoramic view of Vianden, Vianden Castle and the vast surroundings.

2. Clervaux

Another cozy village you'll want to visit when taking a road trip through the Éislek is Clervaux. When you drive up, the first thing you immediately see is the white castle in the middle of the village, but the church with two towers also catches your eye. The Castle of Clervaux offers a war museum that you can visit, but there are also other exhibitions regularly on display. Currently, you can visit the photo exhibition The Family of Man - UNESCO Memory of the World visits. There are as many as 503 photographs on display by 273 photographers from 68 countries worldwide. The series of photographs are post-war and together form a manifesto for peace and equality between people.

Then there are a few sights we can't keep from you. The first is Cité de l'Image, a photography exhibition that can be admired outdoors. You will find the works of national and international photographers on walls of houses, in flowering gardens and along narrow streets. Second, we would like to tip you to the upper Abbey of Clervaux. A picture to behold!

By the way, Clervaux is a perfect base from which to explore the Luxembourg Ardennes, there are many hiking and biking trails that cross this city. In the center you will find some nice terraces where you can have a great time on sunny days. There are some stores and also restaurants. A hot spot where we have eaten well in the evening is at tapas bar Dos Gringos.

3. Château de Bourscheid

The great thing about a road trip is that you get to visit different places and discover an awful lot of your travel destination. A long weekend away gives you enough time to explore the highlights of the Éislek in Luxembourg and even stop at special spots. One spot in the middle of nowhere is Château de Bourscheid. This is the largest castle in Luxembourg and dates back no less than year 1000. You can visit the castle for free with the Luxembourg Card. From the ramparts you look out over the picturesque highlands and winding valleys. And we can always enjoy those vistas!

4. Ridge Molberlee in the Our Nature Park.

The north of Luxembourg lends itself perfectly to taking beautiful walks. And a very nice place for this is the Our Nature Park, and especially the Molberlee ridge. You can find the nature park near Hoscheid. Molberlee, as we said, is a rocky ridge that you can hike over, and it offers panoramic views of the Schlinder Valley. The nature park in itself is unique for its great biodiversity and is therefore designated as a forest reserve and natural monument. Two beautiful trails we would like to recommend to you are:

When you go hiking through nature, have you ever tried to be still for the entire walk? To become one with nature with every step you take. We are always open to new experiences and so for the first time we have a Yoga Walk done in the Molberlee Nature Park. This is a beautiful and soothing way to take a walk through nature. With a meditation and an exercise here and there, you'll be totally zen in no time!

5. Esch-sur-Sûre

Although you will have seen the village in no time, it is still a place where you have to stop. We're talking about the charming Esch-sur-Sûre. This historic town consists of little more than a few houses at the foot of a castle ruin. The climb up is fun to do and takes you to the ruins that date back to the year 927. Have another cup of coffee or enjoy a nice lunch before continuing your road trip through the Éislek. Still have time to spare? Then take a look at the Cloth Factory where you can admire one of the old craft traditions. You can take a tour and see for yourself how exclusive wool fabrics are produced.

6. Panoramic viewpoint Belvédère Burfelt

With all those winding valleys and rolling hills, you probably won't be surprised to find some great vantage points in the Éislek. Our personal favorite is the Panoramic Platform Belvédère Burfelt. The wooden platform floats some 70 meters above the Upper Sûre Lake and offers beautiful views.

7. Musée de l'Ardoise

It may surprise you to learn that in the hilly landscapes of Luxembourg you can also find mines, some of which are Musée de l'Ardoise is a special gem. The slate mine closed permanently in 1986 and only reopened as a museum in 2018. Together with a guide, we went to a depth of -42 meters. But did you already know that your miners here went to a depth of as much as -168 meters? Today -42 meters is the maximum depth, all deeper underground passages are filled with groundwater. After a visit underground you can also take a look at the former production barns, here you can also put your own skills to the test by making a beautiful roof tile from a slate.

Where to stay in Éislek, Luxembourg?

The north of Luxembourg offers some great places to stay. In villages like Vianden and Clervaux you can find good hotels and cozy bed & breakfasts, but we prefer to choose a gem in nature. And then we quickly end up at Cocoon Hotel La Rive

Cocoon Hotel La Rive

At the foot of the imposing Château de Bourscheid you will find this fine 4-star hotel with its own beach. You can stay in one of the hotel rooms, but preferably choose one of the cottages along the river. In the evening you can enjoy culinary dishes in the hotel's restaurant, where even the locals love to come. Enjoy the wooded surroundings and sounds of nature around you!
