What to do in Vianden and its surroundings?
With about 2,000 inhabitants, the small medieval town of Vianden is a popular place to visit in Luxembourg. Especially in spring and during the summer months, when the flowers cheerfully decorate the town, it is very bustling. The terraces are full and people stroll along the river Our. The following tips will help you get the most out of your visit to Vianden.
1. Visit the Castle of Vianden
The Castle of Vianden is literally the highlight of a visit to the city. Even from afar you can see the castle rising prominently above the city. Especially on sunny days, it is truly a picture to behold. The castle was built between the 11th and 14th century and is one of the most beautiful castles in Luxembourg. You can visit the castle where you will get an interesting and fascinating insight into the noble history of Vianden. The rooms you can visit, including the dining room, banquet hall and study, are richly filled with antique furniture and paintings, but you will also find old weapons, armor and much more.
It is nice to know that Vianden Castle came into the hands of the Nassau family in the 15th century. To be precise, the castle belonged to the family from 1417 to 1820. Therefore, it is not for nothing that many Dutch people visit the castle. You can walk through the castle independently or use an audio tour. The entrance fee to the castle is €10 per person for an adult, €5 for students and €2.50 for children.
Tip: Avoid the crowds and visit Vianden Castle right at 10:00 a.m. when the castle opens its doors.

3. Take the chairlift to a height of 440 meters for a view of the city
For a beautiful and panoramic view of Vianden, take the chairlift, the only one in all of Luxembourg. The chairlift takes you to an altitude of 440 meters from where you have a unique view of the Castle of Vianden, but of course also the vast surroundings. On top of the hill you will find a viewing platform and a restaurant. From the front terrace you have the most beautiful views.
The chairlift in Vianden is open from Easter through October. Before your visit to Luxembourg, have you got the LuxembourgCard purchased? Then you can take a free ride with this card. If you don't have one, a single ticket costs €6.50 per person and a return €9 per person. Good to know is that the chairlift remains closed in bad weather. 4. Stroll through the streets of Vianden
The town of Vianden is located in the middle of the breathtaking landscape of the Éislek and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Although Vianden is still considered a town, it is more of a cozy village when it comes to the number of inhabitants. Vianden offers fantastic alleys to wander through, beautiful Gothic churches to visit, cozy squares with terraces to plop down and a short but fun walking trail along the Our River. Unsurprisingly, on sunny days this is a lovely place to be. The cobblestone streets full of colored houses are incredibly photogenic, so don't forget to bring your camera.

There is plenty of choice of restaurants and cafes in Vianden, but are you looking for an atmospheric place for a nice lunch or dinner? 6. Take a walk through the rich nature of the nearby Mullerthal Valley
Do you feel like going into nature after visiting Vianden? Then you'll find the Mullerthal Valley at a 30-minute drive from the city. A wonderful destination for hiking. Perhaps you have already heard of the Mullerthal Trail? This is a route of no less than 112 kilometers and takes you past the most impressive rock formations and valleys. Of course, there are also plenty of other walks you can do in Mullerthal, for example the hiking trail B2 which is only 4 kilometers in total. Ideal to combine with a visit to Vianden!
