Luxembourg City travel guide: top attractions and insider tips

Wondering what to do in Luxembourg City during your city trip? The capital of Luxembourg may be compact, but it’s full of unique spots and impressive landmarks. History is everywhere you look, from grand fortifications and castles to beautifully preserved buildings that tell centuries of stories. The city’s historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason, and its charming streets and squares are attractions in their own right. Here are the top sights and highlights you won’t want to miss in Luxembourg City:

1. Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator

One of the things that makes Luxembourg City truly unique is its elevation changes, which offer countless scenic views across the city. A must-do experience is a ride on the Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator. The glass Pfaffenthal elevator connects the historic upper town (Oberstadt) with the lower district of Pfaffenthal in the Alzette Valley. The elevator ride is free of charge, and you can take it as many times as you like. It’s not only practical, but also one of the best ways to take in a breathtaking view of the city from above.

2. Place d'Armes

One of the most beautiful squares in Luxembourg City is Place d'Armes. On sunny days, the square comes to life with inviting outdoor cafés, the perfect spot to relax and people-watch. In winter, it transforms into one of the most charming Christmas markets in the city, full of festive lights and cozy stalls. Twice a month, on the second and fourth Saturday, the square also hosts a lovely brocante market (flea market), where you can browse for unique finds like vintage postcards, porcelain, and antique furniture.

3. Place de la Constitution

Place de la Constitution is the place to be for the view of the ravine with the Pont Adolphe. The Pont Adolphe is a magnificent bridge built from 1900 to 1903 and was also called Pont Neuf.

You will also find an impressive monument at Place de la Constitution. It was erected in memory of the victims of World War I. The statue at the base is the gilded goddess of victory "Gëlle Fra". You will also notice a small house in this square. This is the entrance to the Casemates de Pétrusse, the famous casemates built by the Spaniards in the 17th century.

During the Christmas holidays, Place de la Constitution is transformed into a cozy Christmas village with a Ferris wheel, food stalls and souvenir stalls. You will find here an overview of current Christmas activities and spots in Luxembourg City. Also take a look at our article on the Christmas markets in Luxembourg City.

4. Pont Adolphe

One of Luxembourg City's most famous structures is undoubtedly the Adolfs Bridge, or Pont Adolphe. This impressive arch bridge connects the train station and the Gare district with the historic center of the city. You could say: this is where the old meets the new Luxembourg.

The bridge spans the green valley of the Pétrusse, through which flows the river of the same name. What makes this place so special is the magnificent view from the bridge over the deep gorge and the stately Place de la Constitution. Tip: be sure to walk to the bottom of the bridge, too! There you will find a separate suspension bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, from where you look through a sort of tunnel into the greenery of the Parc de la Pétrusse, a view you don't want to miss.

5. Le Chemin de la Corniche

The Chemin de la Corniche has been called "the most beautiful balcony in Europe," and for good reason. Here you have a panoramic view of the city's deep valleys and historic monuments. The boardwalk follows the route of Luxembourg City's former defensive ramparts, which rise above the Alzette River. When the fortifications partially disappeared to make way for today's city, the boardwalk was built. No matter where you walk, there are magnificent views everywhere here. As such, it is one of the most beautiful sights in Luxembourg City.

6. The Grund

One of the nicest and most photogenic neighborhoods in Luxembourg City is without a doubt the Grund. We are always looking for original places with character during our travels, and in the Grund we immediately fell in love. Located in the low-lying part of the city, along the Alzette River, this picturesque district is also the oldest part of Luxembourg City.

Here you stroll along charming streets filled with houses in medieval architectural style, with an atmosphere all around you as if you had traveled back in time. During the day you can take a leisurely stroll here and enjoy the view of the surrounding fortress walls, while at night it is buzzing with life. Indeed, the Grund is also a popular neighborhood among students, with cozy cafes, cozy restaurants and bars providing a lively atmosphere.

Tip: you reach this district very easily with the free Ascenseur Plateau St. Esprit - Grund, an elevator that takes you down from the upper city center in no time. As far as we are concerned, the Grund is a real must-see during your city break to Luxembourg City!

7. Kirchberg

The Kirchberg district is the business district of Luxembourg City. It is where many European Union institutions are located, along with other offices and banks. Kirchberg is located on a plateau, and if you look at the district from Pfaffenthal, the view is dominated by high-rise buildings. At first, not a place you expect to find worth visiting as a traveler, but nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, it is the place to be for art and architecture lovers. You will find here, for example, Luxembourg's national concert hall, Philharmonie Luxembourg, as well as the MUDAM, a museum of modern art.

The MUDAM, in full the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean was opened in 2006. MUDAM was designed by Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, known for the glass pyramid of the Louvre in Paris, among other things. The museum houses a collection of contemporary painting and sculpture and video.

We unfortunately did not yet discover the Kirchberg district during our city break to Luxembourg City, but that's enough reason to come back to learn about Luxembourg's art and architecture here.

8. Unwind in Luxembourg City’s City Park

Right in the center of Luxembourg City you will find a delightful green oasis: the City Park, also known as Parc Edouard André. This park winds like a green loop around the old center and is a nice place for a short walk, a picnic or just some rest between your sightseeing.

What makes the City Park in Luxembourg City truly special is that it offers much more than just greenery. Thanks to the LUGA (Luxembourg Urban Garden) project, parts of the park have been transformed into vibrant cultural spaces. One of the best examples is Mikrokosmos, a hidden summer terrace and creative hub nestled among the trees. It’s where nature and culture blend seamlessly through small-scale events, live music, art installations, and relaxed seating areas.

Looking to explore Luxembourg City’s culinary scene? The 3-hour food tour 'Uncover the Tastes of Luxembourg' takes you through the historic center where you can sample unique local dishes like Rieslingspaschtéit, Kniddelen, and artisan chocolates. Along the way, you’ll get insights into Luxembourg’s rich food culture, including local wines and delicacies. A delicious and authentic way to experience the city!

The best places to stay during a city break Luxembourg City

Looking for a great place to stay during your city break? Luxembourg City offers plenty of charming hotels and accommodations to choose from. Staying in or near the historic city center is ideal. You’ll be close to the main attractions, cozy restaurants, and boutique shops. Even if you choose a hotel just outside the center, getting around is easy thanks to the city’s excellent (and free!) public transport system. Wherever you stay, you’ll be well connected and ready to explore the best of Luxembourg City.

We stayed in two very different, but both lovely hotels during our trip. On the edge of the green Pétrusse valley, we had our overnight at Hotel Le Châtelet, a charming 3-star hotel just a 10-minute walk from the train station and the old town center. The hotel is quietly located, stylishly decorated and feels like a warm home away from home in the city.

For a totally different vibe, we also opted for an overnight stay in Mama Shelter Luxembourg, a trendy and playful design hotel located in the modern district of Kirchberg. It features a colorful rooftop bar, its own private cinema, and creative co-working spaces, ideal for digital nomads or anyone who loves a lively atmosphere. Thanks to the nearby tram connection, you can reach the city center in just 15 minutes. A great choice if you’re into stylish stays with a fun, creative vibe.
