Echternach is a small town in Luxembourg near the border with Germany. Located on the Sûre River, it is the oldest city in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. History is visible everywhere, making Echternach still has a real medieval character. You are surrounded by stately buildings, old patrician houses and you walk through narrow streets and along old city walls. A visit to the city can be well combined with a day trip to Luxembourg City. But also a walk through the Müllerthal region should not be missed when visiting Echternach. There is plenty to do in the area so. So here are our tips for what to see and do in Echternach!

Stroll through the inner city of Echternach

The center of Echternach is largely car-free. Only pedestrians are allowed to walk. The historic center is a tourist attraction and this can be seen in the many restaurants, terraces, cafes and stores. Especially in the summer months Echternach is crowded. But also in autumn, the period we were there, it is worth visiting the city.

Echternach is also known for its jumping procession. This is a Catholic procession held every year on Tuesday after Pentecost in memory of St. Willibrord who founded the Abbey of Echternach in 698. The leaping procession was included on UNESCO's Intangible World Heritage List in 2010. The processional march lasts about 2 hours and you can attend.

See the beautiful sights in Echternach

There are several special attractions to be found in Echternach, such as the market square, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the Abbey of Echternach, the Palace of Justice and the prehistoric museum.

Place du Marché

The market square plays a central role in the city and is called Place du Marché. In summer, it is a place of one and all conviviality. It is surrounded by colorful historic buildings with restaurants and stores. The many terraces dominate the square and annual markets and events are held here regularly. Right next to the square you will find a lively shopping street. What really stands out in the marketplace is the Denzelt.

The former courthouse

The Denzelt is the former Palace of Justice and was used as a court and city jail. If you ask us, the medieval building is by far the most impressive structure in Echternach. It is beautiful stately architecture with arched vaults, turrets and an imposing facade decorated with statues of the cardinal virtues.

The Abbey of Willibrordus

One of the most famous sights in town is Willibrordus Abbey. During World War II, Echternach, including the abbey, was almost completely destroyed. The tomb of Willibrordus and the basilica survived the war. In 1950, the abbey was rebuilt to its original forms. You can also take a look at the Abbey Museum.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul

The ancient parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built on a hill in the middle of town and is considered the oldest Christian shrine in the area. The merovingian, Romanesque and Gothic elements of the church make St. Peter and Paul Church absolutely worth a visit.

The city walls of Echternach

The historic character of Echternach is not only visible in the center, but is also quickly betrayed by the old city walls. The city wall is over 1,000 years old and was originally two kilometers long. The wall consisted of six gates, 14 towers and a wide moat. Unfortunately, pieces of the city wall have been lost, but you can still admire parts of it.

Hike part of the Mullerthal Trail

Echternach is part of the Luxembourg Ardennes and borders the German Eifel. The beautiful surroundings of Echternach are also known as Petit Suisse: Little Switzerland.
