Nizwa, the cultural heart of Oman, is one of those towns where you can spend hours strolling around. With its cozy, photogenic streets, impressive historic buildings and quaint stores full of handmade souvenirs and traditional pottery, Nizwa offers an authentic Omani experience. The iconic Nizwa Fort, one of the country's most important religious landmarks, towers proudly above the city. In the town of Nizwa, you will experience Omani culture like no other, making it an absolute must-see destination when traveling through Oman. Curious about the best things to do in Nizwa? The authentic town of Nizwa in Oman
The historic town of Nizwa is located some 140 km west of Muscat, at the foot of the rugged mountains of Jebel Akhdar. The name of the town is derived from the Arabic word "Nuzha," which means "pleasant stay. And this is exactly what you will experience here! Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in the country and is beautifully situated, surrounded by a sea of swaying green date palms. This provides a beautiful contrast to the town, which is almost entirely sand-colored. Formerly an important trading town, Nizwa has become one of the country's main tourist attractions. Why? We'll share that with you!
1. Visit the Nizwa Fort
Because of the trading city's wealth and strategic location, it was regularly targeted by troops seeking to conquer Nizwa. To protect these riches, the Nizwa Fort was built, which today is one of the city's main attractions.
You can enter the Nizwa Fort for an insane view of the city of Nizwa, the dagel plantations and surrounding mountains. It is best known for its 40-meter-high round tower. Stroll through the fort and admire the hand-carved wooden doors and wander through the maze of corridors that transport you into a rich past.
The entrance fee to the Nizwa Fort is about €12.00 (in 2024) converted. It is on the high side, but I found it well worth it to enter the fort.
2. Learn about the Falaj Daris irrigation canal in the park of the same name
Something very interesting to know more about are the aflaj in Oman. A falaj (plural aflaj) is a historic irrigation system. At 7990 meters long, the Falaj Daris in Nizwa is one of the largest irrigation canals in Oman and one of six canals in the country recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The water still flows through the restored part of the falaj visible in this beautiful park. In the park surrounding Falaj Daris, you will find shady picnic spots amidst blooming tropical flowers such as fragrant frangipani, peacock flowers and bougainvillea.
3. Stroll through the colorful souks of Nizwa
Around the Nizwa Fort you'll find the town's traditional souk. And if there's one thing I always love when I travel, it's local markets. There is no better way to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn more about the gastronomy.
Meat, fish, spices and vegetables are mainly traded in the souks in Nizwa. Stroll past the stalls where local artisans sell their wares. Dates in particular are seen everywhere. The city is surrounded by date palms and the fresh dates are traded in the city's souks. A lot of traditional pottery is also sold. But also let the smells and colors of spices carry you away, it is truly a feast!
4. Feast your eyes on Nizwa's goat market.
Want to really immerse yourself in the local culture in Nizwa? Then head to the goat market where goats are traded. Every Friday morning, this market is a lively chaos. Make sure you get there at 7:00 a.m. because that's when the goat market starts. It is a special sight to see, the local farmers coming together and pulling out all the stops to present their goats. It is the way to get a glimpse of local life in Oman.
Although the market offers an authentic and impressive cultural experience, it can be a stressful event for goats. It is good to be aware of this before making the choice to attend this this tradition.
5. Stay a night in Nizwa for an authentic experience
Do you really want to experience the magic of Nizwa? Then stay a night in this historic city and enjoy the authentic atmosphere once the hustle and bustle of the day has subsided. There are plenty of atmospheric accommodations, ranging from traditional guesthouses to more luxurious hotels. Staying overnight gives you the chance to wander the streets at leisure and discover Nizwa's quiet charm. The next morning you can quietly enjoy a cup of Omani coffee, fresh dates and a leisurely stroll through the souks. Or, of course, you can get up early to watch the hustle and bustle of the goat market. Either way, a stay in Nizwa gives you a unique insight into the daily life of this special city.
Accommodations I recommend in Nizwa are Antique Inn, Nizwa Heritage Inn and Al Diyar Hotel.
Antique Inn
The charming guesthouse Antique Inn, housed in a beautifully restored traditional house, is just steps from the Nizwa Fort. Antique Inn offers an authentic Omani atmosphere, with beautifully decorated rooms that reflect the local culture. The highlight is the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains.
Al Diyar Hotel
The Al Diyar Hotel is in a central location in Nizwa and offers an excellent base for exploring the city. Al Diyar has spacious rooms, a lovely outdoor pool and offers a traditional breakfast. The hotel combines modern facilities with Omani hospitality, making you feel right at home.
Nizwa Heritage Inn
For a unique experience, stay in Nizwa Heritage Inn, a traditional Omani guesthouse in the middle of Nizwa's old town. Housed in a beautifully restored building, it gives you the feeling of stepping back in time. The rooms are tastefully decorated and breathe the local culture. From the roof terrace you have a great view of the Nizwa Fort and the souk.
6. Go to Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle a little further away
About 40 kilometers west of Nizwa lies the city of Bahla. Amidst the many date palms you will find the imposing Bahla Fort, the largest in all of Oman. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987 and is one of the most important historical monuments of the sultanate. Made of clay and stone, it is less authentic compared to the Nizwa Fort. Nevertheless, it is still impressive to visit!
The nearby Jabrin Castle is the castle where the sultan once lived. The castle is a true showpiece. Wander the 5 floors and through the 55 rooms and marvel at the many details.
