You know them, those unique travel experiences that stay with you forever. One of these, for me, was undoubtedly staying overnight in Oman's Wahiba Sands desert. The endless expanse and serene silence ... the desert possesses an undeniable magic. But sleeping under the clear starry sky, among the imposing sand dunes, is of course even more special. Wahiba Sands, one of the most beautiful deserts in the world, is guaranteed to offer you a thousand-and-one-night fairy tale. Would you like to tour Oman? Then add the Wahiba Sands desert to your itinerary. These are all my tips!

The Wahiba Sands desert

Did you know that Oman for as much as 70% consists of desert? Not surprisingly, desert landscapes are among the country's biggest attractions. The Wahiba Sands desert is located in northeastern Oman and is also called Sharqiya Sands, in reference to the province of the same name As Sharqiya. For centuries, this desert was home to Bedouins and nomads. But today, the Wahiba Sands desert is primarily the place for the ultimate desert experience in the Middle East.

The Wahiba Sands desert is over 180 kilometers long. The landscape is characterized by a hue of red and yellow sand dunes. Some of these sand dunes are as high as 200 meters! Are you a daredevil? Then you will definitely want to tear through the dunes here with a 4×4. But not only that, because there are several more good reasons to visit Wahiba Sands!

1. Stay overnight with a Bedouin tribe in one of the desert camps

The Wahiba Sands desert is largely deserted, but in some places you can still find traditional Bedouin tribes. During your adventure in the desert, you may also randomly encounter Bedouin women dressed in authentic clothing. They also often sell handmade artwork in the villages. You would think that the Bedouin tribes live very old-fashioned lives, but this is not necessarily the case. Bedouin women are generally more "free" than the women in Oman's larger cities. For example, the women here often do drive cars.

Would you like to learn about Bedouin culture during your tour? Then you should spend the night in one of the desert camps. At Arabian Oryx Camp experience what it is like to live as a Bedouin. The tents at Arabian Oryx are Bedouin-style (but with air conditioning, which is nice when temperatures rise above 40 degrees). In the evening, you eat a traditional Arabian meal here by the campfire. Also at Desert Nights Resort you can sleep in a luxury Bedouin tent. Book your accommodation well in advance, as the finest desert camps fill up quickly.

Are you touring Oman by rental car? Then it's good to know that some desert camps are located on the edge of the desert and can be reached with a normal car over a paved road. Other camps are deeper in the desert and can only be reached with a 4×4. Going into the desert with your own 4×4? Then make sure you have your tire pressure lowered at one of the tire shops in Al Wasil and that you leave with a full tank.

2. Tear through the desert landscape of Wahiba Sands in a 4×4

One activity that cannot be missed when visiting the Wahiba Sands desert is a 4×4 tour through the desert landscape. Almost at all camps you can ask about this tour. An experienced driver will tear through the high dunes, also known as dune bashing. The local 4×4 drivers know the desert landscape like no other and take this 'sport' very seriously! In other words, they love to show you their skills. It's like a roller coaster, but with even more adrenaline! I found this really an unforgettable experience and would recommend it to anyone who is in Oman.

It is not smart to do this with your own rental car, even if you have a 4×4 rental car. Driving in the desert is a profession and you probably have little to no experience with this. In addition, you are not always insured if something happens. You can sandboard (a kind of snowboarding, but on sand) and that too is very adventurous!

3. Meet the friendly camels in the desert

As soon as you enter the desert they come to meet you, the friendly camels of Wahiba Sands. They are only too curious and will gladly come and have a look at you. As in many places in the world, you can take a camel ride. However, we would not do this. Of course, not all camels are treated badly, but to be on the safe side, we recommend viewing them in their natural habitat in the desert. That's special enough!

4. Take a hot air balloon ride over the Wahiba Sands desert

Want to do something very unique in the Wahiba Sands desert? Then take a hot air balloon ride! The thrill of rising into the air, combined with the insane views of the desert below, is both exhilarating and soothing. As you float over the serene rolling landscape, you truly imagine yourself in a dream.

Would you like to book the hot air balloon ride prior to your trip? Then this is a beautiful hot air balloon ride where you leave during sunrise. You can also ask about it on the spot at the desert camp where you are staying.

5. Climb to the top of a sand dune before sunrise

Even if you are not an early riser, the sunrise in the Wahiba Sands desert must be experienced at least once. It is a true spectacle. As the temperature palpably rises, you see the clouds on the horizon turn dark blue and orange as the sun slowly breaks through them.

Check the night before exactly what time the sun rises (with an iPhone, this can easily be done in the weather app) and make sure you are already standing on a high sand dune at that time. It takes some early getting out of bed, but it's well worth it!
