A'Dhahirah is one of the least visited regions of Oman, but that does not mean there is nothing to experience. On the contrary. For those who love adventure and the unknown, the A'Dhahirah region is a gem to explore. Expect vast deserts and impressive mountains, as well as beautiful cities with interesting sights.
The region of A'Dhahirah in Oman
An authentic destination like Oman hosts otherworldly landscapes with jagged mountain peaks, endless sand dune deserts, river gorges and a coastline with the clearest blue waters. Oman is a country with a rich culture, an interesting history and it offers crazy places to explore. The very well built roads make Oman a country that is easy to traverse and brings you to the most beautiful places like in the region of A'Dhahirah. A place where you can relax undisturbed, take in the local culture and make historical and archaeological discoveries.
The best sights of A'Dhahirah
If you love history and archeology, then A'Dhahirah is definitely the place to be. These are the most beautiful sights:
Bayt Al Marah Castle
At the foot of the Jebel Al Hawra Mountains, you will find the impressive 18-century castle of Bayt Al Marah in the remote village of Yanqul. Built entirely of mud (mud) bricks, the large castle dominates the skyline of this small picturesque village.
Ibri Fort
A few hours' drive from the capital Muscat lies the city of Ibri. In the middle of the vast desert you will not expect to encounter a city, but Oman is incredibly diverse and full of surprises. The city of Ibri may be surrounded by nothing but desert, but you will still find a truly vibrant city with beautiful buildings. The main attraction in Ibri is the Ibri Fort. The fort is over 400 years old and has been open to the public since 1995. The architectural style is typical of the Middle East and a picture to behold. The Ibri Fort consists of a jumble of buildings and towers, but the most interesting thing is that inside the fort you will find one of the oldest and largest mosques in Oman. And this one is still in use today! From the castle battlements you have a beautiful view of the city, mountains and desert. Next to the fortress you will find an old souk. Nice to take a look here before or after your visit to the fort.
Al Araqi and Al Aynayn
Along the road from Ibri to Al Rustaq you will find a beautiful twin settlement: Al Araqi and Al Aynayn. The two forts could not be more different. One fort has been completely renovated using modern restoration techniques, while the other fort is still old with attractive drawings and details. Both forts are open for visits.
Beehive tombs of Al Ayn and Bat
One of the absolute highlights of the A'Dhahirah region of Oman are a visit to the small villages of Bat and Al Ayn. Since 1988, they have been listed together on UNESCO's World Heritage List for their remarkable Bronze Age tombs and remains. Dating from 2,000-3,000 BC, this archaeological site is the most complete collection of settlement and necropolises in the world. The ruins resemble beehives and are therefore also called the beehive tombs of Al Ayn and Bat. Scattered around the site, you can find as many as more than 400 ruins, but almost all of them are partially or completely collapsed. With the imposing mountains in the background and the ruins of Oman's oldest civilizations, this is a special sight to visit.
