Spain has been one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations for years, and it’s easy to see why. With idyllic hidden coves, charming fishing villages, breathtaking landscapes and lively boulevards, the country offers something special for every type of traveller. The Spanish islands are no exception. But which island is the perfect match for your next holiday? Are you dreaming of a relaxing beach getaway on Mallorca, looking for year-round sunshine on the Canary Islands, or do you want to experience the vibrant and bohemian atmosphere of Ibiza? The lesser-known islands, such as Menorca and La Palma, are also absolutely worth discovering. In this article, we’ll take you on a journey through the most beautiful islands in Spain and help you discover which destination best suits your travel style. That way, choosing your next sunny escape becomes just a little bit easier.

Balearic Islands vs. Canary Islands: which island group is right for you?

Still not sure which Spanish island is the perfect match for your holiday? It can help to first understand the difference between Spain’s two main island groups. Below, we’ll share what makes the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands unique. But don’t forget to check out the best (last-minute) deals for a sunny holiday to the Spanish islands.

The Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are located in the Mediterranean Sea, east of mainland Spain. These islands offer a true Mediterranean atmosphere. Expect idyllic coves, charming terraces, picturesque villages and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The Balearic Islands are the perfect destinations for a spring, summer or early autumn getaway.

The best-known islands are Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera. Other smaller islands include Cabrera, Espalmador, Aire, and Dragonera.

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are located off the coast of Africa and are known for their pleasant climate. Even in winter, temperatures here often remain around 22°C. The landscapes are truly spectacular, with volcanic scenery, rugged coastlines, impressive mountains and vast nature reserves. Whether you love hiking, road trips or simply relaxing in the sun, the Canary Islands offer plenty of possibilities all year round.

The seven largest and most popular islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. In addition, there are six smaller islands.

1. Mallorca: much more than just beaches

Do you dream of a sun-drenched vacation with azure-blue coves, picturesque mountain villages, and golden sandy beaches? Then Mallorca is the perfect destination for your next getaway! This diverse Balearic island has all the ingredients for an unforgettable trip. You’ve probably seen pictures of the iconic sheltered coves tucked away between dramatic cliffs. Of course, beaches like Cala Llombards and Cala s’Almunia are absolute must-visits during your holiday in Mallorca, but make sure to also explore the island from the water with a boat trip along the rugged northern coastline.

Our favourite Mallorca tip: rent a car and drive through rolling hills covered with almond trees, discover charming mountain villages such as Valldemossa and Deià, and enjoy breathtaking views on your way to the northernmost point of the island, Cap de Formentor. End your day in the artistic village of Sóller, where the sun slowly sets behind the Tramuntana Mountains.

2. Ibiza: the bohemian gem of the Balearic Islands

Ibiza feels like a postcard brought to life. An island where every corner tells a story, from hidden coves and trendy beach clubs to charming whitewashed villages. Some of our favourite beaches are Cala Tarida, a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal-clear waters, and Cala Boix, a hidden gem where you’ll mostly find yourself relaxing among locals.

Ibiza is a wonderful destination for sun, sea and beaches, but there is so much more to discover. Wander through the winding, cobblestone streets of Dalt Vila, the historic heart of Ibiza Town, and uncover hidden boutiques and charming courtyards. Browse the famous hippie market at Las Dalias and enjoy a magical sunset overlooking the mysterious rock formation of Es Vedrà. But don’t miss Atlantis, one of the island’s most unique and enchanting places

And have a little more time? Take the ferry to Formentera. This small island is only a 30-minute boat ride from Ibiza and is known for its powder-white beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Get inspired by all our Ibiza travel tips. From the most beautiful beaches and best beach clubs to unique activities on this vibrant island.

3. Menorca: Mallorca's peaceful little sister

If you’re looking for tranquillity, nature and idyllic coves, you’ll instantly feel at home on Menorca. The island is much greener and less crowded than Mallorca, allowing you to enjoy hidden beaches, crystal-clear waters and charming harbour towns such as Ciutadella and Mahón. Menorca is an ideal destination for couples, families and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

4. Tenerife: for nature lovers and adventurers

Tenerife is an island full of contrasts, waiting to be discovered by lovers of breathtaking nature and adventure. The largest island in the Canary Islands offers a unique combination of rugged landscapes and sunny beaches. Here you’ll find not only beautiful sandy beaches, but also spectacular volcanic landscapes surrounding El Teide, Spain’s highest mountain.

The impressive cliffs at Los Gigantes and the fairytale-like, lush green Anaga Mountains are sure to take your breath away. Yet in many places, the island also feels wonderfully authentic, especially when you stroll through the historic streets of La Laguna and La Orotava. Tenerife is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves variety: exploring nature, eating fresh fish at a small seaside tavern, and relaxing on a stunning volcanic beach.

5. Lanzarote: impressive volcanic landscapes

Lanzarote feels almost otherworldly. The black lava fields, red volcanoes and unique coastal landscapes create a scenery you won’t find anywhere else in Europe.

A visit to Timanfaya National Park is an absolute must. You’ll also find the influence of artist César Manrique throughout the island, whose unique creations have helped shape Lanzarote’s distinctive character.

6. Gran Canaria: the 'Miniature Continent'

Gran Canaria may be one of Spain’s most famous islands, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of surprising and peaceful places waiting to be discovered. In fact, this ‘miniature continent’ is full of hidden gems. Within just an hour’s drive, the landscape can completely transform.

Wander through picturesque mountain villages such as Teror and Tejeda, where traditional wooden balconies and charming squares immediately make you feel welcome. But make sure to also visit the hidden gem of Barranco de las Vacas.

The famous golden sand dunes of Maspalomas are a must-see, but for a more relaxed atmosphere, head to the picturesque fishing village of Puerto de Mogán. With its colourful bougainvillea, bridges and canals, this village is often called the Venice of Gran Canaria. The island also has a rich history: stroll through the historic neighbourhood of La Vegueta in Las Palmas and admire the colonial architecture and old cathedrals. No matter how well-known Gran Canaria may be, this versatile island continues to surprise visitors with its incredible diversity.

7. La Palma: the green island for those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers

La Palma, also known as La Isla Bonita (“The Beautiful Island”), is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by travellers who love rugged, untouched nature. This Canary Island offers a completely different experience compared to the busier destinations and is perfect for those looking to experience the authentic side of Spain. Here, you won’t find mass tourism or huge resorts, but rather an island dominated by lush pine forests, impressive volcanic landscapes and breathtaking hiking trails.

With the enormous crater of Caldera de Taburiente National Park, the black volcanic beaches near Puerto Naos and the spectacular views from the island’s highest point, Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma offers natural beauty that will leave you speechless.

Did you know that La Palma is also one of the best places in the world for stargazing? Thanks to its protected night skies, you can look up at a magical blanket of millions of stars after sunset. During the day, wander through the picturesque cobblestone streets of the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma, admire the iconic wooden balconies decorated with flowers and end your day at a cosy local restaurant enjoying papas arrugadas with fresh mojo sauce.

Prefer exploring mainland Spain?

Although the Spanish islands are perfect for sunshine, beaches and relaxation, mainland Spain has surprised us time and time again. Travel through authentic Central Spain, where impressive castles, historic cities and hidden gems await around every corner. Discover the diverse Murcia region, where nature, beaches and charming villages come together. Or let yourself be inspired by Empordà, one of our favourite regions in Catalonia, with beautiful coves, picturesque villages and a wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere.
