Glühwein, Reibekuchen and Bratwurst are all three specialties you will always find at a Christmas market in Germany, but what makes the Christmas market in Aachen so special? That, among other things, is the local delicacy Printen that you can buy here almost everywhere. Printen is a taai taai-like cake and is in no way comparable to the gingerbread as we know it in the Netherlands. So you have to taste it! In addition, the Christmas market in Aachen is extremely cozy and intimate. Scattered around the city you will find several Christmas markets that you should definitely visit in the weeks before Christmas!

This year's Aachen Christmas Market will take place from Nov. 21 to Dec. 23, 2025!

The Christmas market in Aachen

The "Printermänner" is the icon of the Aachener WeihnachtsMarkt and you will find it on the square near the Aachener Dom and City Hall. This is also an ornately decorated square with a large Christmas market full of Christmas trees and stalls. The surrounding historic buildings make Aachen's Christmas market belong in the list of "most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. And we can certainly agree. This year (2025) is the 52nd edition of the Christmas market in Aachen and scattered throughout the city you will find no less than 100 stands. The best time to visit the Christmas market in Aachen? That is whendown the evening falls. The winter market is then enchantingly beautiful with its many lights.

Tip: Before visiting the Christmas market in Aachen, it is advisable to withdraw cash. In fact, at most stands you can only pay in cash.

Delights at the Aachen Christmas market

As soon as you enter Aachen's Christmas market, you immediately smell the scent of toasted almonds, waffles and pancakes all around you. Delicacies that will make your stomach growl. But promise us, before you indulge in these, try the local delicacy Aachener Printen. You can buy them at the Nobis stand or in the Nobis store. They have been made in Aachen since 1820, and you can buy them in a variety of shapes and flavors. There is even Printen liqueur and Printen mustard!

Hexenhof

One of the places we found to be very cozy is the Hexenhof on Münsterplatz. Also the place to score a nice mulled wine in one of the cute Christmas mugs. You pay a small deposit for the mugs. So you can choose to take the nice mug home or return it at one of the stands.

Oecher Glühwein

The oldest mulled wine stand at the Aachen Christmas market is the so-called stand Oecher. For 45 years mulled wine from this local winemaker has been offered here, and it has been voted Germany's best mulled wine several times. The organic mulled wine is made from 15-year-old vines. Nice tip: There is also non-alcoholic mulled wine or children's punch.

Accessibility to the Christmas market in Aachen

Aachen's Christmas market is crowded every year, but it can be especially busy on weekends. This is partly because Aachen is close to the border triangle of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Visitors to Aachen's Christmas market are therefore international and a visit is best planned well in advance.

If you travel from the south of Limburg to Aachen, then we can well imagine that you take the train. Easy and fast and you can also enjoy the delicious mulled wine. If you come from further away you will undoubtedly take the car. In our experience, Aachen is easy to reach by car and there are plenty of parking garages where you can find a spot.

A weekend in Aachen during the Christmas season

Why drive back and forth in one day to visit Aachen's Christmas market when you can also make a nice weekend of it? Because that is exactly what we did. We stayed in the fairly new boutique hotel Motel One Aachen. This hotel is very centrally located in the center of Aachen and also within walking distance of the Christmas market (5 minutes walk). The standard rooms are small but otherwise fully equipped. Are you looking for a slightly more luxurious stay? Then we can definitely INNSiDE by Melia Aachen recommend.
