This year, Düsseldorf’s Christmas Markets will take place from 20 November to 30 December 2025, offering plenty of festive fun for visitors of all ages!

Düsseldorf's Christmas Markets

During the Christmas season, Düsseldorf transforms into a crazy winter paradise. The entire city breathes Christmas: twinkling lights on every street, scents of mulled wine and cinnamon wafting towards you everywhere, and an atmosphere that immediately feels like stepping into a cozy Christmas movie. You literally walk from Christmas market to Christmas market here, without even realizing that you are crossing the center.

Germany is known for its atmospheric Christmas markets, and in Düsseldorf you will find many of them. This year, there are seven Christmas markets in the city center, and beyond that there are even more to discover, such as at the magnificent Castle Benrath. You can scour them all, but picking a few favorites in the Altstadt and surrounding area is just as much fun!

1. Altstadt Market

At the heart of Düsseldorf's old town, you'll find the Altstadt Christmas market. This Christmas market is characterized by the cozy huts and stalls that resemble the old burgher houses of the city. A cheerful and busy Christmas market in the midst of the Flinger Straße, ideal for combining this Christmas market while Christmas shopping. The highlight of this Christmas market is the traditional mulled wine pyramid opposite Carsch-Haus, a popular spot among locals and tourists.

2. Handwerker Market

The Handwerker Markt is located near Düsseldorf’s city hall, and the name says it all: this market is all about handmade Christmas goods. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique gifts for the holidays. The market is easy to spot thanks to the charming Renaissance-style huts and kiosks, and its centerpiece is the impressive hand-carved nativity scene, a true highlight of the market.

Don't forget to walk on to the Ferris wheel on Burgplatz, where you'll find many more stalls full of goodies and fun. And while you're there: take a spin on the Ferris wheel for a great view of the city!

3. Roncalli's Weihnachtspromenade

From the Handwerker Markt, it’s just a short walk to Roncalli's Weihnachtspromenade, a true surprise of Düsseldorf for us. This magical Christmas market stretches along the Rhine promenade, between Burgplatz and Alter Hafen, and is simply stunning. As you stroll along the waterfront, you’ll follow a romantic path lined with historic food trucks, nostalgic sales wagons, and glittering glass houses inspired by Art Nouveau orangeries. This is the kind of market where you just want to linger. For a drink, a tasty snack, and then maybe another! The stalls themselves are beautifully decorated, offering as much to feast your eyes on as to taste.

You’ll find classic German treats like bratwurst, reibekuchen, and mulled wine, alongside international delights such as Italian cannoli, parmesan pasta, and freshly grilled salmon. Beyond the food, explore stylish boutiques and glass houses brimming with Christmas decorations, jewelry, and handmade treasures. Feeling fancy? Stop by one of the two indoor pop-up restaurants, where you can enjoy a chic winter dining experience with a cozy, festive atmosphere.

4. Schadow Market

The Schadow Markt is a great stop if you want to combine Christmas shopping with a festive market visit. Located near the main shopping streets and surrounded by around 150 stores, finding the perfect gift is a breeze. Several department stores nearby offer a wide and diverse selection, making it ideal for last-minute Christmas shopping, which is exactly what we did!

5. Kö-Bogen Market

The Kö-Bogen Markt is a cozy Christmas market next to the luxury department store Breuninger, with views over the Hofgarten Park. What really makes this market special, however, is its unique location. Nestled between the theater, the iconic Dreischeibenhaus, and the modern Kö-Bogen II, it radiates a stylish, urban winter vibe. Since 2021, the market has been held on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, an area that has been completely transformed in recent years and now stands out as one of the city’s most modern and vibrant spots.

During the Christmas season, this square comes alive as a festive gathering spot for young and old alike. A small stage hosts performances by the Punch and Judy theatre, live Christmas concerts, and activities organized by local charities. And of course, the market is also famous for its sing-along Christmas music, making it impossible not to get into the holiday spirit.

6. Märchen Markt

During the Christmas season, the large square is transformed into a magical winter village. This is the Christmas market where German fairy tales come to life. For example, at the Kinderturm, stories are read aloud for visitors. The wooden silhouettes on the market huts are specially crafted by an artist. The market is illuminated by 15,000 LED lights, giving it a warm and enchanting glow.

The Märchen-Markt is located between Schadowstraße and Königsallee. Tip: Don’t miss Santa Claus, who visits the market every Friday!

7. The Winter Village (Königsallee).

Along the chic Königsallee you'll find The Winter Village: an elegant Christmas market where modern design and traditional Christmas atmosphere come together. Stretching between Corneliusplatz and the Girardetbrücke, the ‘Kö’ transforms into a stunning winter village with white glass pavilions, cozy wooden huts, and twinkling lights. It’s one of those places where you naturally slow down and take it all in, simply because everything is so beautifully decorated.

The Winter Village is brought to life by the Königsallee interest group (IG Kö) and is known for its modern pop-up boutiques featuring surprising brands, designers, and creative makers. Here, you can discover unique gifts and lifestyle items that are truly one-of-a-kind. Perfect for finding something special that you won’t easily see anywhere else.

You’ll also find plenty of tasty treats and drinks, with regional classics given a fun, modern twist. It’s the perfect Christmas market to combine with shopping on the Kö. With luxury stores, beautifully decorated stalls, and that magical winter vibe, The Winter Village feels like a mini Christmas paradise right in the heart of the city.

Kö on Ice (ice skating rink on the Königsallee)

Still have some energy left after exploring all the Christmas markets? Then head over to the Kö on Ice skating rink. Here, it’s not just about stalls and mulled wine, you can also enjoy ice skating, curling, and cozy winter fun. The rink transforms the chic ‘Kö’ into a genuine winter wonderland. Glide across real ice or try your hand at curling on a durable synthetic rink, just as fun and surprisingly authentic!

After skating, warm up in the cozy Füchschen-Alm, a wooden chalet spread over two floors. Upstairs you dine in a cozy restaurant setting with hearty winter dishes, while downstairs the atmosphere is more lively with bratwurst, hot soups and mulled wine.

Christmas market outside the city: Benrath Castle

Just outside the city center, you’ll find the Christmas market at Schloss Benrath, one of the coziest and most atmospheric markets in Düsseldorf. What makes it truly special is the local vibe. You’ll mostly meet residents here, far from the usual tourist crowds. The palace itself provides a stunning, romantic backdrop, while the forecourt is transformed into a winter wonderland with warm lights, cozy wooden huts, and soft Christmas music.

The stalls are filled with handmade gifts and delicious seasonal treats, perfect for finding inspiration for unique Christmas presents. On top of that, special tours and concerts allow you to explore the inside of the palace and enjoy the winter scene from a whole new perspective.

Parking in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf has plenty of parking garages, and using one comes with several advantages over street parking. You don’t need to decide in advance how long you’ll stay, and you avoid the risk of a parking fine. The rates are generally similar to street parking. The following three garages are conveniently located near the Christmas markets:

  • Altstadt-Rheinufer: This parking garage is located on the Rhine River and is open 24 hours a day. The Christmas market at Marktplatz is just a 300-meter walk away.

  • Carsch-Haus: A large and popular parking garage in the city center, also open 24 hours a day.

  • Kunsthalle and Kunstsammlung NRW: These two parking garages are located in the northern part of the city and offer a total of 475 parking spaces. Kunsthalle is open 24 hours a day, while Kunstsammlung NRW is closed at night.

Tip: During the Christmas period, the city center can be very busy, so also consider Park & Ride (P+R) options. From parking lots at Südpark or Düsseldorf Airport, among others, you can easily travel to the city center by public transport. That will save you time, stress and parking costs.
