Zagreb won't be the first destination you think of for a winter trip. But did you know that there are all kinds of fun things to do in Zagreb? Croatia's capital is an incredibly atmospheric destination in winter because of its interesting sights, beautifully lit streets and cozy Christmas markets. Plus, you can get into the Christmas spirit early. Fancy a winter city break in Europe? Then book your tickets quickly and find out what you can experience in Zagreb from the tips below!

1. Visit the various Christmas markets in Zagreb

One of the best reasons to book a winter trip to Croatia is because of the Christmas markets in Zagreb. From late November until the first week in January, the city is completely in the Christmas spirit. The annual event is known as Advent Zagreb and takes place in several places scattered throughout the city. You will find a number of cozy Christmas markets in the city, a large ice rink for ice skating and even a special Christmas tunnel. Everywhere you walk, the streets are gracefully lit and you will feast your eyes. Zagreb's Christmas market hasn't been voted Europe's most beautiful Christmas destination 3 (!) times for nothing. These are our favorite spots:

  • Jelačić Square - on Zagreb's main square you will find the city's largest Christmas tree every year, a place you must have been. Of course, you will also find an atmospheric Christmas market where there is often live music in the evening;

  • Zrinjevac Park - it is one of the most beautiful parks in the city and the Christmas market here is known for selling locally handmade products. And in addition, it is the place to taste "fritule," which are a kind of small oil balls;

  • King Tomislav Square - fancy a round of ice skating? Then King Tomislav Square is the place to be. The skating rink is surrounded by some nice Christmas stalls;

  • Grič tunnel - one of the most talked-about spots during the Christmas period in Zagreb. Experience for yourself why!

2. Stroll the Dolac market

If there is one place in Zagreb where you can catch a glimpse of everyday local life, it is at the Dolac Market, which can be recognized by its red umbrellas. Every day the market opens at 6:30 a.m. and you can go there to buy fresh fish, vegetables, fruits and many more products. For Zagreb residents, visiting the market is not only practical, it is also a fun outing to meet each other. Therefore, you can probably imagine that the market is crowded every day.

3. Taste the atmosphere of Tkalčićeva Street.

Ask any local in town where to be at night and they will answer: Tkalčićeva Street. It is the place in the city where it all happens. You will find many terraces, restaurants and bars where you can settle down both during the day and in the evening for a bite to eat and a drink. And as you can see from the picture, it is busy and cozy here even in winter. You can find Tkalčićeva Street, with its colorful buildings, in Donji Grad (Upper Town).

4. Admire St. Mark's Church

Earlier we mentioned the sights in Donji Grad (Upper Town), but you also have Gornji Grad (Lower Town). Both areas together form the heart of the city. Gornji Grad is the historic center with some of the most famous sights. But one of Zagreb's most iconic sights, St. Mark's Church, can be found right in Donji Grad. The most modern part of the city.

Because of its special appearance, St. Mark's Church is a highlight not to be missed during a city break to Zagreb. The white building and its colorful roofing attract everyone's attention. The colored tiles together form the coat of arms of Croatia and the emblem of the city of Zagreb. By the way, the church is located at an important point in Donji Grad, namely in the midst of all the political buildings.

5. Visit one of the fun museums

In winter, it can be quite cold and wet in Zagreb. On such days, consider visiting one (or more) of Zagreb's fun museums. In fact, the city is known for its extraordinary museums. A good example is the Museum of Broken Relationships. In this museum you will find items related to heartbreak and broken relationships. You can even send your own items! Other interesting museums in Zagreb are the Museum of Hangovers and the Museum of Illusions. This is a change from visiting a "standard" art museum.

6. Take a ride in the world's shortest cable car

A crowded attraction in Zagreb is the lLica train, aka the world's shortest cable car. The cable car connects Donji Grad with Gornji Grad via a 66-meter-long, or short, track. A ride on the train takes about 55 seconds and costs less than one euro per person. Not very spectacular, but a fun and moreover nostalgic activity to do!

7. Take a cooking workshop to make štrukli

One of the best ways to get to know a city inside and out is to get to know the local cuisine, among other things. And that local cuisine includes the specialty štrukli. A dough dish whose contents can be both sweet and savory. This is typical of Zagreb and the Zagorje region. You can order štrukli in almost any restaurant, as starter, main and dessert. But what could be more fun than learning to make your own štrukli? It's harder than it looks, but when you take a workshop at Villa Zelenjak Then you will learn all the tricks of the trade!

8. Taste local wines from the Zagorje region

The Zagorje region is one of the least known regions in Croatia, but is definitely worth exploring. This is because you will find beautiful hilly landscapes where there are also a huge number of vineyards. Because of the special minerals in the soil and because of the also fertile soil, grape varieties like Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir can grow well here. So tasting local wines from the Zagorje region is definitely fun to do.

Tip: You can combine a wine tasting with a cooking workshop at Villa Zelenjak!

9. Visit the medieval castle Veliki Tabor

In addition to beautiful landscapes, Zarogje is also home to many historic buildings, such as the medieval castle Veliki Tabor. The castle dates back to the 12th century and is known throughout Croatia for its rich history and impressive architecture. You can visit the castle, for which you pay a few euros entrance fee, and take a look at the various rooms.

From Zagreb it is about a 2-hour drive to Opatija. Here, immerse yourself in fine winter atmospheres, visit the insane Christmas market and take a walk to the fishing village of Volosko.
