Practical Tips for a Trip to Zagoria
Curious about the most beautiful hiking trails, the best time to visit, and the best way to explore the historic Zagorohoria? We answer the most frequently asked questions about Zagoria.
What are the most beautiful mountain villages to visit?
With 46 picturesque villages, there’s plenty to explore. Papingo (divided into Megalo and Mikro Papingo) is the most popular, thanks to its spectacular location beneath the towering rock formations of the ‘Towers of Astraka.’ Monodendri offers the best access to the Vikos Gorge and the impressive Agia Paraskevi Monastery. Looking for ultimate tranquility and an authentic atmosphere? Then visit the fairy-tale village of Dillofo, where cars aren’t allowed and time seems to have stood still. In our opinion, these are The Most Beautiful Mountain Villages of Zagoria.
What's the best way to experience the famous Vikos Gorge?
The Vikos Gorge is known as one of the deepest gorges in the world in relation to its width. Hiking enthusiasts can take the approximately 6-hour day hike that runs from Monodendri to the village of Vikos (or Papingo). Looking for breathtaking views without a strenuous hike? Then drive to the panoramic Oxya viewpoint or take a half-hour walk to the edge of the gorge from the Agia Paraskevi Monastery.
What are some great hidden gems in Zagoria?
Don't forget to take a dip (or a refreshing dip of the feet) in the Rogovo Pools (Papingo Rock Pools): natural limestone basins that have been carved out by water over the centuries. Be sure to visit the Voidomatis River, one of the cleanest and clearest rivers in Europe. In addition, the distinctive stone arch bridges, such as the three-arch Plakidas Bridge (Kokkoros) near Kipoi, are absolute must-sees in Zagoria. Want more tips? Is Zagoria a good destination for a fly-and-drive trip or a road trip?
Absolutely! A (rental) car is actually essential for exploring this region to the fullest. The roads in Zagoria are well-paved, but consist of challenging, winding mountain passes with countless hairpin turns. The region pairs perfectly with a visit to the floating monasteries of Meteora (about a 2-hour drive away) or a flight via the airports in Ioannina or Preveza.
