On vacation to Bali
Bali is one of the islands of Indonesia. Located east of the island of Java, it is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Indonesia. Bali attracts millions of visitors every year, not only because of its beautiful nature, but also because of its rich culture. Therefore, while traveling through Bali you can feel everywhere the ancient traditions, art and spiritual practices that are still an integral part of daily life. From the sacred ceremonies in Ubud to colorful markets in Denpasar, Bali offers a special cultural experience for those who look beyond the paradise beaches. Covering an area of about 561 square kilometers - comparable to the province of Friesland - Bali is easy to explore on a round trip of about 2-3 weeks.
How do I travel to Bali?
In most cases, when traveling to Bali, you will arrive at Denpasar airport. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Denpasar from the Netherlands. So you always have a transfer somewhere. There are several airlines offering flights from Amsterdam to Denpasar, such as KLM, Singapore Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Emirates. Bali is more than 12,000 kilometers away from the Netherlands. So a trip to Bali easily takes 16 hours. A long travel time, but well worth it!
Looking for the best deals on airline tickets? Then check out Skyscanner and compare the various flight options for Amsterdam - Denpasar. You can also choose to book a package tour, for example through TUI.
What are the most beautiful places in Bali?
Most Bali tours begin in the south, where the lively beach resorts of Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta are located. This part of the island offers an abundance of fine accommodations, impressive sights and lovely beaches. Not surprisingly, the south of Bali is so popular with travelers. Depending on the length of your stay, you can effortlessly combine some of the locations below to get the most out of your trip.
1. Canggu
Canggu may be the most popular place in Bali by 2025. Formerly a quiet coastal town, Canggu has quickly developed into the beating heart of the island, especially among backpackers and digital nomads. This can be seen in everything. The relaxed atmosphere of yesteryear is still palpable, but today the resort is dominated by hip coffee shops, stylish accommodations and trendy stores. We share all our travel tips for Canggu!
Lodging in Canggu
Canggu is bursting with fine accommodations. We stayed in Canggu at Canggu Dream Studios, a spacious and stylish accommodation in an ideal location: close to popular attractions, but just far enough from the crowds for a relaxing stay. If you are looking for something more exclusive, then Villa Ixora a good option. This private villa offers all the luxury you could wish for, with its own pool, beautiful garden and stylish furnishings.
2. Uluwatu
In addition to Canggu, the beach resort of Uluwatu is rapidly gaining popularity in Bali. Located on the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu offers breathtaking scenery with imposing cliffs and spectacular viewpoints. 'Bukit' means 'mountain,' and the peninsula's mountainous terrain creates a dramatic coastline beloved by travelers and photographers alike. Uluwatu is also known for the iconic Uluwatu Temple, one of Bali's main cultural attractions, situated on the edge of a steep cliff with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.
For surfers, Uluwatu is a true paradise, with some of the best surf spots on the island. You will also find some of Bali's most beautiful beaches here: from hidden, pristine coves to wide sandy beaches. Although Uluwatu is becoming increasingly touristy, you'll still find a very laid-back atmosphere here. It is also the place with many fun parties.
Staying overnight in Uluwatu
In Uluwatu, you have several accommodations in different price ranges. Padang-Padang Inn is a very nice stay if you want to stay close to Padang Padang Beach. For budget travelers, we recommend Home-Bience Hostel to. If you're looking for luxury, then Le Grande Bali a good option. You have a large pool here, as well as a spa and golf course.
3. Kuta
Kuta is one of the most famous beach resorts in southern Bali. It was formerly known as a party town, but this has changed greatly since the corona period. In the past, nightclubs and bars in Kuta were open late into the night, but not much of this nightlife in Kuta remains today.
It is not the first place we would recommend in Bali, but it is a popular place to learn to surf. The high waves and strong currents in Kuta are ideal for beginners to learn to surf. You will also find beautiful hotels, nice boutiques, department stores and a colorful (art) market in the city.
Staying overnight in Kuta
Kuta is conveniently located just about 10 kilometers from trendy Canggu, making it a convenient base. During our stay in Seminyak, we chose the gorgeous Amnaya Resorts, an absolute must. The hotel not only offers luxurious accommodations, but also the popular Sukun Restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious meals amidst a stylish ambiance. Other nice accommodations include Poppies Bali and Cara Cara Inn.
4. Seminyak
The Balinese coastal town of Seminyak is located just above Kuta in the far south of Bali. Seminyak has numerous fine hotels and resorts, delicious restaurants, spas, shopping malls and charming boutiques. Seminyak's beaches are among Bali's finest, including the lively Seminyak Beach, the locals' beloved Petitenget Beach and Double Six Beach.
There are also some beautiful sights in Seminyak, such as the Petitenget Temple. The Petitenget Temple is the central cultural monument of Seminyak. The ancient temple is a must-see of the Balinese resort.
Curious about the tastiest hotspots on Seminyak? We've collected them for you.
Staying overnight in Seminyak
In Seminyak, you will find a variety of accommodations to suit different budgets and preferences. Vila Lumbung offers a tropical retreat with traditional Balinese charm and a beautiful pool. We had an unparalleled vacation feeling here! Another must-see is Grandmas Plus Hotel.
5. Jimbaran
Jimbaran, located south of Kuta, began as a small fishing village and is now a popular destination with luxury resorts. It is not as crowded as Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. For nightlife, it is better to stay in one of the other places. In terms of restaurants, on the other hand, Jimbaran's offerings are great!
Jimbaran is best known for its seafood restaurants. On the beach you will find dozens of eateries where you can choose your fish dish from a large tank of live fish while enjoying the sand between your toes, the sea in the background and a starry sky. For fish lovers, a visit to the local fish market is a must. The fish market can be found on Jimbaran beach. You will find several stalls selling all kinds of freshly caught fish.
Staying overnight in Jimbaran
In Jimbaran, you will find both luxury and affordable accommodations. Anja Jimbaran is ideal for an affordable stay with a good location. For a luxury experience Belmond Jimbaran Puri a top choice, with insane villas and a beautiful beach. For a little something in between, we recommend Bay Beach Resort to, a fine hotel with direct access to the beach and a very nice pool.
6. Nusa Dua
The seaside resort of Nusa Dua is located on the peninsula of Bukit Badung. Located fourteen kilometers southeast of Kuta, Nusa Dua literally means "two islands. The destination Nusa Dua therefore owes its name to the two small islands, each with a temple, that lie off the coast of the town. You will find in Nusa Dua numerous luxurious resorts, a beautiful shopping mall and a snow-white beach with crystal clear water. The resort is ideal for snorkeling and diving trips. At low tide, you can find the most beautiful shells along the coastline.
As soon as you enter Nusa Dua, you leave behind the busy street vendors and chaotic roads, as well as the typical Balinese atmosphere of the rest of the island. We therefore particularly recommend Nusa Dua for a day trip from one of the other places. This way you will not miss the wonderful Balinese vacation feeling during your trip through Bali.
Staying overnight in Nusa Dua
Nusa Dua is actually completely set up for tourism. Therefore, for authentic Bali, this is not the place to be. However, are you looking for a beach vacation and want top luxury? Then Nusa Dua is a good choice. Beautiful exclusive accommodations in Nusa Dua are The Bale, Mercure Bali and Novotel Bali.
7. Ubud
Will You want to tour Bali? Then be sure to visit Ubud. North of the aforementioned resorts and in the foothills of Bali, you will find this artists' village. Ubud is about 30 to 50 km drive from the beach resorts in the south (depending on where you stay) and is one of the most popular destinations in Bali.
Near Ubud in Bali are several beautiful temples to visit, such as the Gunung Kawi temples and the Tirta Empul temple. You will also find vast rice fields all over and around Ubud, such as the famous Tegallalang rice fields.
Staying overnight in Ubud
Ubud is known for its insane accommodations. As such, there are several great places to stay in Ubud. From cozy hostels to luxurious hotels and spa resorts. Places we recommend are the boutique hotel Bisma Eight, the cozy homestay In Da Garden and the hidden pearl Hidden Bamboo.
Because we have visited Bali several times, we have been able to compare many different accommodations. Want to know more about hotels in Ubud? Read our personal accommodation reviews!
